XML is a standard of data exchange between web applications such as in e-commerce, elearning and other web portals. The data volume has grown substantially in the web and in order to effectively retrieve or store these data, it is recommended to be physically or virtually fragmented and distributed into different nodes. Basically, fragmentation design contains of two parts: fragmentation operation and fragmentation method. There are three different kinds of fragmentation operation: Horizontal, Vertical and Hybrid, determines how the XML should be fragmented. SEMPER, which was originally developed at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), is an active, multi-domain, space-based, object-oriented design support tool for integrated building performance computing. This paper discusses the key findings of a collaborative research project between National University of Singapore, Carnegie Mellon University and Temasek Polytechnic to modify and transform SEMPER prototype 1 into SEMPER-II (S2), as an internet-based computational design support environment in order to facilitate geographically distributed design collaboration. To construct high performance Web servers, system builders are increasingly turning to distributed designs. An important challenge that arises in such designs is the need to direct incoming connections to individual hosts. Previous methods for connection routing (layer 4 switching) have employed a centralized node to handle all incoming requests. In contrast, we propose a distributed approach, called distributed packet rewriting (DPR), in which all hosts of the distributed system participate in connection routing. DPR promises better scalability and fault-tolerance than the current practice of using centralized special-purpose connection routers. We describe the implementation of four variants of DPR and compare their performance. We show that DPR provides performance comparable to centralized alternatives, measured in terms of throughput and delay. Also, we show that DPR enhances the scalability of Web server clusters by eliminating the performance bottleneck exhibited when centralized connection routing techniques are utilized

This study examines the role of generic abstraction in architectural design, specifically how it facilitates exploration through formulation of a family of design schemes. We maintain that exploration in design, as it is in scientific discovery, is not solely based on serendipity, but that designers often strategically structure their explorations. We single out three instances of structuring through ‘generic abstraction ’ in the case study of Staatsgalerie by Stirling. We hypothesize that generic abstractions help designers to mentally simulate different spatial components which lead to the generation of a novel design conceptualization. In the case at hand, the abstraction processes were sustained within a distributed cognitive system that consisted of one senior and two junior designers together with external representations in the form of sketches and diagrams.
