Dr. Ömer AKSOY’a teşekkürlerimle.
ABSTRACT
In our study titled “Cults in Ardahan/Damal/Burmadere Village”, we will examine the cults that we have been able to identify in the region and whose origins are based on the ancient Turkish faith. In general, the Ardahan/Damal Burmadere Turkmens, who are from the Bozus Turkmen tribe, have Alevi-Bektashi beliefs. Due to the animist nature of the ancient Turkish faith, the influence of natural cults in the region is quite strong. In addition to the cults of nature, the cult of water and the cult of Hızır are as influential as the cults of nature and are of a very high nature in terms of religious functionality. The places where we have identified some nature cults by the people of the region are called “Ziyaret” (or “Ziyarat” in the local language); In religious discourses such as bloody/bloodless sacrifice, curse-prayer (applause-mayhem), and rituals, the place of “Ziyaret” plays a great role. As well as prayers like -in the local language- “I call upon the Zirayats, may Allah help you with your work.” are common; there are also curses such as “I call upon the Ziyarats, may you come across the sword of Ali (Hazrat Ali).” Places such as mountains, gutters, etc. are seen as places called ”Zirayat”. The cult of Hızır is also one of the subjects of prayers. Discourses like “Let Boz Atlı Hızır be your companion.” or “Let Hızır be your helper.” or “Hızır will not catch up until man suffocates.” show the influence of the cult of Hızır. In the Alevi-Bektashi faith, the quarry system, which is the institution of the Dedelik office, is seen in the same way in the village we examined as it is seen in other Alevi-Bektashi villages. The people of Burmadere are connected to the Sultan Gözükızıl quarry. When we examine the cult of the quarry, we see elements such as the clergy in the old Turkish faith passed from father to son and that in order to be a cleric, it must be connected to a lineage. In the Alevi-Bektashi society, the source of the sanctity in the quarry system -indirectly in the region we have examined in our article- is the Ahl al-Bayt and the 12 Imams. The aim of our study is to examine the cults that can be identified and to explain them. With my thanks to my thesis advisor and esteemed Dear Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ömer Aksoy.
