Library administration

This paper attempts to highlight the ever changing and ever increasing requirement of managerial skills due to digitization and technological changes and role of librarians in fulfilling clientele’s information requirements in an epoch where university libraries are highly influenced by the constant and rapid advancements in digitization and Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Paper highlights that while keeping pace with technological changes, university librarians have to play various roles and must acquire managerial skills to perform these roles in a better way to live up to the expectations of clientele community. Paper describes that continuous professional Development by acquiring and adapting managerial skills is the hallmark for effectiveness of library services for gratifying diverse information requirements of patrons. The present paper is simply a discourse which revolves around the administration and management of university Libraries. The study also reflects library managers should imbibe in administering these institutions more efficiently with effective managerial skills. Often, Library administration is kept at howl when it comes to academics for the fact university libraries are passively involved with teaching, extension and research thereby most of the time contribution of libraries disregarded among university academia. In universities, administration and academia are correlated and go side by side. Library professionals since being part of university academia should in no case be sidelined or let aside.

What makes books “rare” is problematic and endlessly debatable. But we all know one of the main causes of books becoming “scarce.” People throw them away. In library parlance this process is politely called “weeding,” “deaccessioning,” “discarding,” “deselecting,” “withdrawing,” and the like. But to call a spade a spade, it is no more than dumping the books. They are left on carts in library vestibules to be taken for free or sold in grocery bags for 10¢ each, and thus are dispatched to uncertain fates and probably eventual demise. Only if we are lucky are they traded to other repositories or advertised on listservs as “Free to a Good Home.”

SUMMARY. This paper describes innovative library services to dis-tance students negotiated through a geographically dispersed consor-tium, the Council of Prairie and Pacific University Libraries (COPPUL). The Distance Education Forum (DE Forum) is one of the most active member groups within COPPUL, and has had a number of successes in collaborative services over the years. This paper provides an overview of how the DE Forum works, its Web site, and its ways of working through small sub-teams coordinated via an annual meeting. We de-scribe a number of projects, looking both at what was successful and what didn’t work as well, and discuss what we learned.

The University Libraries’ Information Commons opened its doors on January 2, 2002. Its mission is to create an inviting out-of-classroom environment for learning, growth, and enrichment through student-focused research assistance, outreach to all students, and innovative instructional services. This case study details the history of the Information Commons at the University of Arizona, the planning strategy, available services and high-tech equipment, partnerships with other campus units, staffing, lessons learned, challenges, policies, and assessment mechanisms.

SUMMARY. This paper details how stand-alone instructional elements became the foundation for a new inquiry-based blended learning approach to information literacy on our campus. Based on the information search process research of Kuhlthau and designed to be inserted into blended learning classes, an information literacy workshop consisting of both on-line and face-to-face components was developed. Rather than simply train students on specific research tools, the premise for the workshop is to lay a broader foundation for students ’ inquiry based on discovery. ABSTRACT The mission of public libraries is to serve the unique needs of their local communities. Public library User's play a very vital role in the development of these libraries by suggesting or recommending additions to the collection. This study aims to evaluate the satisfaction of users with the quality and quantity of library collection. A self structured questionnaire based on open and close ended question was constructed. A purposive sample of one hundred users was selected. The data were qualitatively analyzed using a thematic approach. Positive opinion observed related to the library response towards the suggested titles. Almost half the population of respondents was satisfied with the availability of their suggested titles in library. Most of them were dissatisfied regarding the maintenance of equal collection of books and they are not encouraged by the library staff during the books suggestion process. It concludes that there is a need to evaluate the existing library collections.

This paper reports an ongoing research project aimed at developing an analytic rubric used with graduate literature reviews, focusing on the process of adapting and testing it as an instructional and assessment instrument. Early data are presented with explanations of instrument adaptation and our reflections on training and implementation. Emphasis is given to our techniques for transferring the project from one off-campus graduate program to a similar one, while continuing the faculty-librarian model of collaboration. We offer recommendations for modifications to the process and highlight strengths of the rubric.

The objective of this study was to identify trends in academic health sciences libraries (AHSLs) as they adapt to the shift from a print knowledgebase to an increasingly digital knowledgebase. This research was funded by the 2003 David A. Kronick Traveling Fellowship. The author spent a day and a half interviewing professional staff at each library. The questionnaire used was sent to the directors of each library in advance of the visit, and the directors picked the staff to be interviewed and set up the schedule. Seven significant trends were identified. These trends are part of the shift of AHSLs from being facility and print oriented with a primary focus on their role as repositories of a print-based knowledgebase to a new focus on their role as the center or "nexus" for the organization, access, and use of an increasingly digital-based knowledgebase.
