The two novels by Joyce Carol Oates analyzed in this paper, Black Water (1993) and Mudwoman (2012), were written in two different moments of the author's career. The first one is based on the infamous Chappaquiddick Incident (1969), where a woman drowned in a car driven by Senator Edward Kennedy; the second is the story of Meredith Neukirchen, a Professor and president of an Ivy League College, who was thrown in a river by her mother as a child. These novels share a relationship of intertextuality deriving from several elements such as the common setting (the water where the protagonist lose/risk losing their lives), the idea of storytelling and the attempt to silence this ability and an ideal dialogue between the two texts on the idea of death and responsibility. The paper analyzes these common features and the reasons that brought Oates to writing, twenty years after the first, what can be defined as the novel of survival: the one where the protagonist lives to tell her story. RESUMO: Os dois romances de Joyce Carol Oates analisados neste artigo, Black Water (1993) e Mudwoman (2012), foram escritos em dois momentos diferentes da carreira da autora. O primeiro é baseado no infame Incidente de Chappaquiddick (1969), onde uma mulher se afogou em um carro dirigido pelo senador Edward Kennedy; A segunda é a história de Meredith Neukirchen, professora e presidente de uma Ivy League College, que foi jogada em um rio por sua mãe quando criança. Estes romances compartilham uma relação de intertextualidade derivada de diversos elementos, como o cenário comum (a água onde o protagonista perde/corre o risco de perder suas vidas), a ideia de contar histórias e a tentativa de silenciar essa habilidade, e um diálogo ideal entre os dois textos sobre a ideia de morte e responsabilidade. O artigo analisa essas características comuns e as razões que levaram Oates à escrita, vinte anos após a primeira, do que pode ser definido como um romance de sobrevivência: aquele em que a protagonista vive para contar sua história. to show how the American author Joyce Carol
Oates used this story, setting it in the 1990s,
for her 1992 novel
Black Water.
Through the
character of Kelly Kelleher, the writer builds a
national and gender emblem using Kopechne
as a springboard. The final aim of the operation
is to highlight the contemporary condition of
women and to “bear witness” for those who
cannot speak for themselves anymore.

This is a very integral paper to human history. It is not only a history detailing the reason for the fall of the Republic (and thus the Empire), it is a complete history of Rome itself. Moreover, it represents Cicero's view of the evolution of consciousness, of which the history of Rome is an integral part, and has it's place in the historiography set out by Ken Wilbur and many more. Precious little has been written in academic scholarship about the US arms relationship with Iran. Much of the scholarly focus has focused on twin crises in Iranian history: the 1953 British and American sponsored coup and the preceding oil blockade, and the 1979 Islamic revolution that swept the Shah from power. Hence, the years in-between 1953 and 1979 are often treated only in passing. A major feature of this period was an ever escalating arms relationship between Iran and the US which progressively grew both qualitatively and quantitatively throughout the Cold War from a relatively minor aid relationship into a major arms credit partnership; within which Iran became the US’s largest arms export customer by 1971. This article focuses on the very early years of the relationship between 1950 and 1963 within which successive US Presidents viewed Iran as a relatively weak chess piece in a sensitive region, with military aid being one of the major levers with which to secure the stabilisation and pro-American disposition of Iran in the emerging Cold War context.

This paper advances a new paradigm in clinical ethics education that not only emphasizes development of individual clinicians' skills, but also focuses on the institutional context within which health care professionals work. This approach has been applied to the goal of improving the care provided to critically and terminally ill adults. The model has been adopted by about thirty hospitals and nursing homes; additional institutions will soon join the program, entitled Decisions Near the End of Life. Here, we describe the history and rationale for this approach, its goals, pedagogical assumptions, and design.

This essay unpacks the images and references from three of Robert Lowell’s sonnets from Notebook 1967-68; “Window-Ledge 2. Gramsci in Prison,” “For Robert Kennedy 1925-68,” and “Five Hour Political Rally.” In order to show the unified theme of the three sonnets I will re-weave the lines and the poems.  By this re-ordering, this essay will show Lowell’s ability to connect antiquity to 1968 America. He does this first through positioning himself as stuck indoors and in solitude ruminates on men of light such as the early 20th century Italian socialist Antonio Gramsci. Then, through Plutarch, Robert Kennedy’s life and death as a member of the ill-fated Kennedy clan, the impression of a rug from a political rally, he concludes, “I saw the world is the same as it has been” (Window-Ledge 2. Line 14). Lowell comments on the lives, ideologies, and actions of others in order to demonstrate his own philosophy of despair.

The importance of vocabulary learning has been underlined in the field of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) because non-English majors who require reading English texts in their fields of study have to ex-pand their English vocabulary knowledge much more efficiently than ordinary ESL/EFL learners. Since academic vocabulary instruction in Iranian universities is realized through the use of General English (GE) textbooks, the present study pursued a dual purpose of evaluating Iranian engineering undergradu-ates ’ knowledge of academic vocabulary, as well as conducting a comparative corpus analysis of the aca-demic vocabulary content of GE textbooks, electrical/electronic engineering Master’s Entrance Examina-tions, and authentic electrical and electronic engineering texts. The participants were 520 engineering stu-dents from ten universities. The corpora under study comprised a total of 1,180,000 running words.
