Ecclesiology of Conciliarity

A thorough examination of the various ecclesiological problems arising from misapprehensions of conciliarity in history and theory.  The list of misapprehensions of synodality is very long. The author discusses some of the most fundamental questions that have been heard in the recent comments about the Holy and Great Council in Crete and false information regarding some important aspects of the Great Council, such as the composition of the council, the number of its participants, the way of signing, the significance of episcopal signatures, the issue of voting, and more. Μια αυτοκριτική ματιά στην εκκλησιολογική κατάσταση της σύγχρονης Ορθοδοξίας δεν μπορεί παρά να κάνει λόγο για τη συχνά παρατηρούμενη έλλειψη εκκλησιολογικής αυτοσυνειδησίας, για το νεωτερικό φαινόμενο της αυτοκεφαλίας και των εθνικών Εκκλησιών, για την αυτάρκεια ορισμένων τοπικών Εκκλησιών, για την εσωστρέφεια και τον απομονωτισμό, τον κατατεμαχισμό, ενίοτε δε και τον ανταγωνισμό μεταξύ Ορθοδόξων δικαιοδοσιών. Εξάλλου, η ολοένα και περισσότερο παρατηρούμενη έλλειψη γνήσιου οικουμενικού πνεύματος, εισάγει μεταπρατικά και με αρκετή ιστορική καθυστέρηση ένα ομολογιακό και τοπικιστικό πνεύμα, ευνοεί την εμφάνιση φονταμενταλιστικών τάσεων και καλλιεργεί φοβικά εθνικιστικά και αντιδυτικά σύνδρομα. Η ολοένα και μεγαλύτερη περιθωριοποίηση των εκκλησιαστικών κοινοτήτων στον δημόσιο χώρο των σύγχρονων κοινωνιών στις ορθόδοξες κατά παράδοση χώρες επιτείνει την εκκλησιολογική εσωστρέφεια και διαμορφώνει συνθήκες που άλλοτε ευνοούν τον εκκλησιαστικό δικανισμό και άλλοτε τον καταναλωτικό ατομισμό.

В статье описываются малоизвестные и недооцененные
в исторической литературе формы церковного управле-
ния конца синодального периода — епархиальные съезды,
ставшие заметным явлением в России начала XX века.
Документы, относящиеся к их проведению, представляют
собой важный материал для исследования зарождавшихся
в то время «практик соборности», которые являются
конкретными историческими формами как церковной, так
и социальной реальности российской жизни накануне и в
разгар революционных волнений. Их изучение представля-
ет интерес не только для историков, так как позволяет
применить опыт сравнительно недавнего прошлого для
организации приходской жизни в современных условиях.

The Future of Ecumenism in the Greek Orthodox Church : Problems and Resources.

After recalling the ambivalence with which the Orthodox Church has viewed the Ecumenical Movement, the author stresses the rise of fundamentalism, which leds him to wonder what measures might sensitize Christian people to ecumenical concerns, after which
he considers several challenges faced by the Greek Church : concialiarity, which showed the limits of the Council of Crete ; Eucharistic ecclesiology, which is contradicted by an exaggerated focus on thte episcopacy ; the distancing of the laity from the liturgyand the
administration of the Church ; the question of the relationship between Church and state.

This is my revised presentation for an intensive course on the history of the Russian Church Abroad that is offered this September via St. Cyril and Methodius Orthodox Institute in Australia, which is a part of Adelaide College of Divinity. Art design by Dmitry Tikhomirov.

The study intends to offer a critical comment of the common study of the Saint Irenaeus Joint Orthodox-Catholic Working Group "Serving Communion. Rethinking the Relationship between Primacy and Synodality". The author emphasizes that the hermeneutic issue and the emphasis on the historicity of theology are among the most original elements of the study; both are representing a welcome stimulation for the future dialogue. He also appreciates the study for its theological complexity and underlines the uniqueness of the common reading of the historical-theological context of the First Vatican Council. At the same time, among other things, it is critically suggested, that the magic formula after Ravenna 2006 (Catholics need more synodality, Orthodox more primacy) will not bring the hoped breakthrough in Orthodox-Catholic dialogue, because Roman Catholic theology sees papal primacy as a theological issue, while the Orthodox as a structural- canonical question. The challenge of the future will be not to achieve "harmony" between primacy and synodality, but to reflect together whether the Petrine ministry belongs to the essence of Church unity or not.
