I  AM PLEASED TO HAVE MADE POSSIBLE THE PUBLICATION OF THIS BOOK IN  English based on my late brother’s book “ΠΙΚΠΟΔΑΦΝΕΣ” [Bitter Leaves of Laurel]: Encounters and experiences from the Struggle to free Cyprus from British Colonial Rule and experiences during the first Cyprus House of Representatives 1954-74. 
It is a book set in Cyprus that left many scars and a bitter legacy to Cypriots. It is a book full of anecdotes, memories, and events, and, most importantly, reflections on those events. In his life journey, Dafnis evolved from patriot/terrorist to internationalist/humanist. His religiousness developed from the confines of orthodox Cyprus to the positive values of Christianity. His patriotism shifted from a narrow, fanatic Greekness to an appreciation of Hellenic culture’s universality. 
Dafnis vividly describes his role in The National Organization of Cypriot Fighters (EOKA) and the armed campaign to free Cyprus from British colonial rule, including hiding in his home of EOKA’s leader, George Grivas.
As a pacifist-Christian in a microcosm of religious warriors, Dafnis stood out as a brilliant exception. His renunciation of violence was sealed by a question which a shepherd once asked him: “If Jesus was our Archbishop, would he spill blood for the freedom of Cyprus?” 
In the years that followed Independence, Dafnis became a reluctant Member of Parliament, disillusioned by Makarios’ duplicity and former
EOKA combatant’s corruption, the poisoned relations between GreekCypriots and Turkish Cypriots, and among Greek Cypriots themselves. He comments on many peace plans for Cyprus’s political future before and after Independence and laments Cypriots’ rejection. Resigning from Parliament for the U.S. to pursue his studies, he writes, “In 1966, I decided to resign from the Cyprus House of Representatives to travel to the United States for the opportunity to attend University since, when at an earlier time I could have attended, I was the ‘guest’ of Queen Elizabeth in Omorphita and Kokkinotrimithia Detention Camps!”
The important message from the book is Dafnis’ life and experience “Between Violence and Peace.” Revealing how, from the violence and distrust between the two Cyprus communities, it is possible to reach peaceful coexistence and cooperation as Cypriots while maintaining their distinct identities, with lessons for Greece – Turkey relations and beyond.
Film production is underway based on the book and Dafnis’ incredible life. Renowned Greek cinematographer Costas Ferris agreed to be the production director, with the film expected in 2022.

Kıbrıs sorunu her ne kadar 1950’lerden itibaren Türk kamuoyunu mesgul etmeye
baslasa da kökenleri çok eskilere, 1800’lü yılların bası hatta 1700’lü yılların sonlarına
dayanmaktadır. Kıbrıs sorununun temelleri, Kıbrıs’ı da “Büyük Yunanistan’ın” sınırları
içerisinde gösteren ve 1796 yılında yayınlanan ilk “Megali dea” haritasıyla birlikte
atılmıstır. Megali dea düsüncesi çerçevesinde sekillenen Yunan milliyetçiligi Kıbrıslı
Rumları da etkilemis ve Mora isyanıyla paralel olarak ENOSS amacıyla 1821 yılında
Kıbrıslı Rumlar tarafından Kıbrıs’ta da bir ayaklanma hazırlıgına girisilmistir.
Kıbrıs’ta ENOSS’e yönelik asıl olaylar, adanın yönetiminin 1878 yılında Osmanlı
Devleti tarafından, Rusya’ya karsı destegini alabilmek için geçici bir süre için
ngiltere’ye bırakılmasıyla baslamıs ve giderek tırmanmıstır. Giderek tırmanan ENOSS
hareketleri 1950’li yılların basında doruga çıkmıstır. Kıbrıs sorunun Rumların ENOSS
emellerine ulasmak maksadıyla giristikleri eylemler ile Türklerin buna karsı
mücadeleleri çerçevesinde gelistigi görülmektedir.
ngiltere’nin Ada yönetimini Kıbrıs halkına bırakma süreciyle birlikte 1950’li
yıllarda Rumlar ve Yunanlar “Megali dea” kapsamında “ENOSS” yani Kıbrıs’ı
Yunanistan’a baglamak maksadıyla türlü oyunlara ve insanlık dısı davranıslara
girismislerdir.
Kıbrıslı Türkler ise varlıklarını sürdürebilmek ve kendilerini korumak maksadıyla
çesitli örgütlenmelerde bulunmuslardı. Bu örgütlerden en önemlisi olan “Türk
Mukavemet Teskilatı (TMT)”, 1958 yılında kurulmus ve KKTC’nin temellerinin
atılmasında büyük rol oynamıstır.

The present analysis aims to produce a penetrating enquiry of selected aspects of the British security efforts during the conflict, which proved to be crucial in the British failure to maintain their position in Cyprus and helped widen the divide between the British and the Greek-Cypriot population. In this regard, the historical background to the rebellion is reconstructed, focusing on Britain’s strategic plans for Cyprus and how these plans contradicted the political desires of Greek-Cypriots. The research agenda also includes the utility of imposing Law and Order, which was at the core of London’s preoccupation with a final settlement of the Cyprus Question. Special mention is made of the measures undertaken to strengthen the Police and the Army as forces of Law and Order. In the final segment, the British counter-insurgency effort is placed under critical examination.

Κατά την περίοδο 1955-1959, η κρίση εμπιστοσύνης μεταξύ Βρετανίας και ελληνοκυπρίων έφτασε στο αποκορύφωμά της και μετεξελίχθηκε σε ένοπλη αντιπαράθεση. Πιο συγκεκριμένα, στην Κύπρο δημιουργήθηκε μια επαναστατική ελληνοκυπριακή οργάνωση, η Εθνική Οργάνωση Κυπρίων Αγωνιστών (ΕΟΚΑ), με στόχο τον τερματισμό της Βρετανικής κυριαρχίας και την ένωση του νησιού με την Ελλάδα. Η διένεξη έληξε το Φεβρουάριο του 1959 με τις Συμφωνίες Ζυρίχης-Λονδίνου, οι οποίες οδήγησαν στην ίδρυση της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας τον Αύγουστο του 1960.

Τα τελευταία χρόνια αναφύονται εξαιρετικές μελέτες οι οποίες φέρνουν στην επιφάνεια τη φύση των επαναστατικών δραστηριοτήτων της ΕΟΚΑ. Τα εν λόγω συγγράμματα εστιάζουν στον προμελετημένο σχεδιασμό και εφαρμογή των επιχειρήσεων, καθώς και στο ότι δεν ήταν απότοκες ενός αυθόρμητου ανοργάνωτου ξεσηκωμού των καταπιεσμένων μαζών.  Παρά ταύτα, η ιστοριογραφία δεν έχει ασχοληθεί επισταμένως με την ένοπλη εκστρατεία της ΕΟΚΑ, με αποτέλεσμα την ανεπαρκή κατανόηση των επιχειρησιακών επιλογών της ανατρεπτικής οργάνωσης. Η παρούσα εισήγηση φιλοδοξεί να καλύψει μέρος αυτού του κενού επιδιώκοντας να παρουσιάσει τη διαμόρφωση και ανάπτυξη του επιχειρησιακού προγράμματος της ΕΟΚΑ σε σχέση με τις εξελίξεις για το διεθνές καθεστώς της Κύπρου. Πιο συγκεκριμένα, θα επισημανθεί η αναμφισβήτητη εξάρτηση των στρατηγικών επιλογών του ένοπλου ενωτικού κινήματος από τις διακυμάνσεις των διεθνών πρωτοβουλιών για το Κυπριακό Ζήτημα.

Η έρευνά μας στηρίζεται στην υπάρχουσα Αγγλόγλωσση και Ελληνόγλωσση βιβλιογραφία. Επιπρόσθετα, γίνεται χρήση πρωτογενούς αρχειακού υλικού από τα Βρετανικά υπουργία Αποικιών, Εξωτερικών και Πολέμου, το οποίο φυλάσσεται στο Κρατικό Αρχείο του Ηνωμένου Βασιλείου (The National State Archives - NSA). Τέλος, πληροφορίες συγκεντρώνονται από αδημοσίευτο υλικό τόσο από τα προσωπικά αρχεία Βρετανών στρατιωτικών που βρίσκονται στο Imperial War Museum (IWM) του Λονδίνου, όσο και από το Ίδρυμα Απελευθερωτικού Αγώνα ΕΟΚΑ 1955-1959 (ΙΔΑΑΕ) στη Λευκωσία.

Μετά το τέλος του Β’ Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου, ακολούθησαν σοβαρές πιέσεις στο εσωτερικό της Βρετανικής Αυτοκρατορίας για μείωση των αυτοκρατορικών της υποχρεώσεων. Παρόλο που το Λονδίνο ανταποκρίθηκε και απομακρύνθηκε από διάφορα στρατιωτικά συμφέροντα, αποδείχτηκε εξαιρετικά αρνητικό σε οτιδήποτε θα μπορούσε να απειλήσει τις Βρετανικές κτήσεις στη Μέση Ανατολή, με τις οποίες η Κύπρος συνδεόταν άμεσα. Η Βρετανική κυβέρνηση των Εργατικών είχε λάβει ήδη δύο δύσκολες αποφάσεις: να παραχωρήσει ανεξαρτησία στην Ινδία το 1947 και να αποσυρθεί από την Παλαιστίνη το 1948. Ήταν λοιπόν απρόθυμο να συναινέσει σε οποιαδήποτε επιπρόσθετη εξέλιξη η οποία θα μπορούσε να αμφισβητήσει το υφιστάμενο status quo ή να οδηγήσει σε περαιτέρω συρρίκνωση της αυτοκρατορίας. Η συγκεκριμένη πολιτική προδιάθεση ίσχυε ιδιαίτερα για την Κύπρο, στην οποία η Βρετανία απέβλεπε να διατηρήσει άμεση κυριαρχία. Συνεπακόλουθα, ήταν σε σχέση με αυτό το υπόβαθρο που έλαβε χώρα το αδιέξοδο για το συνταγματικό μέλλον του νησιού και η έναρξη της ένοπλης δράσης της Εθνικής Οργάνωσης Κυπρίων Αγωνιστών (ΕΟΚΑ) που ακολούθησε.

Ο Ευάνθης Χατζηβασιλείου έχει ορθότατα υποδείξει πως σημείο έναρξης μιας μελέτης σχετικά με τον Κυπριακό Αγώνα συνήθως αποτελούν η δράση του Γεώργιου Γρίβα και του Αρχιεπισκόπου Μακαρίου Γ’, επειδή οι πρώτες ερμηνείες για το ένοπλο ενωτικό κίνημα βασίστηκαν σε στοιχεία που συγκεντρώθηκαν ενόσω αυτό βρισκόταν σε εξέλιξη.  Η διερεύνηση όμως ενός επαναστατικού κινήματος δε μπορεί να αποκοπεί από την προϊστορία του. Ήταν οι προσωπικότητες του Γεώργιου Γρίβα και του Αρχιεπισκόπου Μακαρίου οι πιο καταλυτικές κατά τη διάρκεια των διεργασιών που οδήγησαν στην εμφάνιση μιας ένοπλης οργάνωσης εναντίον των Βρετανών στην Κύπρο ή μήπως πρέπει να λάβουμε υπόψη άλλους παράγοντες ή σχηματισμούς; Δυστυχώς, η διαδικασία προς τη λήψη της απόφασης για την ίδρυση της ΕΟΚΑ συνήθως δεν λαμβάνεται επαρκώς υπόψη∙ αν όμως την αγνοήσουμε, θα οδηγηθούμε σε εσφαλμένα συμπεράσματα στην προσπάθειά μας να ερμηνεύσουμε την πορεία των γεγονότων για το προπαρασκευαστικό στάδιο της φυσικής εξέγερσης στην Κύπρο. Σε μια τέτοια περίπτωση, τα αποτελέσματα της έρευνάς μας ελάχιστα θα απέχουν από μια προσωποπαγή αφήγηση γύρω από το Γεώργιο Γρίβα, κάτι που παρατηρείται κυρίως στα απομνημονεύματα του αρχηγού της ΕΟΚΑ,  καθώς και στην πρώιμη Βρετανική ιστοριογραφία.  Στόχος της παρούσας ανάλυσης είναι να διεισδύσει στις οργανωτικές και πολιτικές ρίζες της ΕΟΚΑ. Η προσοχή μας, λοιπόν, θα στραφεί στην πορεία προς τη λήψη της απόφασης για την έναρξη ένοπλου αγώνα καθώς και στην ανάδειξη του Γεώργιου Γρίβα ως τον ηγέτη που θα καθοδηγούσε την εν λόγω προσπάθεια. Επιπρόσθετα, θα ανιχνεύσουμε τα στοιχεία που συντέλεσαν στη διαμόρφωση του αρχικού χαρακτήρα της ΕΟΚΑ.

Η έρευνά μας στηρίζεται στην υπάρχουσα Αγγλόγλωσση και Ελληνόγλωσση βιβλιογραφία για τον Κυπριακό Αγώνα, συμπεριλαμβανομένων σπάνιων εκδόσεων των δεκαετιών του 1960 και 1970. Επιπρόσθετα, γίνεται χρήση πρωτογενούς αρχειακού υλικού από το Βρετανικό υπουργείο Εξωτερικών, το οποίο είναι προσβάσιμο στις συλλογές του Κρατικού Αρχείου του Ηνωμένου Βασιλείου (The National State Archives - NSA) στο Λονδίνο. Τέλος, χρήσιμα μεθοδολογικά εργαλεία για την προσπάθειά μας αποτελούν υπόγειες εκδόσεις που κυκλοφορούσαν η ΕΟΚΑ και οι θυγατρικές οργανώσεις της, ΠΕΚΑ και ΑΝΕ, κατά τη διάρκεια της επανάστασης, όπως αυτές συγκεντρώθηκαν και δημοσιεύτηκαν ως συλλογές εγγράφων την περίοδο μετά την ανεξαρτησία της Κύπρου.
