History of Telecommunications

Als Motto für die Ausstellung und das Begleitbuch wurde gewählt „Navigare necesse est“. Dieses Motto hat uns Plutarch (um 45 – um 125 n.Chr.) überliefert. Es geht auf den römischen Feldherrn Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus (106–48 v.Chr.) zurück, der für die Getreideversorgung Roms verantwortlich war und den Seeleuten, die wegen des Sturms nicht auslaufen wollten, zugerufen haben soll: „Navigare necesse est, vivere non est necesse“ (Seefahrt tut not, Leben ist nicht nötig). Dieses Motto „Seefahrt tut not“ wurde populär, weil diesen Titel auch ein Roman des norddeutschen Schriftstellers Gorch Fock [Johann Kinau] (1880–1916) trägt.
„Navigare necesse est“ – das erkannten nicht nur die Römer. Ohne die Erkenntnisse der Seefahrer wären die Entdeckungen im 15. und 16. Jahrhundert und der Handel mit aller Welt nicht möglich gewesen. Der Leitsatz findet sich auf vielen Dingen, die in Verbindung zur Seefahrt stehen, auf Gebäuden, Schiffen oder auf Sanduhren.1 Die Inschrift des Portals des Hauses der Seefahrt in Bremen lautet ähnlich: „Es ist notwendig, Schifffahrt zu treiben, es ist nicht notwendig zu leben.“ Bei dem Service „Navigare“ von
Gotthardt wurde der Spruch abgewandelt in „Navigare vivere est“.
Der Wort Navigation stammt aus dem Lateinischen „navis agere“ und bedeutet „ein Schiff führen“. Im Zentrum des Interesses steht die Bestimmung der Position auf See. Dafür entwickelte man eine Vielzahl von immer verfeinerten Instrumenten (Kompaß, Jakobsstab, Sextant, Chronometer, usw. bis zur Funk-, Radartechnik und zum GPS). Ausgehend von Koppelnavigation wurden im Laufe der Zeit neue Sensoren und Meßprinzipien entwickelt, mathematische und technische Neuheiten führen dazu, daß die Navigation als selbstständige Wissenschaft mit vielen Anwendungsmöglichkeiten etabliert wurde. Der Begriff, der anfangs auf die Seefahrt beschränkt war, hat sich heute erweitert bis zur virtuellen Navigation:
• Navigation auf See (Astronomische und terrestrische Navigation, Funk- und Radartechnik)
• Navigation in der Luft- und Raumfahrt
• Navigation auf der Straße (Satellitennavigation GPS, Navigationssysteme)
• Navigation bei Tieren (z.B. bei Vögeln, Walen, Seehunden)
• Navigation im Internet.

This chapter surveys the history of telecommunications from a global perspective and highlights three influential interpretative traditions. It has two parts. The first part defines “telecommunications” and sketches the main dimensions of four telecommunications networks over a two-hundred-year period – the optical telegraph, the electric telegraph, the landline telephone, and the mobile telephone (and its predecessor, the wireless telegraph). The second part shows how historical scholarship on topics in the history of telecommunications has been shaped by three intellectual traditions: the Large Technical Systems (LTS) approach; political economy; and the Social Construction of Technology (SCOT).

Telecommunications with a purpose is a research article that looks at the origins and development of Public Communications in Puerto Rico from 1942 to 1961. The creation of Puerto Rico’s Communications Authority in 1942—while Rexford G. Tugwell served as Designated Governor and Luis Muñoz Marín as President of the Senate in Puerto Rico—is the starting point for examining the Puerto Rican government’s plans for the development of the telegraph, telephone, radio and public television. This project led, in 1961, to the creation of WIPM-TV, Channel 3, as part of the Department of Public Instruction’s Radio and Television Service. This essay provides a reappraisal of the work of Rafael Delgado Márquez, who, as the first Administrator of Puerto Rico’s Communications Authority, first General Manager of WKAQ-TVand first General Administrator of WIPR-TV, emerges as the most influential figure in the development of Public Telecommunications in Puerto Rico.

En 1974 la administración del Partido Popular bajo el gobernador Rafael Hernández Colon adquirió exitosamente la Puerto Rico Telephone Company (PRTC), cuyo dueño previo había sido el conglomerado International Telephone and Telegraph (ITT.). El estudio busca entender las causas y consecuencias de lo que se consideró ser un cambio monumental en la estructura telefónica de la isla. Además de identificar los elementos estructurales impulsando la adquisición, tal como factores demográficos y económicos, la tesis provee una mirada al crecimiento letárgico a través del siglo de la telefonía en la isla y su impacto social. También incorpora el crecimiento de la clase media puertorriqueña de la zona metropolitana, que había constituido un papel importante del cambio estructural económico de la isla a mitad de siglo. Quizás su mayor contribución es su análisis tecnológico, identificando cambios en las oficinas centrales a mitad de siglo, al igual que la incorporación eventual de la telefonía móvil al final del siglo XX.

El artículo analiza con nuevas fuentes los orígenes de la Unión Telegráfica Internacional (hoy, Unión Internacional de las Telecomunicaciones), describiendo, en particular, el papel económico, político y técnico jugado por la Suiza para determinar su nacimiento y su peculiar estructura organizativa durante los años 1855-1875. La historia de la Unión Telegráfica ha sido descuidada por la historia de las telecomunicaciones y el papel de la Suiza en sus orígenes ha sido prácticamente ignorado para los historiadores. El papel de la Suiza se basa sobre tres rasgos: 1) la sede del Bureau fue Berna, la capital Suiza; 2) hasta la segunda guerra mundial el secretario de la Unión fue un funcionario suizo; 3) el Bureau fue un órgano directamente controlado por el gobierno suizo. Nuestro principal asunto es que la política económica suiza, centrada en la neutralidad, en la diplomacia, en el internacionalismo y en la capacidad técnica, influyó mucho sobre los orígenes de la Unión Telegráfica.

The Gillard Labor Government was returned to office on 14 September 2010 with the support of the Australian Greens and three independent MPs – all of whom had strongly supported the National Broadband Network. Indeed the two NSW Independents informed the public on 7 September that the NBN was a crucial reason for their choosing to support the Gillard Government. Given the Coalition Opposition’s trenchant attacks on the NBN throughout the election campaign, it can be accurately said that the Australian electorate on 21 August voted, by a very narrow majority, for a Government based on the parties and independents that would support the implementation of Labor’s NBN policy.  It is difficult to find any other policy issue on which there was such a gulf between the positions of the winning and losing parties.

„Von Hertz bis Handy“
Warum gibt es eine Ausstellung zu Heinrich Hertz in Hamburg? Heinrich Rudolf Hertz (1857–1894) wurde am 22. Februar 1857 – also vor 150 Jahren – in Hamburg geboren. Nach ihm wurde der Hamburger Fernsehturm benannt. Was waren seine bedeutenden Leistungen? Der Physiker Heinrich Hertz machte 1886/88 in Karlsruhe seine epochemachende Entdeckung. Er untersuchte schnelle elektrische Schwingungen und die Ausbreitung der elektromagnetischen Wellen. Dabei stellte er fest, daß die elektromagnetischen Wellen die typischen Eig enschaften des Lichts wie Reflexion, Brechung und Polarisation besaßen und sich mit Lichtgeschwindigkeit ausbreiteten. Mit seinen Experimenten bestätigte Hertz die Voraussagen der Maxwellschen Elektrodynamik und der elektromagnetischen Lichttheorie. Er gab auch den vier Maxwellschen Grundgleichungen der Elektrodynamik die heutige Gestalt. Die von ihm entdeckten Hertzschen Wellen bilden die Grundlage der Funktechnik, die sich ab den 1890er Jahren entwickelte. Hertz’ Nachweis des Einflusses ultravioletten Lichtes auf die elektrische Entladung (1887) führte zur Entdeckung des äußeren lichtelektrischen Effektes und seiner Klärung durch Wilhelm Hallwachs (1859–1922). Hertz beobachtete 1892 den Durchgang von Kathodenstrahlen durch dünne Metallschichten – ein wichtiger Hinweis dafür, daß die Ma-
terie zum großen Teil aus leerem Raum besteht. Philipp Lenard (1862–1947) erforschte dann später eingehend die Kathodenstrahlen (schnell fliegende Elektronen). Ebenfalls stammt von Hertz die exakte Definition der Härte. In der letzten großen Arbeit von Hertz – den „Prinzipien der Mechanik“ – sind Gedanken, Ideen und Zusamemnhänge enthalten, wie man sie später bei Einstein wiederfindet. Die Wirkung von Hertz umfaßt die Entwicklung der drahtlosen Telegraphie, des Radios, des Fernsehens, des Computers, des Mobiltelefons, usw. Die Entdeckung der elektromagnetischen Wellen durch Hertz bildet also die Voraussetzung unseres heutigen Kommunikations- und Medien-Zeitalters. Mit dem Namen Hertz verbunden ist das Heinrich-Hertz-Institut für Schwingungsforschung, gegründet 1927 von der Deutschen Reichspost und dem Verband Deutscher Elektrotechniker. „Hertz“ (Hz) wurde 1935 als physikalische Einheit der Frequenz (Anzahl der Schwingungen pro Sekunde) von der „International Electrical Commission“ (IEC) eingeführt (Vorschlag von Seiten Deutschlands 1930). In diesem Begleitbuch zur Ausstellung widmen sich – nach dem Überblicksartikel
der Herausgeberin – die beiden Artikel von Karl Heinrich Wiederkehr ganz besonders dem Leben und Werk von Heinrich Hertz und seinen Experimenten. Der Artikel von Jan Gollwitzer schildert detailliert die Anfänge der Funktechnik. Schließlich beschäftigt sich der Artikel von Hans Blank mit der Entwicklung des Seefunks – ein für Hamburg besonders interessantes Thema.
Die Ausstellung, konzipiert von Karl Heinrich Wiederkehr und Gudrun Wolfschmidt, beleuchtet in zehn Abschnitten die Entwicklung der Physik vor Hertz, dann stehen Leben undWerk von Heinrich Hertz im Zentrum, schließlich wird die vielseitige Wirkung dargestellt, die Anwendung der Hertzschen Wellen. Die Ausstellung wurde mit verschiedenen Schwerpunkten in Hamburg gezeigt – und zwar zunächst an der Heinrich-Hertz-Schule (150 Jahre Heinrich Hertz – 100 Jahre Heinrich-Hertz-Schule) und am Landesinstitut für Lehrerbildung und Schulentwicklung (Physik mit Her(t)z), dann am Johanneum und bei DESY mit dem Thema Von Hertz zum Handy, ebenso in Wittenberg, unterstützt vom Freundeskreis Wilhelm Weber. Allen Institutionen sei für die Ermöglichung der Präsentation herzlich gedankt. Die Eröffnung der Ausstellungen erfolgte jeweils mit einem Experimentalvortrag, meist von PD Dr. Karl Heinrich Wiederkehr. Alle Texte der Ausstellung sind in diesem Buch im Katalogteil veröffentlicht.

Los inicios de la telefonía en España tuvieron como protagonistas a algunos personajes que además de con las incertidumbres inherentes a toda nueva tecnología, tuvieron que hacer frente a las reticencias surgidas en el seno del gobierno debido a las posibles amenazas que podía traer consigo el novedoso servicio de comunicaciones. Emilio Rotondo fue una de las personalidades que mostró gran iniciativa, tanto en España, al frente de la sucursal en Madrid de una compañía americana de telefonía, como en las principales ciudades del norte de Marruecos, donde con su propia empresa fue el auténtico pionero en establecer el servicio telefónico.

Si la télévision a souvent été étudiée dans son contenu ou en tant que médium de masse, elle a plus rarement été l’objet d’une histoire de ses dispositifs compris en tant qu’agencements entre une représentation, un appareillage et un (télé)spectateur.

Cet ouvrage propose de parcourir l’histoire de certains dispositifs télévisuels fonctionnant sur le principe générique d’une transmission à distance de données, d’images et/ou de sons. Les études rassemblées dans ce volume s’intéressent autant aux machines fictives du XIXe siècle, qu’au dispositif « standard » de l’appareil électronique à usage privé, en passant par les nombreuses variantes utopiques et actualisées. La télévision est donc déclinée autant à travers ses réceptions critiques et ses fantasmatiques que via les technologies qui la mettent en jeu, à savoir du Téléphonoscope à YouTube.

Participant à une archéologie de l’audiovision, ce livre dirigé par Mireille Berton (Section d’histoire et esthétique du cinéma) et Anne-Katrin Weber (Section d’histoire et esthétique du cinéma) prend en considération un ensemble aussi large que possible de dispositifs télévisuels dont la télévision ou le cinéma ne seraient qu’une des manifestations possibles, ni plus, ni moins emblématiques de cette audiovision.

Los tempranos ensayos con teléfonos en España auguraban una más rápida implantación del servicio público telefónico, como la que se estaba produciendo en otros países desarrollados de nuestro entorno. En Madrid, desde el mismo año 1878, varios pioneros plantearon iniciativas para ofrecer este servicio, pero tuvieron que luchar con la indefinición por parte de las diferentes administraciones, y las dudas y la falta de ideas claras acerca de la correcta estrategia a seguir con respecto a la nueva tecnología, lo que a la postre influyó de manera importante, tras varios años luchando por la ansiada autorización, en que no consiguieran obtenerla.

Business history can be a valuable, even critical element in teaching international management – not only at elite institutions and at postgraduate level, but at universities of applied sciences and in undergraduate education, too. It is specifically relevant for programs with a focus on Europe. Students should be given a chance to discover common and connected pasts of European enterprise. The article offers a rationale for curriculum integration and discusses case selections and teaching methods for non-historians. Five exemplary themes are presented: East India companies, financial market bubbles, telegraphy, the Suez Canal, and the emergence of airlines.
Zusammenfassung
Unternehmensgeschichte kann ein wertvoller, sogar kritischer Beitrag in der Vermittlung des internationalen Managements sein – nicht nur an elitären Einrichtungen und im Master, sondern auch an Fachhochschulen und in Bachelor-Studiengängen. Besonders relevant ist sie für Studiengänge mit Fokus Europa. Studenten sollten eine Chance erhalten, die gemeinsame und zusammenhängende Vergangenheit europäischer Unternehmenstätigkeit zu entdecken. Der Artikel begründet die Integration ins Curriculum und diskutiert Fallauswahl und Lehrmethodik für Nichthistoriker. Eine exemplarische Auswahl von fünf Themen wird gezeigt: Ostindienkompanien, Finanzmarkt-Blasen, Telegrafie, der Suezkanal und die Entstehung von Fluggesellschaften.

This article has a double aim: one empirical–historical and one theoretical. First, it analyzes how the idea of an " alternative " use of wireless (namely, broadcasting) emerged and was debated inside the British Marconi Company in the first two decades of the 20th century. This historical part, based on unpublished sources preserved in the Marconi Archives, shows that this idea was (rationally) opposed by the majority of company's management. Second, this article aims to place private companies at the center of media historiography, and more in general media studies, through a multifocal approach.

Only 19 years after a timid introduction of telephony in Spain and seven years before the founding of the National Telephonic Company of Spain, Pascual Salmerón Gómez records his two patents: "Duplex telephonic" and "Simultaneous duplex telephonic with telegraph machines". Two high technical complexity patents, registered in 1917 in the town of Arucas, province of Gran Canaria analyzed to our readers.Nephew of the inventor of the "Float Salmerón," José Salmerón Rojas and brother of Gerónimo Gómez Salmerón, inventor of "Cerealémetro" and owner of the theater Borras and with which we ended the saga Salmerón.

This paper studies the response of the Canary Islands administrations to the growing demand for telephone services beyond urban networks until the arrival / establishment of the monopoly in 1924. These networks fulfilled a social function and had an important economic impact, but its deployment posed a budgetary and managerial challenge for the limited capacities of administrative bodies, especially during the Great War and the immediate post-war period. The way to face this expenditure relied on the economic capacities of each administration, but also on their commitment to the development of this technology. The increase in the covered areas was not only a key element in the modernization of the Archipelago, but also on its territorial integration and on the linking between the Canary Islands and national life.

Liz Fell (7 March 1940 to 13 August 2020), a freelance journalist, was elected a Distinguished Fellow of the Telecommunication Society of Australia in 2003 for her notable and enduring contributions to Australian telecommunications. Amongst others, she carried out brilliant interviews over twenty years (1994-2013) for the Telecommunications Journal of Australia. This article celebrates her notable contributions to Australian telecommunications, and includes links to two of her most famous interviews, with Malcolm Turnbull MP in 2011 and with the Hon. James (Jim) Spigelman AC, Chairman of the ABC, in 2013.

The postwar , and subsequent Cold War, boom in telecommunication demanded all manner of experimental engineering and ingenious infrastructures for transmission to receive, store, sort and (re) distribute data. Exploiting the airwaves required tangible engineering of distinctive vertical forms that were peculiar to, and implied there, purpose. The slender broadcast antennae, masts and towers, festooned with aerials and receiver dishes, were positioned prominently in the landscape for unobstructed access to the Hertzian space. The structures, as well as their own physicality, informed an invisible topography across existing terrain. As dishes and horns evolved, so did the towers. An engineering led approach to the design and development might be conveniently contained by' 'form follows function'. In the case of the telecom tower in Britain, form was only able to follow the knowledge of the function and new technologies required experiment-the leading force was the General Post Office (GPO).

Tony Newstead, who died on 6 November 2017, was a pioneering figure in Australian and worldwide telecommunications network planning, as well as in Australian trad jazz as both a trumpeter and early bandleader. This obituary attempts to do justice to his career in both fields. In an Attachment, Dr Clemens Pratt provides a short memoir in appreciation of Tony's role as his career mentor and colleague, and John Burke provides an appreciation of Tony's innovatory role in pioneering open planning in Australian telecommunications.

Trevor Barr's page-turner of a novel Grand Intentions tackles the ugly side of the neo-liberalism sweeping Australia in the 1990s and 2000s. It examines the privatisation of an incumbent telecommunications carrier, and the drastic impact of its imported US corporate culture on several individuals. He deploys a cast of plausible fictional characters while allowing the narrative to be driven by an echo of real events in the Australian telecommunications industry.

The weather report became a staple of local television in the United States during the 1950s.  While viewers clearly desired weather information, it was not obvious how meteorology should be presented. Public meteorology’s existing visual culture, built upon detailed synoptic maps printed in newspapers or mailed to subscribers, did not translate onto television’s low-resolution screen. Stations and broadcasters experimented with a variety of formats, including mechanical dials, puppets, and ukulele-playing beauty queens.  By the late 1950s, this experimentation converged on a common form: a genial man narrating a simplified weather map, often illuminated by cartoonish illustrations and hand-drawn while on the air.  This style drew on perhaps the most broadly shared element of American visual culture, comic art.  Many broadcast meteorologists enlivened their forecasts with caricatures, recurring characters, stylized text, and other idioms from the language of comic strips.

This poster depicts the evolution of popular meteorology’s new visual culture. First, newspaper comic strips and magazine advertisements from the 1890s-1930s illustrate the development of comic art’s shared language.  Second, images from World War II training manuals show how comic art developed into a medium for communicating technical information to mass audiences, like teaching meteorology to student pilots. Finally, photographs from weathercasters’ memoirs and cartoon images from promotional ephemera document how comic art mediated the presentation of weather information on television. Thus, the American public’s most preferred reading material, comic strips, structured its most common scientific experience, the TV weather report.

This article proposes a methodology for studying the social history of telecommunications grounded in the interrelations and contaminations between Anglophone and Continental literature; its originality lies in the fact that it presents and discusses both traditions. Before tackling the central theme, the reasons for studying the history of telecommunications will be discussed and three different approaches will be considered. The first is the constructivist approach which, examines ‘relevant social groups’ and their decisions regarding telecommunications. The second is socio-economic and considers both path dependence theories and concepts useful in understanding the network economy: natural monopolies, economies of scale, externalities and public services. Finally, the macro-systemic approach will be considered. In our proposal these three approaches, deriving from both the Anglophone and Continental schools of thought, form a methodological basis for studying the history of telecommunications.
