Jesuit Theater

Das Jesuitentheater als einen Gattungs- bzw. Stilbegriff zu verstehen und zu beschreiben ist aufgrund der vielfältigen und unterschiedlichen Erscheinungsformen nicht möglich. Sowenig es als Gattungs- bzw. Stilbegriff beschreibbar ist, gibt es die Theater- oder Dramentheorie der Jesuiten. Theoretische Schriften wie von Franciscus Lang SJ (1654-1725) und anderen Jesuiten lassen verschiedene Ansätze erkennen. Sie sind in ihrer Qualität und ihrem Anspruch sehr unterschiedlich und haben auch eine eigene Wirkungsgeschichte.
Aber gemeinsames Merkmal bleibt die Lust und Neugier der Jesuiten auf neue Formen und Stoffe; sie auszuprobieren, damit zu irritieren, zu provozieren und natürlich auch zu missionieren.
Jesuitentheater beschreibt zunächst einen historischen Zeitraum. Es beginnt um 1555 im süddeutschen Sprachraum und endet mit der Aufhebung des Jesuitenordens 1773 durch Papst Clemens XIV. (1769-1774). Nach der Wiedererrichtung des Jesuitenordens im Jahre 1814 bis heute engagieren sich nur noch vereinzelt Jesuiten als Schauspieler, Dramaturgen, Regisseure und Theaterleiter.
Zu Beginn skizziere ich kurz das Theater in der Renaissance. Es ist das Umfeld, in das die Anfänge des Jesuitentheaters fallen. Nach Dramaturgie, Anfängen des Jesuitentheaters, Theaterbau- und Formen des Jesuitendramas versuche ich eine stoff- und geistesgeschichtliche Periodisierung. Die Gliederung in fünf Perioden übernehme ich in weiten Teilen von Elida Maria Szarota, die mit ihrer vierbändigen Periochen-Edition1 einen sehr wichtigen Beitrag zur Erforschung des Jesuitentheaters geleistet hat. Dabei beschränke ich mich zum großen Teil auf das Jesuitentheater im süddeutschen Raum, da dieses eine führende Stellung einnimmt und auch andere Ordensprovinzen weitgehend beeinflusst hat. Abschließend nenne ich einige Gründe für den Verlust der Bedeutung des Jesuitentheaters.

This article briefly investigates how Jesuit performances brought a substantial contribution to the development of the theatrical art during the late Renaissance and early Baroque period. The discussion below does not intend to be exhaustive, nevertheless, it aims to offer a synthetic overview of the most important theatrical improvements introduced by the Jesuits during the period examined.

The origins of the Jesuit school theatre trace back to the second half of the 16th
century, but its development in Poland only occurred in the 17th and 18th centuries.
The idea of the Jesuit school theatre was taken from the Johannes Sturm’s Gymnasium in Strasbourg. The Jesuits adopted medieval mystery and morality plays, but they gave a completely different character to their theatre. They created theatre standards, ex panded the chain of theatres, popularised their theatre in the society, made the theatre a tool of education and upbringing, applied technical innovations enhancing theatre expression and illusion, and placed authentic props on the stage. The Jesuit school theatre was initiated by the public recitations in Collegium Romanum (1554) and Collegium Germanicum (1555). The Jesuit school theatre functioned in the cities and in the provinces, performing until 1773, which saw the dissolution of the Society of Jesus.
Each performance was preceded by posters and invitations. The Jesuit teachers were
the authors of the plays, and the schoolboys of the Jesuit colleges were the actors. The school theatre developed intellectually and socially, it also taught Christian morality, piety and patriotism. This theatre presented various plays – from Eucharistic dialogues to Nativity plays. Performances took place in the church, a special college hall or in its courtyard, in the streets and squares of cities, but the college hall was the most popular place for performances. In addition, the Jesuits made the theatre a compulsory subject in their colleges. Before the advent of the professional theatre in Poland in the 18th century, the Jesuit school theatre was the most important native theatrical scene of the modern epoch.

In the late 16th Century Jacobus Pontanus wrote a comedy by the title Stratocles sive bellum (Stratocles or War). Pontanus (1542-1626) taught Rhetoric and Humanities at the Jesuit university of Dillingen (Bavaria) and at the Jesuit school St. Salvator in Augsburg. Topic of the play is to dissuade students from enrolling in the military.
