Hospital Waste

Objectives: Purpose of study was to highlight certain aspects of hospital waste management status in health facilities providing health care in an urban area. This study is focused on awareness of health facilities about Central Pollution Control Board rules, hospital waste management training status, maintenance of records and accident reporting system and proper disposal of hospital waste. The importance of this study is to create the necessary awareness to the Government, Charitable, and Private Hospitals/Clinics/Diagnostic centers staff of Jaipur, regarding the health risk of hospital waste.  Methods: All the health facilities registered with Chief medical officer of urban Jaipur are included in the study. Results: It was observed that of the 19  health care facilities under study, only 52.63% health care facilities were registered with State Pollution Board for biomedical waste management. It was observed that only 68.42% study units were aware of existence of Central Pollution Control Board Rules on Biomedical Waste Management. Only 36.84% of the health care facilities had trained staff; 47.36% of all health care facilities were maintaining records; none of the facilities had any type of accident reporting system. Hospital waste segregation and utilization of offsite treatment facilities is happening in only two-third of health facilities (among qualified practitioners), which is grossly inadequate. Conclusion: Hospital waste management issues remain a challenge yet to be addressed as the present study reveals gross inadequacies in most of the health facilities of the study area.

Medical wastes are considered as a hazardous waste because they contain toxic materials, infectious, or non-infectious wastes and they are considered as a hazard to millions of patients, health care workers, and visitors. Treatment processes for medical wastes comprise autoclaving, microwaving, chemical disinfection, irradiation, plasma system, and incineration. Incineration is a thermal process, which destroys most of the waste including microorganisms. Combustion process must be under controlled conditions to convert wastes containing hazardous materials into mineral residues and gases. The study was conducted on public sentience about associated problems with disposition of hospital discarded on the encompassing environment and its impacts on anthropoid and the surrounding environment. Data embodied through questionnaire consultation of local occupants, ego reflection and secondary informants. The investigation was conducted at Tangail Municipal areas, Kumudini Hospital at Mirzapur, Tangail and Gazipur Sadar Upazila, Gazipur. In the survey a hundred- respondents were questioned and the final result demonstrates, hospital wastes are greatly creditworthy as diseases and defective odor. As a resultant role, general people and environment confronts numerous troubles due to the dumping of hospital wastes. Significant differences among the respondents in their level of environmental awareness are also discovered in the study.

Background: Rapid growth in the number of hospitals globally is leading to increased hospital waste production jeopardizing humans and environment. This survey was conducted to assess hospital waste disposal practice in a tertiary care hospital. Material & Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out at a tertiary care hospital of D.I.Khan, from May 1, 2013 to December 7, 2013. A written consent of hospital administrator and 25 sanitary workers was obtained before hand. Twenty-five units were selected for study including five departments and 20 inpatient wards. Convenient sampling method was used. Study instrument was a checklist and interview from Medical Superintendent and all sanitary workers.
