Este artigo busca, por meio das selfies-retiradas do aplicativo Instagram com o auxílio da hashtag #Holocaustmonument-clicadas no Memorial do Holocausto (Holocaust-Mahnmal), analisar como as pessoas estão se relacionando com os espaços de luto e silêncio dentro do contexto de uso dos smartphones e de suas câmeras. O objetivo é fazer uma breve contextualização da selfie e sua historiografia dentro da História da Fotografia e do Retrato e mostrar como as selfies geram um novo paradigma de experimentação de espaços de luto e silêncio. Purpose This study aims to tap into the storytelling’s effects of evoking personal and historical memories and their emotions on travelers’ intention to visit dark tourism sites. Design/methodology/approach An experimental study was performed. The authors created a story centered on dark tourism as their stimulus. The respondents received two stories in the form of printed ads. The presence and absence of a story character manipulated the stimulus. In addition to the experimental factors, four measurement constructs were included in the model: evoked historical memory, evoked personal memory, evoked emotion and intention to visit. Findings The results show that evoking historical and personal memories leads to traveler intention to visit the dark tourism sites whether or not the character is present or absent in the story. Tourism in Lebanon has always been a key contributor to the national economy. It is one of the main sectors Lebanon depends on besides banking. In this research, dark tourism was approached as an important type of tourism that has a significant potential role in Lebanon. Unfortunately, this is not reflected in the Ministry of Tourism list of tourist’s attractions. The interviews done in this research showed that the Lebanese government gives no attention to such sites, and even dark places’ owners do not give their sites the needed attention in term of tourism development strategies. 100 questionnaires were collected in three different locations. Results showed that the youth generation in Lebanon is interested visiting dark-related destinations. The motivations and willingness to pay were studied for four different sites. Christina Schwenkel's absorbing study explores how the "American War" is remembered and commemorated in Vietnam today―in official and unofficial histories and in everyday life. Schwenkel analyzes visual representations found in monuments and martyrs' cemeteries, museums, photography and art exhibits, battlefield tours, and related sites of "trauma tourism." In these transnational spaces, American and Vietnamese memories of the war intersect in ways profoundly shaped by global economic liberalization and the return of American citizens as tourists, pilgrims, and philanthropists.

Nicht nur Leiter*innen von Gedenkstätten und Dokumentationen sehen sich heute im Umgang mit dem historischen Erbe der NS-Zeit vor einer anspruchsvollen Herausforderung, sondern auch Wissenschaftler*innen attestieren immer wieder - wie unlängst auf einer vom Institut für Zeitgeschichte München-Berlin und dem Bayerischen Landesamt für Denkmalpflege ausgerichteten Tagung in Berchtesgaden - den _schwierigen Umgang mit Relikten aus dem Nationalsozialismus in Deutschland. Dies betrifft insbesondere sog. Täterorte, wie beispielsweise das ehemalige Reichsparteitagsgelände in Nürnberg, die seit den 1990er-Jahren die Gedächtnislandschaft in Deutschland bereichern - zusätzlich zu den schon seit den 1950er-Jahren existierenden Opferorten (z. B. KZ-Gedenkstätten). Im vorliegenden Aufsatz wird der Besuch von Täter- und Opferorten in Deutschland am Beispiel der KZ-Gedenkstätte Dachau und dem ehemaligen zweiten Regierungssitz Hitlers am Obersalzberg beleuchtet. Hierbei geht es um die Frage, welche Personengruppen mit welchen Motiven, Emotionen und Erwartungen die Orte aufsuchen, und inwiefern es sich bei den Fallbeispielen um Touristenorte in einem Spannungsfeld zwischen Gedenktourismus und Dark Tourism handelt.

Tourism is a multifaceted sector, which is manifested in various forms, including dark tourism. Of late there seem to be an increase in the number of tourist opting for Dark Tourism. This paper studies the motivating factors that influence tourists to visit places that have a past which may be haunted, have a sinister past or is related to death.

Şehrin somut ve soyut kültürel mirasına göre şekillenen turlar kültür, inanç, gastronomi, hüzün, etkinlik, macera gibi birçok turizm türüne hitap etmektedir. Ayrıca sokak sanatı, sinema tarihi, bağcılık ve şarap yapımı, siyasi düşünce tarihi, müzik kültürü, tarihi şahsiyetler gibi özel ilgi alanlarına yönelik turlar da düzenlenmektedir. About the Book

We live in a society that is bombarded by news of accidents, disasters and terrorist attacks. We are obsessed by the presence of death. It is commodified in newspapers, the media, entertainment, and in our cultural consumption.

This book explores the notion of an emergent class of ‘death seekers’ who consume the spectacle of the disaster, exploring spaces of mass death and suffering. Sites that are obliterated by disasters or tragic events are recycled and visually consumed by an international audience, creating a death seekers economy. The quest for the suffering of others allows for a much deeper reinterpretation of life, and has captivated the attention of many tourists, visiting sites such as concentration camps, disasters zones, abandoned prisons, and areas hit by terrorism. This book explores the notion of the death seekers economy, drawing on the premise that the society of risk as imagined by postmodern sociology sets the pace to a new society: Thana-Capitalism. The chapters dissect our fascination with other’s suffering, what this means for our own perceptions of the self, and as a tourist activity. It also explores the notion of an economy of impotence, where citizens feel the world is out of control.

This chapter offers a critical analysis of the burgeoning cottage industry of cyber- and actual Toraja zombie tourism. Various studies have chronicled tourists’ fascination with cadavers, and with touring the purported haunts of the undead (c.f. Light 2009; Linke 2005; Stone 2011a), yet the ways in which new death-oriented leisure zones not only arise but become fetishized remain understudied. This chapter responds to the recent call for new research on the relationship between the media and dark tourism sites (Stone 2011b:327). Data derived from fieldwork in the Toraja highlands of Indonesia and web-based sources demonstrate the role of both the internet and the anthropological imagination in this process. A second theme in this chapter entails examining the often-contradictory emotional dynamics underlying the pursuit of fun and fright by vacationers. Ethnographic studies of the complex emotional terrain entailed in these first-hand encounters remain limited and this chapter contribute to our understanding of the emotional dynamics embodied in touristic pilgrimages to observe the mortuary rituals of another culture. FInally, although this chapter examines the Western voyeuristic fascination with dead (and potentially undead) corpses, my aim is not to fuel sensationalized imagery of another dark place where dark activities are seemingly a part of everyday life. Nancy Scheper-Hughes and Philippe Bourgois’ cautions regarding ‘pornographies of violence’ as captivating yet repelling chronicles of violence that circumvent critical analysis strike me as equally apt for discussions of this particular genre of dark tourism (Scheper-Hughes and Bourgois 2003:1). What I term ‘pornographies of the macabre,’ like pornographies of violence, can reify stigmatized perceptions of subordinated peoples while neglecting to spotlight the “chains of causality…link[ing] structural, political, and symbolic violence…buttress[ing] unequal power relations” (Bourgois 2003:433). Thus, this chapter also examines the cultural “logic” and structural, political and symbolic asymmetries that buttress outsiders’ sensationalized zombie-themed references to Toraja mortuary traditions, references that have lent the Toraja a new kind of global notoriety.

Purpose-The purpose of this paper is to investigate the prospects of Belfast as a Tourism City with a special focus on dark (troubles) tourism. Design/methodology/approach-This paper uses two surveysone for overseas-based potential tourists and one for Northern Ireland residents; one focus group with potential tourists; and three interviews, one with a Belfast MP and two with tour-guide operators, one from each side of the Northern Ireland divide. This paper is less theoretical than exploratory. Findings-Generally, there is strong and widespread support for the concept of troubles tourism. Stakeholders must ensure that troubles tourism is intelligently and sensitively handled and builds up communities. Originality/value-This is a relatively new and under-researched area. Belfast has been rarely looked at in urban-tourism studies. Findings have applicability for other post-conflict and divided countries, such as the countries of the former Yugoslavia.

Although relatively recent, the concepts of ‘dark tourism’, ‘difficult heritage tourism’ and ‘Holocaust tourism’ have already been approached from historical, cultural, sociological, anthropological and managerial perspectives. The article offers a philosophical inquiry of ‘dark attractions’, inspired by Deleuze and Guattari’s work on aesthetics, with an aim of divorcing the term ‘dark tourism’ from its typically negative valance. It makes use of a synaesthetic understanding of experience and relies on an enlarged idea of perception conceptualised as a dynamic continuity between bodily/affective and intellectual cognitive faculties that are activated in the vibrant interaction with the architectural landscape of the ‘dark site’. The emphasis on immediate perception necessarily implies formulation of a concept of ‘affective aesthetics’ which refers to bodily process, a vital movement that triggers the subject’s passionate becoming-other, where ‘becoming’ stands for an intensive flow of affective (micro)perceptions. Such an approach sheds a different light on ‘Holocaust tourism’ and the ‘pleasures’ associated therewith, especially because it provides an explanation to a situation (common at many Holocaust memorials) when visitors are pleased, or positively affected, with representation/image/expression of sadness/atrocity. The synaesthetic operations of ‘dark attractions’ will be briefly illustrated with an example of the Holocaust memory site in Bełżec, Poland.

heritage?, that is, is there a dark heritage?,
Is there a heritage that arouses 'the negative': pain,
grief, death, morbidity, traumatic memory, etc.?, and if
there is that hidden face of our past who longs for it
and who visits it…, or who consumes it? In other words
What is the dark side of tourism? (see text
introduction to Navajas Corral and Rodríguez Achútegui,
pp. 132-133).

This article explores the interpretative, managerial, and ethical issues present in dark tourism, namely ghost tours. Accordingly, a comparative case study of ghost tours in Edinburgh, Scotland, and Toledo, Spain, was conducted utilizing key informant interviews and participant observation. Because the academic literature on ghost tours is rather limited, this study presents unique findings in relation to managerial perspec- tives on issues of ethics, interpretation, and operations in ghost tours as a dark tourism activity. It also provides observational evidence on these aspects by means of partici- pant observation in ghost tours. The study concludes with a note to possible future studies.

Dark tourism has been recognised as a distinctive tourism phenomenon of the twenty-first century, with increasingly significant numbers of visitors and tourists going to dark tourism attractions and sites, new dark tourism products and attractions emerging, and modern global communication media generating interest in dark tourism attractions, while at the same time affecting the image of destinations. The phenomenon of dark tourism has been examined in academia from the mid-1990s; however, it remains one of the less developed areas of tourism and leisure research. Not surprisingly, knowledge of the experiences of visitors and tourists at dark tourism attractions and sites is both theoretically fragile and limited.
In redressing this omission in tourism and leisure research, this study examines the effect of enduring involvement and socio-demographic variables on visitor experiences and benefits gained at a contemporary dark tourism site. The focus of the study is the April 3rd Peace Park on Jeju Island, South Korea, a site commemorating and memorialising one of the most destructive episodes in modern Korean history. In doing so, the study developed a theoretical framework for understanding visitor experiences at dark tourism sites, using a benefits-based approach along with the concept of enduring involvement. This approach provides a framework for comprehending visitors‘ dark tourism experiences by identifying reasons for visit, on-site experiences, and benefits gained from these experiences. Enduring involvement is applied to investigate the effect of a visitor‘s ‗personal connection‘ to the tragic event when it comes to their experiences at the site.
The April 3rd Peace Park on Jeju Island commemorates a violent political conflict, which began on April 3rd in 1948, and resulted in 30,000 of the inhabitants dead or missing. The park was inaugurated in 2008 for the purposes of education, commemoration, and reconciliation within the Jeju community, in which the family and relatives of both victims and perpetrators still live. The research employs qualitative and quantitative research methods to explore visitor experiences. In its qualitative component, 46 semi-structured interviews were conducted between September and October 2008 in order to identify reasons for visit, the cognitive and affective on-site experiences of visitors and the benefits gained from their visit. This data was utilised in the construction of a site-specific questionnaire. In the quantitative component, self-administered questionnaires and face-to-face interviews were conducted from June 23 to July 31, 2009. A total of 407 valid questionnaires, out of 450 distributed, were utilised to test 16 hypotheses derived from the theoretical framework.
The results indicate that a benefits-based approach was effective in exploring visitors‘ dark tourism experiences. With this approach, a sense of obligation or personal duty was identified as one of the key reasons for visiting the site. Emotional experiences were also found to be important, and likely to lead to the visitors‘ benefits gained. However, results also indicate a benefits-based approach was not effective for segmentation of visitors. In relation to enduring involvement, visitor experiences and benefits gained from experiencing the site and its history were found to differ significantly based on visitors‘ level of enduring involvement. High involvement visitors were more likely to recall actual memories of the April 3rd incident, as opposed to acquiring knowledge of it or related issues at the site itself, in stark contrast with low involvement visitors. These differences in visitor experiences and benefits gained were due therefore to visitors‘ prior knowledge of and familiarity with the incident. The results of the study also indicate that high involvement visitors are more likely to be elderly, to reside locally, to be connected to the incident, or to have higher levels of education. Low involvement visitors on the other hand are more likely to be young, non-local, and with generally lower levels of education.
The study concludes that an effective way of understanding dark tourism experiences from a theoretical perspective is to apply both a benefits-based approach and the concept of enduring involvement.

There are many things to do apart from parties, I mean people are changing from the basic thought process of going to a family occasion and parties are no more fun for these generations. Now people want something proximity to death and atrocity than here is the thing which attracts people who have love towards adventures and wants them to involve in risk and that is dark tourism. The most popular types of tourism are Religious tourism, Wildlife tourism, Cultural tourism, Recreational tourism, Educational tourism and so on, but dark tourism deals with totally different criteria such as darkness, emotions, and effective experiences with the places connected to death, disaster, or atrocities which actually makes dark tourism different from any other type of tourism.  The main attraction to the locations which are linked with dark tourism is their historical value rather than their associations with death and suffering.

After the initiatives to implement tourist activity in places related to the Portuguese colonial and post-colonial periods, this article emphasizes the need to serve multiple narratives of the events and circumstances that led to these places being tourist attractions. So, the article describes the process of going from a single narrative of Portugal as colonizer-Lusotropicalism-to the multiplicity of narratives that exist today, originating from Portugal and its former colonies. Afterwards, the article demonstrates the potential of dark tourism, particularly of its attractions, as privileged means for the transmission of multiple messages, as each attraction is open to several interpretations. Finally, it concludes with the need for the CPLP countries to make joint decisions about the narratives conveyed by the attractions and to undertake case studies focused on specific aspects of the attractions.

This literature review is conducted to find methods on how to gain benefits of dark tourism for the growth of the SriLankan tourism sector. This review also aims on finding ways to improve the tourism industry in SriLankan Context using methodology od descriptive analysis from secondary resources such as empirical and theoretical articles consisting of journals, newspapers, websites, books and blogs. The independent variables used in this review were the real and disastrous sites experienced by the society and the atrocities of genocide. There was a direct relationship between the dependent variable of dark tourism and the identified independent variables.
The review was focused on SriLankan context for easy contractions. This review can be aided for future and present generation researchers as they could understand how this sb sector under tourism can help the growth of the economy. Nevertheless, the tourism sector in srilanka has not taken the maximum effort in this new trend that would potentially increase the contribution of the tourism sector to gross domestic product of the country.
The policy makers, shareholders, and businesses in relation with the development of the tourism sector in SriLanka could be made aware of the development of the tourism industry via this new trend of dark tourism

This article provides an analysis of the relation between tourists' experiences, affect, and bodily perceptions, together with processes of remembering and forgetting, focusing on (dark) touristic practices in haunted places in contemporary Japan. It highlights the social features of oblivion, processes in the creation of memories and discourses of war, and their entanglement in the "meshwork" that constitutes a particular place. I draw on ethnographic data of a guided ghost tour that visits Kiyotaki Tunnel, one of the most renowned haunted places in Kyoto. I describe tourists' experiences, analyze the rumors about the haunting, and show that, among the locals, memories of the death of and discrimination against Korean laborers in the tunnel were strategically forgotten. Yet, these memories were "unearthed," appropriated and spread on the internet by visitors, attracted by the haunting. I point out that haunted places emerge as "affective meshworks" primarily as a result of bodily correspondences with affordances in the environment, rather than from narrative and belief, and that (dark) touristic practices can contribute to the construction of new discourses, thus unsettling power relationships. I argue that a focus on affect in shaping meshworks of bodies, environments, memories, and discourses through (dark) touristic practices, can provide an understanding of the experiences of visitors to places related to war and death, and that visitors contribute to the construction of new memories and discourses.

The Indian Residential School (IRS) system in Canada directly affected 150,000 Indigenous children who were taken to state-sponsored and church-run institutions to separate them from their families and cultures. During the century and a half leading up to around 1970, over 130 IRS were scattered throughout the country. The role of architecture in this genocidal system is a crucial, but overlooked aspect of its realization. In the first decades of the twentieth century, the Canadian government became increasingly involved in building and rebuilding the IRS, as a dedicated arm of the Department of Indian Affairs in Ottawa became a centrally controlled apparatus of architectural production. Passing from utopian space to evolving memory, the architectural remnants of the IRS system tell many stories, which are among those that need to be heard and acknowledged by contemporary Canadian society as part of its troubled relationship with Indigenous peoples. Through archival research, documentation, narrative, and critical analysis, explorations of four former IRS sites configure this thesis, each providing a lens on the space and memory of this difficult and often traumatic past. Located in Ontario and Manitoba, they were designed, fully or in part, by the little-known R.G. (Roland Guerney) Orr, Chief Architect of Indian Affairs from 1921 to 1935. Mapping architecture to ideology, I examine the development of the Mohawk Institute in Brantford, Ontario in the legal and political contexts of Indigenous-Canadian relations. At the abandoned Birtle IRS in southwestern Manitoba, the institutional intricacies of this broad view come into focus through a critique of the architectural program and its intentions. Nearby, at the site of the demolished Brandon IRS, the heap of leftover debris calls forth questions of collective memory, explored through conventional representations and their transformations in the art of survivors and post-residential school Indigenous artists. I consider the archive and its role in bringing forth the future at the former Shingwauk Hall in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, now the site of Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig, an Anishinaabe post-secondary institution, and Algoma University. Finally, I return to the Woodland Cultural Centre, located next to the Mohawk Institute building and whose staff are currently reimagining the former IRS based on feedback from the community. Rather than resting on conclusions, this thesis probes these difficult histories as an opening up towards the future, propelled by the past but open to spaces of divergence.
