Kloster Fulda

Ausgehend von der Ähnlichkeit des Klosters Corvey mit einem römischen Kastell, wird zunächst die Frage nach den antiken Bezügen karolingischer Klosterplanung nachgegangen. Es zeigt sich jedoch, dass die klassischen Baukonzepte mit biblischen Quellen kombiniert wurden, etwa der Vision des Hesekiel. Die Beobachtungen am Kloster Corvey weisen auch einen Weg zur neuen Interpretation der Klöster Frauenchiemsee, Lorsch und Fulda.

Why did Einhard - Charlemagne's famous biographer - decide to build two churches in the Main river valley during the first half of the 9th century? And why did he decide to change his first resolution to shelter the relics of the two Roman saints Peter and Marcellinus in the church in Steinbach and moved them to another new church located in Obermulinheim (after renamed Seligenstadt - i.e. the city of the blessed)? This article, published in the miscellany volume in honour of Professeor Gain Pietro Brogiolo's 70th birthday, tries to give some new interpretation to the history of these two most celebrated buildings of Carolingian Germany.
