Die Linguistic Landscape-Forschung lässt sich stark vereinfachend als " Text-im-öffentlichen-Raum "-Forschung fassen, d.h. als " study of writing on display in the public sphere " (Coulmas 2009: 14) begreifen. Unter dem Etikett " linguistic landscape " firmiert diese Forschungsrichtung seit der Arbeit von Landry/Bourhis (1997), das Forschungsinteresse geht allerdings wesentlich weiter zurück (vgl. Ziegler et al. i. Dr.). Es ist auch längst nicht mehr nur auf Texte und den geografischen Raum beschränkt, sondern nimmt diverse semiotische Praktiken (bis hin zu Tätowierungen) im öffentlichen und virtuellen Raum, auch unter dem Aspekt ihrer Produktions-und Rezeptionsbedingungen, in den Blick. Wie die internationale Forschung zeigt (vgl. den Forschungsüberblick von van Mensel/Vandenbroucke/Blackwood 2016), hat die Linguistic Landscape-Forschung bisher kaum historische Aspekte berücksichtigt, nicht zuletzt auch deshalb, weil die Datenfrage und Datenlage eine chronisch schwierige ist, wenn man Kriterien wie Relevanz, Repräsentativität und Aussagekraft der Daten zugrunde legt. Abgesehen von diesen eher methodischen Problemen stellt sich grundsätzlich die Frage, welcher zusätzliche Erkenntniswert für die Linguistic Landscape-Forschung von einem historisch empirischen Zugang ausgeht. In ihrem programmatischen Aufsatz mit dem Titel " Why diachronicity matters in the study of Linguistic Landscapes " stellen Pavlenko/Mullen (2015) heraus, dass eine historisch orientierte Linguistic Landscape-Forschung 1 vor allen Dingen dann Chancen bietet, wenn man nicht nur verstehen möchte, wie eine spezifische linguistic landscape zusammengesetzt ist, sondern auch, wie sich diese linguistic landscape und die für sie konstitutiven Zeichen historisch ausgebildet haben: " To understand perceptions of particular signs in terms of familiarity and normativity, the analysts need to establish how the sign in question resembles or differs from the other signs in the same category [Kursivierung im Original] and thus can rely on corpora that allow comparisons of signs across time and space. " (Pavlenko/Mullen 2015: 117) Um also Aussagen über Traditionen schriftgebundener kommunikativer Praktiken im öffentlichen Raum treffen und damit den Prozess der zunehmenden Betextung des öffentlichen Raums durch verschiedene gesellschaftliche Akteure nachzeichnen zu können, ist eine historische Perspektive auf " Sehflächen " 2 (Schmitz 2005: 2), wie sie etwa öffentliche Bekanntmachungen darstellen, unerlässlich. This book provides innovative research on the meaning and dynamics of multilingualism in the specific contexts of "micro-territories". Through the case studies of 10 micro-territories, the book offers a sociolinguistic analysis of two main types of smallness: islands such as Malta, Grenada, Sardinia, the Balearic islands and Taiwan, on the one hand, and small landlocked territories or countries such as Andorra, Aosta, Aran and Luxembourg, as well as the fragmented territory of Catalan-speaking Aragon, on the other hand. Taking into account the notion of micro-territory as a variable, language policies, language use and practices are analysed so as to offer new insights into the way multilingualism is conditioned by demographic and geographical factors. The book contains 5 chapters written in French, 5 in English, and an introduction in French.
