Definition Coastal boundaries delimit a geographical space and are defined by the distances of one or more areas on the coast, the sea or on its interface, on the order of a few hundred meters to many kilometers, average. Coastal boundaries can also extend and go inland by land, from the interior of the watersheds to the limit of a national jurisdiction into the sea. Most criteria for establishing coastal boundaries depend on several factors such as the set of specific problems, the uses of the territory, or the physical and geographical aspects that are relevant to each stretch of coast. Within it, the interaction between sea, land, and atmosphere is produced differently by the occurrence and direct effect of natural events or processes of anthropic origin. Inside coastal boundaries, exclusive forms of fragile ecosystems will be developed, and specific economic, social, and cultural relations are present. Sometimes, because of the complexity and drastic changes that occur in this space, coastal boundaries need to be systematically monitored to favor proper planning and supervision of the coastal marine space and its integrated management. When establishing limits in coastal municipalities , special attention should be paid to the local social component that interacts with the coastal resources.

In the present chapter, a critical review about various methodological frameworks used for establishing coastal risks is carried out. The following five aspects were taken into account for the analysis: (1) kinds of actual risks; (2) disciplinary approaches about risks; (3) relationship among coastal risk–menace–vulnerability; (4) current tools for
coastal risk assessment; and (5) coastal risk management. Coastal Risk is defined as the ecological, social, economical, functional, and cultural damages possibly caused to coastal areas due to their geographical location. The risk is conditioned by two components: kind of menace and vulnerability. For that reason, coastal risk means that the coastal area is exposed to the possibility of loss. To know the risks a specific coastal area is exposed to, the possible consequences of a natural or anthropic event impact, and the probabilities of some kind of danger or threat to that area, have to be previously assessed

Wave properties are important influencer to tune the beach profile. And also beach profile controls the wave nature such as breaker type. Both wave properties and beach longitudinal profile organize each other through a balance. The said research paper is traced this incidents with evidence in Digha coastal beach. Through this paper, longitudinal beach profile and breaker type and their relationship have been sketched. To analyse the breaker type several parameters have been used, viz. beach slope (β), depth of water (d), wave period (T), Breaker height (H b) and time between two successive waves (Δt). Breaker type configurations may vary between offshore (B 0) and onshore (B b) beach platform. Offshore breaker type is important for beach surfing zone.

Development of rural livelihood is the process of sustainable growth of rural economy. Improvement of rural people may have various dimensions, but in Bangladesh, it particularly indicates the development of agriculture sector, which is believed to be the main source of ensuring food security and reducing poverty. Here, rice cultivation has been the backbone of agriculture since its birth, but unfortunately the cultivators in coastal areas are now losing their interest due to less profit made from it and for the worldwide augmented demand of prawns. Therefore, this study has been conducted for assimilating rice and prawn cultivation, describing the complete procedures of production and project mechanism of the 'Integrated Rice-Fish-Prawn-Vegetable Culture' or 'Gher Farming' system. The suitability of 'Gher Farming' in context of coastal areas of Bangladesh has been analyzed using pentagon model for The Sustainable Livelihoods Framework. Simultaneously, the study focuses on the significance of this integrated system upon accelerating rural economy. The target group of the study is the local inhabitants of a village in Jessore district of Bangladesh and non-local people from the capital Dhaka. By quantifying their satisfaction level, the study has intended to establish relationship between them. Finally, the outcome of the study shows that, this integrated farming is facing problems due to lack of organizational and financial support, poor supply of larvae, lack of technical knowledge and higher loss. Based on these findings, some general recommendations have been provided to make this system a sustainable one.

(Litopenaeus vannamei). Penilaian terhadap budidaya yang dilakukan masih belum
memenuhi kaidah dari prinsip prinsip silvofishery. Intervensi teknologi silvofishery
dilakukan untuk untuk transfer pengetahuan kepada kelompok masyarakat
pengelola mangrove dalam kegiatan pemanfaatan mangrove dengan sistem
silvofishery. Penelitian dilakukan pada Agustus-Desember 2018. Model
silvofishery yang diterapkan dengan menggunakan model empang parit. Komoditas
yang dibudidayakan adalah kepiting bakau (Scylla serrata). Hasil penelitian
menunjukkan adanya respon positif dari masyarakat dalam menerapkan teknologi
yang diintervensikan.

The multidimensional impacts of climate change necessitate participation of large scale organizations in the management of vulnerability to climate change. Operating at multiple levels of governance, these organizations help manage the deleterious effects of changing climate for different sectors of human-environment systems. How they frame vulnerability, what influences their framings, why are their framings aligned or misaligned: while these are critical questions for managing vulnerability, they are often overlooked in the literature. By ‘framing’ we mean how actors understand and evaluate key factors of vulnerability. Through a case study in Bangladesh, we analyze how vulnerability is framed by the leading organizations across five sectors and three levels of governance. Drawing from key-informant interviews, we developed a spatial multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) approach and identified vulnerability hotspots. With few variations, our study reveals that the framings of vulnerability are mostly aligned across scale irrespective at which stakeholders are operating. Collectively, proximity to river/sea along with poverty, schooling, cropping intensity, soil salinity, and availability of multipurpose disaster shelters are identified as key determinants of vulnerability by all organizations. They prioritize infrastructural and agricultural development as basis for vulnerability management. We argue that similarity of the understanding of vulnerability across scale would facilitate adaptation decision-making process. However, less focus on socio-economic criteria can undermine the success of adaptation initiatives. While the findings of this study can assist the decision-makers of Bangladesh in coastal vulnerability management, the methodological approach should be useful to assess coastal vulnerability in other parts of the world as well.

In the wake of the burgeoning population, socio-economic and environmental issues facing coastal areas, LULC change detection has become an essential tool for environmental monitoring towards achieving sustainable development. In this study, an object-based image analysis approach using post-classification comparison technique was applied for assessing the LULC of the coastal city of Lagos from 1986 to 2016. The study describes how satellite imagery from different sources (Landsat and SENTINEL 2A) can be successfully integrated for Land use Land cover change detection. The results show that between 1986 and 2016, there were net increases in bare areas, built-up areas, and shrublands and a general decline in forestlands, waterbodies and wetlands. Over 60,000ha cover (approx. 190% increase) was converted into built-up areas while 83,541ha (835.4km 2 ) of forestland were lost, suggesting high rates of urbanization and corresponding deforestation. This is the Sri Lankan paper presented by Justice Saleem Marsoof PC, Judge of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka, entitled “The Natural Capital & the Rule of Law – A Sri Lankan Perspective” at the Second Asian Judges Symposium on Natural Capital and the Rule of Law held in Manila, Philippines, in December 2013.  In this brief paper, after a brief introduction, Justice Marsoof discusses the importance of the Sri Lankan coast and ecosystem, particularly, as a defence against natural disasters, and goes on to shed light on the existing Sri Lankan legal infrastructure, before examining the role played by the Sri Lankan Judiciary at various levels in ensuring compliance by the relevant authorities of their obligations with respect to the conservation, management and protection of the Sri Lankan coast and ecosystems and its natural capital in general.

Small-scale fisheries in the Mediterranean represent a significant part of the fisheries industry and their substantial social, economic and place attachment related role has always been acknowledged in the region. Despite the fact that this usually family-based endeavor has a vast economic impact on coastal and island communities of the sea-basin, data and insights on the Mediterranean artisanal fisheries continue to be inadequately developed and poorly integrated in the local development strategies. A recent walk at a local beach revealed to me how fast coastal erosion is affecting local communities. This area where I live is essentially a peninsula with two large popular beaches, Donabate beach and Portrane beach which are joined by cliffs, on the coast of north County Dublin, Ireland. I have already written about erosion at Donabate beach and erosion at the cliffs over the years but, in a far worse condition, is Portrane beach. As can be seen from photos I took in 2013 compared with the ones I took a few days ago, coastal erosion is happening at a significant rate.
