Journey

Read the works of Jules Verne (1828-1905) allows the reader to get in touch with a world model in scientific development and discovery, an ideal model designed by European evolutionists and technicist of the nineteenth century. Therefore, in this research, the question that going to guide our investigation on this huge literary production is: his works would be a utopian ideal model based on the exaltation of science and emerging technology or Verne would have questioned this model? We note that the French writer is best remembered by the conventional reading about his books, confirming the technological exaltation than the literary criticism that performs the scientific culture of the time, through its dystopian effects.

Joannes Leo Africanus, (c. 1494 – c. 1554?) (or al-Hasan ibn Muhammad al-Wazzan al-Fasi, Arabic:حسن ابن محمد الوزان الفاسي) was an Andalusian Amazigh Moorish diplomat and author who is best known for his book Descrittione dell’Africa (Description of Africa) describing the geography of North Africa.

In the year 24 BCE, Roman Emperor Caesar Augustus ordered the Prefect of Egypt the beginning of a military campaign to seize control of Arabia Felix rich and important trade routes is controlled. Ibn Baṭūṭah (Arabic: أبو عبد الله محمد بن عبد الله اللواتي الطنجي بن بطوطة‎, ʾAbū ʿAbd al-Lāh Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Lāh l-Lawātī ṭ-Ṭanǧī ibn Baṭūṭah), or simply Ibn Battuta (ابن بطوطة) (February 25, 1304 – 1368 or 1369), was a Moroccan explorer of Berber descent. He is known for his extensive travels, accounts of which were published in the Rihla (lit. "Journey"). Over a period of thirty years, Ibn Battuta visited most of the known Islamic world as well as many non-Muslim lands. His journeys included trips to North Africa, the Horn of Africa, West Africa and Eastern Europe in the West, and to the Middle East, South Asia, Central Asia, Southeast Asia and China. Ibn Battuta is considered to be among the great travellers of all time.

Abstract: Though an ancient practice, the exposure of infants has been little studied due to the scarcity of documentary sources. Even the Greeks had forgotten the juridical order to which it pertained at its beginnings, but they continued to give it a religious meaning, by virtue of customs, popular beliefs, or ancient religious traditions dating before the establishment of any law. It is the mythological tradition that conserves the memory of the exposition of certain newborn children. Notwithstanding their differences, the myths that contain the exposition of infants subjected to the trial of the chest follow the same schemas, which are constellated by the themes of legitimization, confirmation and the attestation of innocence or culpability through the discrimination between truth and falsehood. We will try to show that the trials undergone by the victims form the epic kernel of these legends, their ritual initiation and coming of age, even the passage from a world to another and the transition from one condition to another, qualitatively different.

Wounded Water / Agua herida (Bogotá 2004) es un libro de poesía bilingüe de la poeta colombiana contemporánea Anabel Torres (1948). Esta obra ofrece un encuentro poético con el trauma o “las pequeñas sacudidas personales” de las que consistía, en esencia, la poesía de Charles Baudelaire para Paul Valery. Torres escribe de su vida cotidiana como mujer, como poeta y como emigrante radicada en Europa durante las últimas dos décadas. Propongo que Wounded Water /Agua herida es poesía de supervivencia, similar a la que Gregory Orr define como “poesía lírica de transformación”. El campo semántico del agua en la poesía de Torres conceptualiza un amplio espectro de ciclos vitales.

Wounded Water / Agua herida (Bogotá 2004) is a bilingual book of poetry by contemporary Colombian poet Anabel Torres (1948). This book offers a poetic encounter with the trauma or “minute personal shocks» Paul Valery cites when referring to Baudelaire’s poetry. Torres writes of her everyday existence as a woman, as a poet, and as an emigrant living in Europe for the last two decades or more. I contend that Wounded Water/ Agua herida is poetry of survival, similar to what Gregory Orr defines as “transformational lyric poetry”. The semantic field of water in Torres’s poetry conceptualizes a broad spectrum from birth, death, and rebirth.

Esta pesquisa visa explorar como os games poderiam ser capazes de proporcionar àquele que os experimenta uma vivência com características significativas. Até que ponto qualidades como a contemplação, o acaso extático, a mudança de hábitos e o autoconhecimento, por meio do questionamento moral e ético, são também aspectos envolvidos no ato de jogar? E quais tipos de experiências esses aspectos são capazes de criar? Pretende-se analisar alguns dos elementos de sua linguagem que devem ser capazes de trazer algumas explicações sobre as razões que os fazem ter tanta penetração junto aos seus usuários, uma penetração que não pode ser compreendida pela simples constatação de que games são feitos exclusivamente para divertir. Para a investigação, foram selecionados três games, Journey (2012), Portal (2007) e The Walking Dead (2012), com a finalidade de refletir acerca das possibilidades de experiência que suas jornadas permitem. Neles, são investigados e discutidos seus aspectos de linguagem a partir da fenomenologia, estética e semiótica peirceana, no objetivo de encontrar uma predominância fenomenológica no interpretante imediato de cada um, ou seja, em seu potencial imanente de significar. Como resultado, fica constatada a existência de três cartografias semióticas das possibilidades de experiências dos games, inspiradas nas categorias universais peircianas: primeiridade, secundidade e terceiridade. Fundamentam esta pesquisa, principalmente, a Fenomenologia, a Estética e a Semiótica de Charles Sanders Peirce e as obras de Lucia Santaella, Priscila Arantes, Mirna Feitoza, Cleomar Rocha e Brian Upton.

This academic work aims at analyzing a three-stage hero's journey – departure, initiation, return – by the example of Virginia Woolf's novel's protagonist "Orlando". Methodology, which I use here is Joseph Campbell's theory of monomyth, which describes above-mentioned stages and their impact on the development of hero's psyche. While analyzing I will be using tools created by Carl Gustav Jung's analytical psychology. Reaching, discovering and maintaining self-respect by getting lost and finding oneself – this is, in my view, the main subject of "Orlando" and the main subject of Campbell's monomyth theory. Mythological storytelling is one of the methods of psyche's integration. It allows for a more complete and more multidimensional connection with reality. I will take a closer look at this method in the introduction and the first chapter. The second chapter is dedicated to the portrayal of Joseph Campbell's theory by bringing closer the three-stages of hero's journey. In the last chapter, I will read the Orlando's – poet and writer – journey through the lenses of the monomyth theory.

El dinamismo de lo instantáneo que exigen las nuevas tecnologías parece dejar fuera de juego al objeto-libro, el cual requiere de una calma y un tiempo para su lectura que actualmente es un lujo. No obstante, en este escenario aparentemente apocalíptico para el objeto libro, la literatura y su capacidad de “contarnos” algo es transmitida a los nuevos soportes que ofrece el siglo XXI, en donde la relación entre la materialidad de la obra y su recepción es el vértice inicial para su abordaje. El exponencial desarrollo tecnológico de los videojuegos los está presentando como una nueva materialidad mediadora entre las narrativas/experiencias estéticas y el receptor, bajo un formato en donde el lector/espectador tiene un rol activo superior al que puede ofrecer un libro, una película o una obra performática pues los videojuegos contienen el potencial para llevar la experiencia de la narración hacia la búsqueda de nuevas formas de transmisión de una experiencia que estimule al espectador a ir más allá de la recepción pasiva. Además, las nuevas plataformas tecnológicas ya se permiten esa clase de interacciones tanto a nivel físico como virtual, las que no habían sido del todo exitosas en las distintas artes “tradicionales”. Para los alcances de esta ponencia, se considerará al videojuego Journey (2012), de Thatgame Company, dado su posicionamiento paradigmático como lo que muchos críticos del tema han catalogado como game art y, además, dado el hito que representa en la brevísima historia de los videojuegos en tanto apuesta por una narrativa inversiva para el jugador, cuya experiencia se construye desde un minimalismo -o carencia- de los recursos típicos de los videojuegos para dar paso a una amplitud interpretativa que bien podría comparársela con la de los grandes clásicos literarios.

Elevating video games to the same aesthetic level as other forms of representational art, this paper explores humankind's inherent drive towards aesthetic beauty and the creation of meaning. To analyse this specific type of player, slumbering in all of us, I propose the emancipated player. The emancipated player represents an open-minded and critical player type who willingly engages in the act of play and who primarily wants to experience play's aesthetic effect. As a refinement of player involvement in video games, the emancipated player's experience in the gameworld can be regarded as a specific phenomenology of play and becomes particularly fruitful for the analysis of virtualized storyworlds or video game narratives.

El texto explora el primer acercamiento de Erwin Broner a la isla de Ibiza en 1934. Indaga en las razones que llevaron a este arquitecto alemán a enamorarse de este lugar hasta el punto de asentarse allí y construir su propia casa. El artículo se sustenta en dos pilares fundamentalmente: por un lado, en los datos biográficos del arquitecto alemán y, por otro, en las particularidades de Ibiza, un lugar ignoto y magnético para artistas e intelectuales a principios de siglo. Así, respecto a Broner, se entiende que se trata de una figura fundamental para comprender el fenómeno de migración culta que experimentó la isla, siendo sin duda uno de los pioneros y banderín de enganche para muchos otros. Y respecto al lugar, Ibiza y su arquitectura popular jugaron un papel fundamental en la evolución de la disciplina, encarnando el ideal Mediterráneo que fuera adoptado a principios de los treinta por la arquitectura moderna. Con esta reflexión se espera que se puedan comprender las claves que guiaron a Erwin Broner a desarrollar en la isla una arquitectura fascinante, de abierto signo moderno, pero considerada y sensible respecto al especial patrimonio natural y construido del lugar.


The text explores the Erwin Broner’s first approach to the island of Ibiza in 1934. It inquires into the reasons that led the German architect to fall in love with this place to the extent of settling there and build his own home after traveling around the world. Therefore, the text is mainly based on two pillars: first, on the biographical data of the German architect and, secondly, on the particularities of Ibiza, an unknown and magnetic place for artistsww and intellectuals in early century. Thus, regarding Broner, it is believed that it is fundamental figure to understand the phenomenon of educated migration experienced last century, being undoubtedly a pioneer and mirror for many others. And in respect for the place, Ibiza and its popular architecture –beyond its own rich history– played a key role in the development and evolution of the discipline, embodying the Mediterranean ideal adopted in the early thirties by modern architecture. This reflection is expected to address the key factors that led Erwin Broner to develop on the island in the fifties and sixties a so fascinating architecture , of a opened modern sign, but considerate and sensitive about the special natural and built heritage place.

The purpose of this qualitative case study was to gain an understanding of the journey of Black women into executive leadership positions at predominately White institutions of higher education within the United States. One research question guided this study: What are the experiences of Black women at predominately White institutions (PWIs) of higher education serving in executive leadership positions? Participants were a purposeful sample of 10 Black women executives who currently serve in executive leadership at various institutions across the country. The data collection instruments were structured interviews, member checking interviews, and a personal reflective narrative. The typological analysis approach as described by Hatch (2002) was used to analyze the data collected. The key findings were that participants affirmed five major themes that impacted their journey to executive leadership: (a) glass ceilings and sticky floors which were inclusive of marginalization, barriers,...

When the intellectuals have no choice but face the decline and destruction of their own country, they have to do some complicated choices concerning survival, career and moral courage. This paper focuses on Ban Biao, Wang Can and Cai Yan. The times, in which the lived, as well as the situations they found themselves in and their genders, all these are generally different, despite some similarities. The following questions are dealt with: how do they confront his/her own reality, establish the intention of identity? Furthermore, in the way away from/return home, how do they develop their self-interpretations by the realization and description of people, things and events they encounter and experience? In short, they displayed three patterns and choices of the intellectuals which are the basic modes of traditional Chinese intellectuals facing the problems of identity.

The aim of this article is to present the circumstances of Noël Coypel’s appointment as rector of the French Academy in Rome and to trace the route of his didactic journey from Paris to Rome with the Prix de Rome scholars entrusted to him. The paper is an attempt to answer the following questions: why a more difficult route through the Alps was chosen (and not, for example, a river and sea route), in what way was the journey edu cational, and what role did the documents given to Coypel play in securing the expedition. The article is based on an analysis of administrative records during the reign of Louis XIV, lists of superintendents and directors of the French Academy in Rome, accounts of royal buildings, and minutes of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Paris. The paper uses the analytical method, the comparative method, the synthetic method, source criticism, argumentum ex silentio inference, and the geographical method when discussing the itinerary. Although the trip was purposeful and related to Coypel’s new position, he designed it in such a way as to not so much get to the destination quickly, but to show his students as much as possible. Coypel introduced the royal scholars to masterpieces of painting and sculpture at centers along a route through Dijon, Lyon, Chambéry, the Mont Cenis Pass, Turin, Milan, Bologna and Florence. The crossing of the Alps, though danger ous, was most often chosen because of the artistic reputation of the cities there. The trip was educational at the expense of comfort or safety. Coypel, as a guide and teacher (paidagōgós) led his charges by overseeing their learning during and through the journey. Wandering to the Eternal City was part of a painter’s education (paideía) in the seventeenth century and was part of Coypel’s didactic work allowing young people to be inspired by direct exposure to masterpieces. The journey had an eminently didactic and artistic character, but also an initiatory one, as it gradually initiated and prepared the students for the experience of Rome, the center of artistic life at that time.

Sayları minlərə, hətta on minlərə çıxan alimlər, tələbələr, dərvişlər, ravilər ordusu şəhər-şəhər, mədrəsə-mədrəsə gəzərkən məqsədləri sadəcə kitablar və müəllimlər tapmaq deyildi. Bu əsrdə elm dünyasında belə bir sual gündəmdə idi: «Elm öyrədən – kitablardır, yoxsa müəllimlər?». İlk ayəsi «Oxu!» olan kitaba inananların bu suala verdikləri cavabın «müəllimlər» olması çox maraqlıdır. Dövrün alimlərinə görə, «kitablar öz-özünə danışmadıqları üçün, bütün hallarda onlarla ünsiyyət yaradan bilginlərə ehtiyac vardır, buna görə də müəllimlərin üstünlüyü qəbul edilməlidir». Lakin yetkin alim tapmaq və ondan elm öyrənmək də son vasitə deyildi. Bəs bunun səbəbi nə idi? IX əsrdə iqtisadi və siyasi baxımdan ad çıxaran şəhərlərin elm mərkəzləri müxtəlif kimliklərdən olan insanlarla dolub-daşırdı. Bu insanları bir-birindən ayıran – uzun adlarının sonunda daşıdıqları «əl-Bərdəi», «əl-Naxçıvani», «əl-Arrani», «əl-Şirvani», «əl-Xorasani», «əl- Bitlisi» və s. nisbələrdi. Onların bir çoxu elm üçün həyatlarının yarısını yollarda keçirmişdilər. Niyə? Məqaləmizin məqsədi məhz bu suala cavab axtarmaqdır.


The scientific journeys that started in the Muslim world in the 8 th century resulted in a different movement in the vast geography from Turkestan to Andalusia. Science seekers sometimes joined the large 25-kilometer-long trading caravans. While journeying from city to city and from madrasa to madrasa, scholars, students, dervishes and storytellers, numbering in the thousands and even tens of thousands, were not aimed only at finding books and teachers. In this century, the scientific world was looking for an answer to the question «Which is the source of knowledge? Teachers or books?» It is very interesting that those who believe in a book whose first verse starts by saying «Read!» think it is teachers. Scholars of that period believed that «since books do not speak for themselves, in all cases, there is a need for scholars that communicate with them; therefore, the advantage of teachers must be recognized». However, finding experienced scholars and learning science from them was not the last method. What was the reason for this? In the 9 th century, the scientific centers of the cities well-known for their economic and political potential were full of people of different identities. What separated these people were their nicknames such as al-Bardai, al-Nakhchivani, al-Arrani, al-Shirvani, al-Khorasani, al-Bitlisi, etc. Many of them have spent half their lives on roads to obtain scientific knowledge. Why? Our article focuses on finding answers to these questions.

The study focuses on Semih Kaplanoglu's film Egg (2007) which is the first film of his trilogy (Milk, 2008 and Honey, 2009) from Turkey. The authors' aim is to demonstrate the reconstruction of the Provinces as a space of consciousness (or mindfulness) of the hero Yusuf. So the film refers to the "story" of Joseph in the Quran. Yusuf's "story" and the religious rituals such as to sacrifice an animal become guides to read the film. By textual analysis the authors attempt to map connections between Deleuze's time image, Kracauer's found story, Bonitzer's conception of off screen, Maurois's cinéma pur and Gürbilek's conceptions of the Turkish provinces. The "found story" of the film which extends from embryonic story patterns and transforms itself into a well-contoured story (egg). The pupa state of the story is temporary; the flow of the story leads the spectator and the hero to the "Egg".

This article will compare a historical document, the Relationship (1497) of Alvaro Velho, with a literary work, the Peregrinação de Barnabé das Índias (1998) of a contemporary Portuguese writer called Mario Claudio. The reason for this comparison is that, seeing the documentary's first trip to India images, summarized with splendor in its military power and technicality in the exhibition of new scripts, calculations and navigation practices, what we have in reality is a great silence on physical and mental weaknesses of the crew, as well as a silent about the view of the eastern communities that received such company. Not to mention the possible censure that the relationship had passed after the end of the company, especially hiding the negatives points, which are completely absent from the historical version considered official . Is in the gray area of this historical episode that the great novelist mentioned seems to have found his field. The lack of concrete data on this journey of discovery, he appealed to the contextualization, especially when he explore a possible historical imaginary around the episode. Sensible to the research of cultural history, Mário Cláudio invested in the mental habits and in the fantastic forms that reappear in almost all areas of the Renaissance current life. So he invests in a denser representation of the Gama’s trip, integrating it to a complex historical imaginary.

The journey of the Portuguese Magellan, one of the greatest adventures attempted by a man in the sixteenth century, had an inauspicious end for its deviser (Magellan died in Mactan on April 27, 1522). But even more inauspicious was the narration of his adventure because the only ship of the initial expedition, which returned home, was led by a Spaniard against him. The text retraces the first testimonies of the voyage, especially taking into consideration the press of the navigations and voyages that that adventure spread throughout the world.

The article is an analysis of the novel by Michał Ajvaz − Other City through the prism of the
protagonist’s journey from the book to the library. Found in an old antique bookshop in Prague,
the volume in a velvety purple cover, written in a script not belonging to any of the peoples living
on earth, is the beginning of a fantastic adventure of the main character-narrator. The mysterious
book turns out to be a sign pointing to the space of another city, whose limits extend ‘in the
twilight of the margins of our narrow reality’. The most unobvious places in Prague become the
moments of contact between two spaces which are built as a mirror analogy. The most important
gate to another city (world) is the university library Clementium, which is a bipartite structure
− the library flows smoothly into the jungle. There, books and shelves form a kind of compost,
culture is absorbed by nature and books, as paper artefacts, seem to symbolically return to it.

Semih Kaplanoğlu’nun, Yusuf üçlemesinin (Süt, 2008 ve Bal, 2009) ilki olan Yumurta (2007) filmine odaklanan bu çalışmada yazarların amacı, filmin kahramanı Yusuf’un ruhsal yolculuğunda taşrayı bir farkındalık alanı olarak nasıl yeniden kurduğunu ortaya koymaktır. Kuran’daki Yusuf öyküsüne gönderme yapan filmde Yusuf’un öyküsü ve kurban kesme gibi dinsel ritüller, filmi okuma konusunda kılavuzluğu üstlenirler. Metin analizi aracılığı ile yazarlar, Deleuze’ün zaman imge, Kracauer’in bulunmuş öykü, Bonitzer’in ekran-dışı, Maurois’in saf sinema ve Gürbilek’in taşra kavramlarını ilişkilendirerek filmi okurlar. Filmdeki “bulunmuş öykü”, embiryonik öykü örüntülerinden çıkar ve kendisini iyi tasarlanmış bir öyküye (yumurtaya) dönüştürür. Öykü kozanın içinde geçiçi bir süre kalır, akış izleyiciyi ve kahramanı “Yumurta”ya ulaştırır.

This papers offers a close reading of several stories included in Jump and Other Stories, concentrating on the main imagery used by Gordimer to elucidate the movement taking place along the stories.  In particular, it seeks to show how pieces of garment serve as metaphors for the paths chosen by the different protagonists and the cultural and social institutions whose conventions they practice. A focus will be placed on the various institutions referred to throughout these stories, e.g., marriage, prison, holiday, parenthood, home, religion, which are poetically hinted at by means of clothing items and accessories, ranging from trousers and a warm coat to an old doek. This use of imagery will be read bearing in mind Gilbert's notions, stating that costume imagery used by modernist women writers tends to be "radically revisionary in a political as well as a literary sense" (1980).

This doctoral thesis reexamines the question of textuality in the work of Robert Smithson, focusing on the operations of correspondence between his texts and his purely visual work. This functions through what I call “temporal strategies”, namely, the dialectics of site/nonsite, “de-architecturing”, “new monumentality”, cinematic consciousness and entropy. The study focuses on Semih Kaplanoglu's film Egg (2007) which is the first film of his trilogy (Milk, 2008 and Honey, 2009) from Turkey. The authors' aim is to demonstrate the reconstruction of the Provinces as a space of consciousness (or mindfulness) of the hero Yusuf. So the film refers to the "story" of Joseph in the Quran. Yusuf's "story" and the religious rituals such as to sacrifice an animal become guides to read the film. By textual analysis the authors attempt to map connections between Deleuze's time image, Kracauer's found story, Bonitzer's conception of off screen, Maurois's cinéma pur and Gürbilek's conceptions of the Turkish provinces. The "found story" of the film which extends from embryonic story patterns and transforms itself into a well-contoured story (egg). The pupa state of the story is temporary; the flow of the story leads the spectator and the hero to the "Egg".

Currently citizens are exposed to a large amount
of information presented through various means. This
torrent of information requires skills that are not only
limited to the reproduction and decoding of signs and
symbols but, they must be able to interpret and express
themselves through different means and in more than
one language. (Crystal, 2011) In this sense, the concepts
related to literacy practices around the world
have been transformed towards a more humanistic
approach in which the production and understanding
of written discourse is appreciated as a tool for personal
growth, including in this the use of Information
and Communication Technology (ICT). With this in
mind, a historical journey of the concept of literacy in
Venezuela is exposed in order to start a deeper study in
the future, that reconstructs the concept of literacy and
reorients the school practices of reading and writing in
the country, through the frame of critical rationalism and
unlearning (Andrade, 2005 y Popper, 2008). This study
was based on a documentary review of the sources
available in official media regarding the teaching of reading
and writing in Venezuela, providing as a main conclusion
that not only is there no consensus on the vision
and methodology for literacy, but also the mentioned
rethinking becomes necessary.

The present paper investigates into one of the important subject in mystic conduct i.e. Panoramic Journey within mystical texts up to Hegira 7th century (14th AD century). After purposing an introduction about this journey, author deals with definition of (mystic) conduct and wayfaring and history of journey in Quran and Islamic Traditions (Hadith) and explained them briefly. The author has also extracted types of conduct and journey from mystic texts and introduced them and then dealt with definition of sophists’ goals concerning to this journey and the needed tools for such conduct and then explained about ceremonies of journey and for entering into Khanghah (Sophist Convent) and the relation of Sophist Shekhs (masters) with this conduct. At the end, author has expressed the impacts and benefits of Sophist journey.
