Early Christian Identity Formation

The purpose of this article is to examine anti-Jewish rhetoric in the 1st and 2nd centuries CE through the analysis of Christian texts from that period. Such rhetoric is not fostered by Jewish attacks against Christian faith, but, instead, by the constant presence of Christian Judaizers (those who used to follow Jewish commandments not observed by most Christians anymore). The rhetoric in question is understood, in the article, as helping to establish frontiers between Christians and Jews and to craft Christian identity as something opposed to the realm of Jewish customs and praxis.

Este artigo tem por propósito analisar a retórica antijudaica em textos cristãos dos séculos I e II d. C. suscitada não por ataques de judeus à fé cristã, mas, diferentemente, pela repetida presença de cristãos judaizantes (que adotam regras da lei de Moisés não mais seguidas pela maioria dos cristãos). Tal retórica auxilia na construção de fronteiras entre cristãos e judeus e, nesse sentido, na elaboração de uma identidade cristã que deve ser distanciada do universo de costumes e práticas judaicos.

“Crisis” is a polyvalent concept. The word makes an ancient debut in Greek writings via the medical terminology to indicate a turning point in an illness that requires an instant decision. The conceptualization of the crisis is therefore necessarily linked to the concept of time but also to a vision of the history. In fact, in order to react to crisis “Pagans” and Christians conceived a series of chronological schemes (Ages of the world, Ages of Man, translatio imperii etc.), often giving rise to a contamination between forms and traditions. The article examines some of these schemes and some special situations in which they were called to respond to the anxieties of the moment.
“Crisi” è un concetto polivalente. Il termine debutta negli scritti della cultura greca, nell’ambito della terminologia medica, per indicare un punto di svolta in ordine ad una decisione urgente. La concettualizzazione della “crisi” è quindi necessariamente legata all’idea di tempo e, nondimeno, ad una visione della storia. In effetti, per reagire alla crisi, “pagani” e cristiani concepirono una serie di schemi cronologici, quali età del mondo, età dell’uomo, translatio imperii ecc., spesso dando origine a una contaminazione fra forme e tradizioni. L’articolo prende in esame tali schemi ed alcune situazioni particolari in cui essi furono chiamati a rispondere alle ansie del momento.
