Prof. Hamid Dabashi’s book, focusing on the dynamics of change and transition within the Shi’ite historical context, presents a panoramic perspective discussing conflict, uprising and conciliation periods of this significant sect within the history of Islam. Using Freudian psychoanalysis theory, Dabashi evaluates Shi’ite positioning against the regime and authority along with its protest discourse as a result of martyrdom at Karbala of Hossein, a grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.

While discussing this process, the author not only analyzes the significance and fight of the historical figures but also modern ideologues and artists. At the end of his analysis on the 1979 Revolution, Dabashi summarizes entire historical process as; “It thrives and is triumphant when it is combative and wages an uphill battle; it loses
its moral authority and defiant voice the instant it succeeds and is in power. It is, paradoxically, only in power when it is not in power—when it in power, it lacks legitimacy, authority, audacity.”

Иранский шахиншах Мохаммед Реза Пехлеви сравнивал себя с основателем Персидской империи с царем Киром II Великим и мечтал восстановить былую славу своей страны. Шахиншахское Государство Иран должно было основываться на трех ключевых принципах: «Бог, Шах и Родина». Упоминание Шаха в этой троице вслед за Богом не было случайным. Монарх, как человек, который был благословлен Богом, должен был исполнять указания Всевышнего на земле. Таким образом, власть должна была быть объектом поклонения и уважения для простых смертных. В дополнение к теологическому обоснованию этого союза, Пехлеви также обращались к шедеврам персидской классики. «Книга царей» («Шахнаме») Фирдоуси в этом плане занимало особо важное место. В поэме, созданном в 11 веке, царь считается символом гордости и идентичности персов. Только с институтом Шаха связано великолепие страны, ее судьба и бессмертие. Девять веков спустя, опираясь на «Шахнаме», шах Мохаммед Реза Пехлеви высказал такое мнение: «Иностранец не может понять значение монархии для Ирана. آونگ میان دریغ و دلیل ،» بیخود « با نشاندن گذشته ساده به جای گذشته نقلی و تکیه بیشتر بر
این داو را هم در میان می نهد که قرمز پیش از هر چیز رنگ خروش است و پرخاش، و اینکه
خونریزی سرنوشت ناگزیر انقلاب نیست.

The 1979 Revolution in Iran stems from human nature. It is the nature of instant self-gratification. The spirit of instant self-gratification is careless and does not process information carefully about what human needs are and what dangers lurk in the shadow. The essence of human nature is focusing on the moment of human pleasure.

İran tarihinin önemli alanını oluşturan kadınlar, çalışmanın ana konusu halini almıştır.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) pursues missions both domestic and foreign, chief of which are to maintain the power of the Islamic Republic of Iran and to expand Iran's prestige throughout the world. This article explores the wide-ranging political and military capabilities of the IRGC, including its export of Iran's Islamic Revolution to neighboring countries; its antagonism toward Israel, Saudi Arabia, and the United States; its command of a multinational, multidivision Shia Liberation Army; and its financial support for numerous proxy terrorist groups that are active in the Greater Middle East region.

Eurocentric approaches to political Islam tend to deploy an internalist methodology that theoretically obscures the generative and constitutive role of international relations. This article addresses this problem through a critical application of Leon Trotsky's idea of ‘uneven and combined development’ to Ayatollah Khomeini's invention of the concept of ‘Islamic government’. It argues that this concept was international in its socio-political stimulus and intellectual content, and, crucially, reflected, influenced, and mobilised an emergent liminal sociality that combined Western and Islamic socio-cultural forms. This heterogeneous character of Iran's experience of modernity is, the article argues, theoretically inaccessible to Eurocentric approaches’ homogeneous and unilinear conceptions of history, which, as a result, generate exceptionalist modes of explanations.

در بخش نخست این مقاله به زمینه‌های بازآفرینی و نیز فرض‌های محتمل در بروز شکلی از بدکرداری سیاسی پرداخته شد که می‌توان آنرا ماکیاولیسم خمینی‌مآب نامید. این پاره به بازاندیشی برخی از مفاهیم در اندیشه سیاسی ماکیاولی می‌پردازد و نمونه‌های بدفهمی و مسخ آنرا برمی‌سنجد و در پایان به اهمیت آفرینش یا تعمیق گونه‌ای ایمان‌ورزی به آرمان "خیر جمعی" و نیز بایستگی پاسداشت از واپسین گنجینه ایمانی ایرانیان اشاره می‌کند.

A number of studies have examined the role of the economically marginalized classes in the 1979 Iranian Revolution and the events which transpired in its immediate aftermath. It has been suggested that the mass mobilization of these classes, often referred to collectively as the mostazafin (downtrodden) in the official literature of the Islamic Republic, was instrumental in the success of the revolution and the subsequent establishment of the Islamic Republic under the leadership of Ruhollah Khomeini. The present paper contrasts Shi'i liberation theology and Shi'i Islamism as two distinct pro-mostazafin discourses that emerged in mid-and late-twentieth century Iran, and which facilitated the participation of the lower-and under-classes in the revolutionary movement. It argues that while it was developed originally by Shi'i liberation theologians, Islamist forces were able to successfully appropriate the pro-mostazafin discourse and gain the support of the economically marginalized classes in the crucial final phase of the revolution, and in doing so create an important social base for their political power.

Die Begräbnisse von Nasser in Ägypten 1970 und von Khomeini in Iran 1989 gerieten zu Massenveranstaltungen historischen Ausmaßes, die Millionen in Kairo und Teheran mobilisierten und zu den größten Menschenansammlungen überhaupt zu zählen sind. Es ist nicht zuletzt der Wucht dieser Ereignisse und der jeweils aus ihnen entstandenen Bilder geschuldet, dass der Status der Verstorbenen als Nationalhelden nicht lediglich in ihren Begräbnissen bestätigt wurde, sondern postum aufrechterhalten, verfestigt oder gar noch gesteigert wurde – ein Prozess, der in beiden Fällen keinesfalls erwartbar war. Schließlich hatten sowohl Nasser als auch Khomeini in ihren letzten Lebensjahren im Angesicht zahlreicher Krisen erheblich an Zustimmung eingebüßt, sodass ihr politisches Charisma zumindest in Frage stand. Die Ereignisse jedoch, die sich rund um die Leichname der beiden Nationalhelden entwickelten, schienen wie in einer affektiven Eruption ein letztes Mal die Außeralltäglichkeit Nassers und Khomeinis zu bestätigen, sodass die Episoden der Beerdigungen jeweils den heroischen Status der Protagonisten über ihren Tod hinaus maßgeblich konstituierten. Zudem verdichtet sich in den Prozessen um die Beerdigungen der beiden Nationalhelden und Identifikationsfiguren eine Symbolik, die darauf hindeutet, dass mit dem Tod der jeweiligen Person die Wahrnehmung eines Epochenbruchs verbunden ist.

Iran and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) still had dubious relations, as a result of Russian expansionism since the nineteenth century, and this reality had not changed during the Cold War. However, the Islamic Revolution in Iran, under the leadership of R. Khomeini, was perceived as a turning point by Moscow because of its anti-imperialist character. After unsuccessful efforts, the two neighboring countries, which had been in conflict ideologically and strategically, found themselves in a dilemma: Despite all the disputes, they tried to establish new diplomatic, military and economic relations. The Iran- Iraq War, as a founding element, was the most striking development in the Iran-Soviet relations. On one side, the USSR had to support its ally, Iraq, during the War and on the other, it had to prevent other powers from influencing the young Islamic republic. In this way, the fragile relations between these two countries gradually improved after 1985, when Mr. Gorbachev unveiled the new Soviet thought.

این نوشته به مواجهه بنیانگذار جمهوری اسلامی ایران با هم‌لباسان‌ش می‌پردازد و در ادامه درنگی می‌کند بر چگونگی صف‌آرایی او در برابر علمای هم‌طرازی که با خودش یا افکارش سر ناسازگاری داشتند و نتیجه می‌گیرد که سیاست‌ورزیِ برآمده از سنت توانست عالمان سنتیِ سیاست‌گریز را به انقیاد رژیم انقلابی درآورد.

La revolución iraní que tuvo lugar en febrero de 1979 fue una sorpresa para Occidente. La estabilidad política y económica del país durante casi cuatro décadas, había convertido a Irán en un referente en Medio Oriente, lo cual le había convertido en el principal aliado estratégico de la Casa Blanca en la región. Sin embargo, el acelerado proceso de modernización puesto en marcha por el régimen del Sha no logró redistribuir la riqueza proveniente de la venta del petróleo entre los sectores marginales. Asimismo, las políticas autoritarias, la corrupción, así como las prácticas represivas, hicieron aumentar un descontento social que no fue tomado en cuenta. Entre finales del año 1977 y a lo largo de 1978, se sucedieron una serie de acontecimientos que precipitaron a gran velocidad el fin de la dinastía Pahleví en Irán. En este artículo se presentan y analizan los hechos que fueron ocurriendo de manera encadenada y que permitieron la instauración de la República Islámica en abril de 1979, tales como las relaciones con los Estados Unidos, la organización de la oposición, las reformas puestas en práctica, la posición de los sectores religiosos y, especialmente, el papel jugado por el ayatolá Jomeini.

La fuerte represión aplicada por la junta militar chilena a partir del golpe de Estado del 11 de septiembre de 1973 hizo reaccionar a la comunidad internacional. De manera inmediata, la mayor parte de las democracias occidentales y de los países de la órbita soviética optaron por condenar y aislar a la dictadura de Augusto Pinochet (1973–1990). Bajo este escenario, fue necesario encontrar nuevos aliados en regiones en las que hasta entonces Chile no había estado presente. El Sha Mohammad Reza Pahlaví se convirtió en un gran referente, especialmente por la naturaleza de su gobierno y también por la similitud del desarrollo político que se vivía en ese momento en Irán. Por esta razón, en 1974 Chile abrió una embajada en Teherán con el objetivo de intensi car las relaciones políticas y comerciales, y, además, con la esperanza de que Irán hiciera entender a Occidente que la experiencia chilena en la cruzada contra el comunismo y de modernización económica, era similar a la suya. Sin embargo, la revolución islámica de 1979 y la ruptura de las relaciones al año siguiente hicieron sucumbir de las pretensiones del dictador. Una vez que estalló la guerra Irán-Irak, Pinochet, al igual que otros mandatarios occidentales, decidió sacarle la máxima rentabilidad, para lo cual decidió suministrar armamento clandestinamente a ambos ejércitos.
En este artículo se presenta a grandes rasgos el desarrollo de las relaciones entre Chile e Irán, partiendo desde la apertura de la embajada de Chile en Teherán hasta mediados de la guerra Irán-Irak.

Ввод советских войск в Афганистан полностью изменило стратегический ландшафт Юго-Западной Азии.  Тем не менее, большинство исследований политики США в отношении Ирана в этот период, практически ничего не говорят о взаимосвязи этих событий в Иране и Афганистане. Ключевые лица, принимавшие решения как в США, так и в Советском Союзе, рассматривали ситуацию в Афганистане через иранскую призму.

В период с 1979 по 1989 год внешняя политика Исламской Республики Иран основывалась на базе идеологии аятоллы Хомейни – «Вилаят аль-факих», которая наделяло верховного лидера Ирана высшей властью принимать решения по всем политическим вопросам. Другим фундаментальным принципом этой идеологии была политика экспорта исламской революции.  Таким образом, первые 10 лет политика пост-монархического Ирана в отношении Афганистана были в значительной степени сформированы аятоллой Хомейни, а после его смерти в 1989 году – его преемником аятоллой Али Хаменеи.

This paper critically draws on Leon Trotsky's idea of  'uneven and combined development' (UCD) to develop a non-exceptionalist account of the Iranian revolution to which 'societal multiplicity', 'interactive coexistence' and 'combination' are central. The paper concludes with some critical reflections on the implications of UCD for historical materialism.

آیا این عنوان طنزآمیز و حاوی کنایه است؟ آری، درست همان‌گونه که تاریخ چهل سال اخیر ایران بیش‌تر به زهرخند می‌ماند تا واقعیتی ساده. در کتاب‌های درسی زمان ما «تصمیم کبری» اشاره به دخترکی داشت که دفترش را گم کرده بود و سپس به‌یاد می‌آورد که زیر درختی جاگذاشته اما بعد آنرا خیس و کثیف می‌یابد و سپس تصمیم می‌گیرد که فراموشکاری را کنار بگذارد. در این مقاله تصمیم کبری اشاره به اپوزیسیونی دارد که در یک قمار تاریخی تمام‌قد پشت یک آیت‌الله رادیکال ایستاد تا بتواند دشمن مشترک را یک‌بار برای همیشه از صحنه حذف کند.

نوشتن درباره واپسین سلسله پادشاهی در ایران به‌خودی خود کار چندان ساده‌ای نیست چه رسد به آنکه بخواهیم درباره امری داوری کنیم که به‌تعبیر روزمره «دو روی یک سکه» خوانده تواند شد. داوری درباره اصلاح‌گرانه یا محافظه‌کارانه بودن سیاست‌ها و رویه‌های اتخاذ شده در دوران پهلوی به‌ویژه دوره دوم و طولانی‌تر محمدرضا شاه پیش از هر چیز به روشن کردن دو مفهوم طرح‌شده بازمی‌گردد. در کشوری که چهل و اندی سال پیش یک انقلاب زیانبار را (با همکاری نانوشته یک اقلیت سرسخت و یک اکثریت خاموش) تجربه کرده و بیش از بیست سال تداوم همان زیانباری را تحت عنوان اصلاح تاب آورده، توضیح مفهوم «اصلاح» از زمره ناممکن‌های آسان (سهل و ممتنع) خواهد بود. نیز زان‌سو که سیستم بهینه سلطنت با یک خیزش بنیادگرایانه فروپاشید و بافتار این چهل و اندی سال یکسره از پیامدهای همان فروپاشی است، اشاره به جمهوری اسلامی به‌عنوان آنچه مخالفان شاه «نتیجه عدم اصلاح سیستم» خوانده‌اند در مقام مقایسه و فهم موقعیت‌های تاریخی و امکان‌های این دو گریزناپذیر است. رفت و برگشت‌های نظری و تاریخی میان گذشته و حال در ترسیم آینده بهینه ایران نیز از همین‌روست

Humeyni gibi oldukça tartışmalı ve aşk-nefret ilişkisi içerisinde ele alınan tarihsel bir figüre ilişkin olarak, Farsça yayınlanan biyografilerin genellikle olumlu yönlerine odaklanan, İngilizce biyografilerin ise çoğunlukla eleştirel ve tak yanlı perspektife sahip çeşitliliği bir tarafa; Türkçe biyografilerde önemli bir kalite, yeterlilik ve perspektif sorunu göze çarpmaktadır. To understand why Iran insists on having advanced nuclear technology, we must understand the regime's world-view. That world view is marked by Islamic imperialism, paranoid conspiracy thinking focused on Jews, dehumanization of non-Muslims, and totalitarianism. ابوالاعلی مودودی (۱۹۷۹-۱۹۰۳) از نخستین احیاگران اسلامی به‌شمار می‌رود که ایدئولوژی فراگیری را از خلال «جماعت اسلامی» تدوین کرد؛ حزبی که آنرا در سال ۱۹۴۱ در لاهور بنیان نهاد. شاخه‌های این حزب و پیروان آن هنوز در پاکستان، هند، کشمیر و سریلانکا حضور دارند.

متغییرهای  فرهنگی و سیاسی جامعه ایران  در تناسب با متغییر  اجتماعی ی از پیش  تحول یافته،  می توانند متحول شوند. تحول  همزمان این سه دسته متغییر ها  به همراه خود، بهبود متغییر های اقتصادی جامعه ایران را نیز به دنبال خواهد داشت.به عبارتی جامعه ایرانی می تواند "هماهنگی وجودی" یافته و "تاخر فرهنگی" را هم از میان  بردارد.

"This solid analysis of Islamism is completed with a focus on its legal concepts. The present dissertation successfully combines the disciplines of jurisprudence with social science and political
philosophy. Suurland’s assumption is “to establish that Islamist ideologies are totalitarian in nature”. The core concept of Islamism is shari’a, a notion often translated as “Islamic law”.
Therefore it is correct to qualify the study of Islamism with a focus on shari’a as a legal inquiry. Nonetheless, Suurland crosses the narrow borders of discipline related boundaries to engage in a fresh perspective that allows a general assessment of shari’a-based Islamism. Given the high quality of the submitted study I already at the outset of this review recommend to the PhD-committee to accept the present dissertation, and grade it summa cum laude. This is undoubtedly a work of excellence and I hope it will be published in an abridged draft to make its findings accessible to the scholarly community."

"Die Dissertation (“thesis”) hat die Qualität einer Habilitationsschrift an einer deutschen Universität.
Mit der Dissertation („thesis“) wird ein Mangel der Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften in Europa und den USA gemildert. Der Gegenstand der Dissertation ist das Verhältnis zwischen Politik und Religion im so genannten Islamismus. Das Originelle der Dissertation besteht darin, die
Beziehung zwischen Politik und Religion am Beispiel des Totalitarismus untersucht zu haben. David Suurland hat das Ziel seiner Dissertation, nämlich zu begründen, dass der Totalitarismus der islamistischen Ideologie auf der Säkularisierung (Verweltlichung) bzw. Imanentisierung der Transzendenz beruht, sehr gründlich und präzise dargestellt.
In den Kapiteln von Part I (p. 63-265) hat er unabhängig vom Islamismus die theoretischen Grundlagen einer Phänomenologie des Islamismus entwickelt. Ohne die theoretische Qualität der Kapitel in Part I hätte er die konkreten Differenzierungen der Phänomenologie des Islamismus in
Part II – Mittel- und Schwerpunkt der Untersuchung – nicht so ausgezeichnet nachweisen können.

This chapter argues that one key legacy of the US effort to bring democracy to Iraq has been that many elements within Iraq’s Shia Arab political elite have viewed democracy through the lens of a cynical majoritarianism and manipulated it to catapult themselves to power. This has had a further legacy, enabling the democratically elected government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to utilise his incumbency to maintain the veneer of democracy while becoming increasingly dictatorial and authoritarian. Although Maliki has been widely criticised for deploying a host of authoritarian strategies to retain power – including blatant sectarianism, undermining key state institutions, the creation of a shadow state loyal to himself, and the concentration of military and political power in his own hands – this chapter focuses on his less well-known efforts to shatter the unity of his Shia Arab political opponents. It focuses on his first two terms in power and examines the ways in which he has been able to systematically fracture the Shia political elite to such an extent that once tenuously united factions now stand bitterly divided. The chapter concludes by reflecting on the reasoning behind such an approach and the prospects of Iraq’s democracy moving beyond the blatant power grab of the Maliki government.

محمدرضا نیکفر پاره‌ای از کوشش‌های فکری خود را در سالیان اخیر به تحلیل انقلاب بهمن معطوف کرد. تحلیل او در نهایت دفاعیه‌ای است از روح آزادی‌خواهانه انقلاب که گویی کالبد آن رخداد توان پذیرش این روح را نداشت و به‌همین‌خاطر بدن مزبور آنرا پس زد و روح موازی که همان روح‌الله بود جای آنرا گرفت و شد آنچه شد و نمی‌بایست می‌شد. این کوشش‌ها در بیش‌ترینه‌ی سویه‌هایش به فهم خود و همسنگران (بن سکولار انقلاب) و نیز فهم دیگری و هماوردان (بن دینی انقلاب) می‌پردازد و مگر در پاره‌ای فرازهای ناهمخوان با کل تحلیل، تا کنون ارزش آنرا ندیده است که به طیف مخالفان بنیاد انقلاب بهمن بپردازد.

Iran wields direct influence on the post-Ba'ath government. The Shi'a parties and their respective armed militias are divided over this role. The pro-Iran Hashd formations are intent on securing Iranian control and stage regular attacks on adversaries. Critics face being killed. Even the Prime Minister is not immune to assassination attempts.

Iraq is now deeply divided. The Tishreen movement like the Green Movement in Iran has been driven back by violence but continues to  press for reform.

The early October 2021 elections did not achieve what the pro-change movement aimed for - the same old faces continue to haggle for position. Corruption still thrives.

This book offers an intellectual history of one of the leading Shi’i thinkers and religious leaders of 20th-century Lebanon, Shaykh Muhammad Mahdi Shams al-Din. The author argues his role as the foremost figure of Shi’i intellectual life, a key associate of Musa al-Sadr, and president of the Supreme Shiite Council of Lebanon, having maintained the independence of this institution until his death from the domination of Shi‘i political parties. The core of the book consists of three interrelated main themes that constitute the major threads of Shams al-Din’s intellectual legacy: Islamic government involving a critique of Khomeini’s theory of wilayat al-faqih, the role of Islam within civil government, and the political integration of the Shi‘a in their respective countries.

With the great progress made in the study of Shiʿi Islam over the last few decades, the field is in a better position to devote careful attention to the specificities and nuances in the worldviews of individual Shiʿi thinkers. In this spirit, the present monograph analyzes the worldview of the fifth/eleventh century Fatimid Ismāʿili dāʿi and philosopher, Ḥamid al-Din al-Kirmānī, in comparison and conversation with the worldview of the Safavid Twelver Shiʿi (mystical philosopher) Sadr al-Din al-Shirazi (Mullā Ṣadrā).

Both Twelver Shiʿi and Ismaili Shiʿi Muslims revere a specific lineage of descendants of the Prophet Muhammad through his daughter Fātima al-Zahrā and his cousin ʿAli b. Abi Tālib as his divinely appointed successors and as infallible leaders possessing comprehensive spiritual authority, divinely inspired knowledge, and intercessory functions in which they mediate the spiritual relationship between human beings and God. For the Twelvers, the Imam of the current age, a lineal descendant of Musā b. Jaʿfar al-Sādeq, has been in occultation (ghayba) for some 1,200 years; for many Twelvers, this Hidden Imam is generally represented by the Twelver jurists and clerics. For the Ismailis, the Imam of the time is a living descendant of Ismāʿil b. Jaʿfar al-Sadeq, who is either present and directly accessible to his community (as Aga Khan IV for the Nizāri Ismāʿilis) or concealed and represented through the mediation of his authorized da‘is (for the Tayyibi Ismailis). This doctrine of the Imamate, which revolves around the issue of rightful spiritual and temporal leadership in Islam, presupposes certain models of epistemology, theology, cosmology, and anthropology that ground the spiritual status of the Imams. Meisami’s book focuses precisely on these background concepts underlying the doctrine of the Imamate as understood by al-Kirmānī and Mullā Ṣadrā within the Fatimid and Safavid contexts respectively.
