Feluda

Feluda- may be the most popular sleuth in Bengali literature, and may be a fewer one who made a transition to the silver screen. And may be the only one whose creator is behind the both medium. What made Feluda- this popular and accessible to every age group in both mediums. This writing will be tying to unveil the reason behind it.

This paper investigates the contemporary afterlife of Satyajit Ray’s protagonist sleuth, Prodosh C. Mitter (Feluda) and the new media space he now inhabits. This paper sets off from the debate in this journal around Feluda’s cultural and socio-economic status, his origins, his intentions, his relation to labour, work and leisure, discourses emerging in the wake of Feluda’s fiftieth anniversary. I take the very event and its commemorative objects as the site to think through Feluda’s legacy. I work through Sandip Ray’s Double Feluda, the Feluda film released to mark the occasion, the new Feluda addatimes web series and the innumerable graphic novels, online text applications and audiobooks circulating in their wake. The contemporary I show also produces an undercurrent of nostalgia: a retro-fetish for older media forms in which Feluda is ensconced. The rest of the paper as it pans out takes mobility and migration as spectral but operative functions in Feluda’s universe. Feluda now inhabits a trans-medial universe and different urban regimes, both of which introduce intense affects of speed and travel – moving towards an action-hero status that is radically different from his earlier intellectual and rational demeanour. I thereby trace Feluda’s reinvention from a Nehruvian socialist imaginary into the corporatized action hero: his suave image connected now to a global neo-liberal aesthetic. This global, rootless cosmopolitanism triggers in its stead a constant search for identity, an exhumation of Feluda’s undead Bangal pasts.

১৯৬৫ সালের ডিসেম্বর মাসের সন্দেশ পত্রিকায় ফেলুদা সিরিজের প্রথম গল্প “ফেলুদারগোয়েন্দাগিরি” প্রকাশিত হয়। ১৯৬৫ থেকে ১৯৯৭ পর্যন্ত এই সিরিজের মোট ৩৫টি সম্পূর্ণ ও চারটি অসম্পূর্ণ গল্প ও উপন্যাস প্রকাশিত হয়েছে।ফেলুদার প্রধান সহকারী তাঁর খুড়তুতো ভাই তপেশরঞ্জন মিত্র ওরফে তোপসে ও লেখক লালমোহন গাঙ্গুলি (ছদ্মনাম জটায়ু)।

Popular Cinema in Bengal marks a decisive turn in studies of Bengali language cinema by shifting the
focus from auteur and text- based studies to exhaustive readings of the film industry.
This book covers a wide range of themes and issues, including: generic tropes (like comedy and
action); iconic figurations (of the detective and the city); (female) stars such as Kanan Bala, Sadhana
Bose and Aparna Sen; intensities of public debates (subjects of high and low cultures, taste, viewership,
gender and sexuality); print cultures (including posters, magazines and song- booklets); cinematic
spaces; and trans- media and trans- cultural traffic. By locating cinema within the crosscurrents of geopolitical
transformations, this book highlights the new and persuasive research that has materialized
over the last decade. The authors raise pertinent questions regarding ‘regional’ cinema as a category,
in relation to ‘national’ cinema models, and trace the non- linear journey of the popular via multiple
(media) trajectories. They address subjects of physicality, sexuality and its representations, industrial
change, spaces of consumption and cinema’s meandering directions through global circuits and lowend
networks.
Highlighting the ever- changing contours of cinema in Bengal in all its popular forms and proposing
a new historiography, Popular Cinema in Bengal will be of great interest to scholars of Film
Studies and South- Asian Popular Culture.
