Heuristics Evaluation

Usability evaluation methods have gained a substantial attention in networks particularly in Intrusion Detection System (IDS) as these evaluation methods are envisioned to achieve usability and define usability defects for a large number of practical software's. Despite a good number of available survey and methods on usability evaluation, we feel that there is a gap in existing literature in terms of usability evaluation methods, IDS interfaces and following usability guidelines in IDS development. This paper reviews the state of the art for improving usability of networks that illustrates the issues and challenges in the context of design matters. Further, we propose the taxonomy of key issues in evaluation methods and usability problems. We also define design heuristics for IDS users and interfaces that improves detection of usability defects and interface usability compared to conventional evaluation heuristics. The similarities and differences of usability evaluation methods and usability problems are summarized on the basis of usability factors, current evaluation methods and interfaces loopholes.

Este artigo expõe a alternativa presencial para aplicação de Avaliação Heurística com o objetivo de testar os
processos de procura e compra de livros nas livrarias online da Travessa, da Siciliano e da Nobel. A técnica é apresentada com utilização de 5 especialistas em usabilidade e base em 12 heurísticas como diretriz de avaliação. O final do artigo apresenta recomendações separadas e dispostas por cada heurística.

O trabalho de pesquisa apresentado neste artigo objetiva estimular a discussão a respeito da validade das Heurísticas de Jakob Nielsen como instrumento de avaliação da usabilidade – aqui entendida como eficiência, eficácia e satisfação do usuário – das interfaces web. Por meio de uma avaliação heurística feita na interface do Google – referência em interface web – questiona-se o uso deste tipo de avaliação, que tem sido feita há mais de 20 anos com base nos mesmos critérios. Analisando os resultados obtidos, que apontam que o website em questão possivelmente não atenda à maioria das heurísticas, pode-se concluir que talvez a avaliação heurística não seja o mais abrangente método para avaliar a usabilidade de interfaces de websites.

"With the advances in information technology and its increasing impact on humans and society, there has been an expanding need to spread knowledge from domain to domain. This need is not least in the area of human–computer interaction, which includes a rich culture of carrying out usability evaluations in many different domains and technology platforms. This paper aims to show how transfer of methods takes place, by explicating and formalizing the process. It will contribute to the quest for knowledge on the constituents of the process of transferring methodological knowledge and their relationships. A sectoral system of innovation approach is used to analyse the constituents of a selected sector, crisis management, where training is essential and which is rapidly adopting technology for operations and training. Two case studies are described where heuristics evaluation and user testing were applied on simulation software that allows training for crisis management. The analysis results in a process model, describing the transfer of methodological knowledge within the sectoral system of innovation framework.
