Classical Iconography

Cette étude s'intéresse à la manière dont les costumes des satyres sont représentés en images, depuis la représentation des drames satyriques athéniens (à partir du vase de Pronomos) jusqu'aux figurations romaines de "coulisses" théâtrales dans lesquels des personnages dionysiaques tombent le masque (autour de la mégalographie de la Villa des Mystères et de la mosaïque de la Maison du Poète Tragique). Plus que des indices sur les costumes effectifs revêtus par des acteurs (en particulier à Rome où il n'y a pas de drame satyrique), ces dispositifs mettent en évidence l'actualisation idéale de la performance théâtrale.

Mijn onderzoek kan gezien worden als een inventarisatie van een klassiek motief, namelijk de riviergod, door de eeuwen heen. Middels deze inventarisatie poog ik de ontwikkeling van de vorm en functie van de riviergod in kaart te kunnen brengen, met een nadruk op de toepassing ervan in de zestiende-eeuwse Italiaanse kunst.

This paper investigates the literary tradition and the iconography of the Trojan Horse. In particular, I was interested in the presence of the wheels. Depending on the versions of the story, they were already present in Epeius' work or the Trojans themselves added them later (cf. Vergil). Particularly important is the transition from the representation of the wheels directly applied to the legs to the placement of the Horse on a sort of four-wheeled mobile pedestal, whose oldest attestation is probably the statue placed on the Acropolis and signed by Strongylion. Later the Roman tradition will choose this iconography to represent the Horse entrance to the city.

The relationship between iconography and currency production in Greece depends on mechanisms of production of state objects. Collective memory is invoked through the issue of coins, as new political regimes emerge. Hence, coins carry not only economic but also sociopolitical values. The publication of coins in the Government Gazette offers a glimpse of the involvement of the state in coin production. The entanglement between people and coins is based on the ability of the latter to exercise social agency and generate relationships of mutual dependence. In this regard, coins constitute a means of naturalization of the Greek national narrative through their materiality, and their iconography conveys a political concern to create trustworthy currency. The persistent selection of classical Greek designs for twentieth-century coins and the conservative iconographic expansion after the 1960s demonstrate the national identification of these designs as agents of social and political interconnections that had acquired the authoritative status to create the necessary trust in the coins themselves.

We find in the Baetic town of Italica four statues of the goddes Diana, the most frequent among
the gods in Italica statuary. Three of them come from public monumental places: the terrace
over the theatre and «Los Palacios» complex, perhaps from the public baths. We reject their religious
function, unattested by any other documents. Considering their common date, we think
they are related with the monumentalization of the town in the age of Hadrian, partially supported
by the local dirigents. With the preference by a goddes who refers to one of Hadrian’s favourite
fondness, the hunt, local élite shows its affection to imperial ideology.

We present three fragmentary domestic statuettes, from the archaeological excavations in the Plaza de la Encarnación, Sevilla. All of them were found in recovery levels or reused in non-original contexts. The first one is a 12 cm high hermes
made of giallo antico, which corresponds to the type of “Macedonian Kings”, with several parallels in Hispania and beyond. The second sculpture is a torso of Venus Pudica of white marble, reduced to the belly and hip area, with only 13
cm of preserved height. It is datable to the middle second century AD. The way in wich the mantle is held with the left hand refers to iconographic models as the Aphrodite of Rhodes. Finally the third piece is a larger figure, the torso of a seated child (almost 50 cm high preserved). Regarding to its stressed rotational movement and the unstable position of the legs, it remembers very closely other figures of children and Eros, usually decorating fountains, notably the iconography of fisher Eros. The piece is dated to the late first century AD.

Partiendo de dos estatuillas poco conocidas de Hércules niño, ambas de la Bética, se estudian las representaciones infantiles de dioses clásicos conservadas en Hispania. Se analizan sus connotaciones religiosas, la "divinización" de niños humanos con fines de exaltación honorífica o post-mortem y el uso preferente de estas figuras en la decoración privada.

El libro constituye el resultado final de una larga investigación que ha formado parte del Proyecto Tusculum que dirige la Escuela Española de Historia y Arqueología en Roma (CSIC) desde 1994. En sus más de mil páginas se han reunido todas las piezas escultóricas –de las que se tiene noticia– que una vez pertenecieron al área del ager tusculano. La primera parte del libro, compuesta de dos capítulos, presenta, en el primero de ellos, la historia general de los principales hallazgos escultóricos y el recorrido de las piezas por el mundo del coleccionismo.
El resultado de esta parte ha sido la configuración de un mapa de estatuaria tusculana que se puede adjetivar de mundial, ya que las piezas se custodian en más de cuarenta museos y colecciones, desde Rusia hasta Estados Unidos, pasando por casi todos los países europeos.
En el segundo capítulo se analizan los contextos arqueológicos e históricos a los que pertenecieron las piezas originalmente, lo que ha permitido una reflexión sobre la sociedad e ideología –en sus diferentes
fases– del Tusculano antiguo. Se han examinado problemas relativos a los programas iconográficos del área urbana pública (foro y teatro), así
como los de la decoración escultórica de las villae del entorno. La segunda parte del libro constituye el Catálogo, compuesto por más de trescientas piezas, algunas conocidas de antiguo, otras completamente inéditas y finalmente unas cuantas en paradero actual desconocido.
Existe una gran variedad temática repartida entre Escultura Ideal, Retratos, relieves y otras piezas de carácter ornamental. Se analizan, en esta parte, los problemas específicos de cada una de las piezas, tanto los de carácter historiográfico, como los derivados de su análisis iconográfico y formal.

Resumen. El objetivo de este estudio radica en el análisis de los tipos monetales armamentísticos de las monedas de Magna Grecia y Sicilia entre los siglos V-III a. C.) buscando una interpretación a su iconografía y mensaje. Los tipos monetales de temática militar son muy frecuentes en la numismática helena y con esta investigación se pretende localizar el mensaje lanzado e interpretado por las sociedades antiguas a través suyo. Para ello la metodología seguida ha sido analizar las emisiones realizadas en estas áreas geográficas antes de la invasión romana, contrastando la frecuencia de las representaciones en cada tipo de moneda y valor. Así es como se han podido extraer las razones de la elección de las representaciones y la importancia del tipo de mensaje expedido en virtud del valor de la moneda sobre la que se hacía.

Estudaremos aspectos do percurso da narrativa mitológica do conflito entre Apolo e Mársias, cuja história inicia com a invenção do aulós pela deusa Atena, trazendo a lume, ao mesmo tempo, a querela que opunha este instru-mento, associado com frequência ao universo dionisíaco, à lýra, vinculada por uma tradição cultural hegemônica ao universo apolínio. Não se trata de um contexto simples de relações culturais, mas de trilhas labirínticas percor-ridas pelo fluxo de tradições orais, visuais e literárias, por meio das quais as significações impregnadas nos esquemas de transmissão e comunicação nos remetem a significados culturais os mais importantes da Antiguidade, que tangenciam um nível magmático da cultura, quase estrutural no sentido de Lévi-Strauss. Interessa-nos apontar a diversidade de abordagens do mito, sobretudo em suas representações iconográficas, procurando interpretar as variações de enfoque e prestando atenção, ao mesmo tempo, aos traslados geográficos e aos contínuos cronológicos.

This paper analyses what image of the female condition show the representations of goddesses known by the Hispano-Romans, focusing on the sculptures. Although their powers and devotees hardly characterize them as gender goddesses in the proper sense, their iconography set to the most common classical models presents a stereotypical image that responds to the topics about how must a woman be and behave, according to the most widespread mentality in the Roman Empire.
