Carreira da Índia

O "Naufrágio do galeão grande São João" é o primeiro relato da História Trágico-Marítima, publicada em 1735, e do desastre ocorrido em 1552. O relato conhecido como "Naufrágio de Sepúlveda" é o mais famoso entre todos os relatos de naufrágios. Contudo, devido à existência de um manuscrito e de diversas edições, o que conhecemos é resultado de várias alterações ao longo do tempo. Neste trabalho, através da análise comparativa do manuscrito e de sete versões publicadas, tenciona-se esclarecer como a narrativa foi modificada ao longo das edições.

O período da expansão portuguesa que estas notas cobrem inicia-se com a tomada de Ceuta e termina em 1580 com a batalha de Alcácer-Quibir.
O que se encontrará abaixo é o resultado da pesquiza que efetuámos sobre quem, naquele período, foi ao norte de África e participou na carreia da India, pois não tivemos sucesso quando procuramos a indicação de leirienses que foram a outros pontos que a expansão portuguesa tocou, como por exemplo o Brasil. Devemos referir que muitos dos nomes que encontramos apontavam para “pessoas de condição” e neste caso fácil foi determinar a sua naturalidade. No entanto, os documentos mal referem os “homens de menor estado” e quando o fazem não indicam a naturalidade. Igualmente os padres e os membros das Ordens que acompanharam a expansão raramente tem a indicação da naturalidade, pelo que só com o cruzamento com informação constante das crónicas das respetivas Ordens premir-nos-á saber de onde são naturais: mas não o fizemos porque a existência de inúmeros nomes semelhantes levou-nos a concluir que não seria credível a informação assim obtida.  Mesmo com estas limitações, publicamos estas notas pois poderão motivar a que se venham melhorar, pois a escrita da história deve conservar o gosto do inacabado.
As imagens que “decoram” este trabalho foram retiradas do chamado “Livro das Armadas” da Academia das Ciências de Lisboa, que com o “Livro das Armadas” de Lizuarte de Abreu, tem por caraterística a figuração cuidadosa das naus de cada armada que foram à Índia até 1566, e até 1563, respetivamente.

The present thesis Shipwrecks of the “Carreira da Índia” (1595-1623) – Sources
for the Study in Portuguese Maritime History deals with factors which caused losses of
ships of the Carreira da Índia which linked the European metropolis Lisbon with its
Goa based Estado da Índia between 1595 and 1623. Although Portuguese-Asiatic
shipping was formally separated from the Habsburg Empire during the Union of the
Two Iberian Crowns (1580-1640), the European policies of the Spanish Kings,
especially towards the United Provinces and the Netherlands had its influence and
effects on the Portuguese side.
Shipwrecks, either on the outward bound or homeward bound voyages had
occurred for various reasons since the early days of the Carreira da Índia yet the
emergence of the two private European Companies, the Dutch United East India
Company (founded in 1602) and the British East India Company (founded in 1600)
were a new momentum by which’s characteristics of concurrence and struggle for
supremacy of the European-Asiatic spice trade, losses of Portuguese ships were caused
by planned and executed military operations as well.
Focusing on the geographical region of the Mozambique Channel in which the
losses have taken place, the thesis combines a historiographical approach with records
of underwater archaeology analyzing questions related to the political environment and
planed military operations in which shipwrecks have occurred as well as causes of
shipwrecks observing ship building and design modifications and effects related to
economic patterns such as the monetary flows of the Portuguese outward bound
shipping during the period of observation.

Naufragios da Careira da Índia (1595-1623)

This article analyses French privateering in relation with the carreira da Índia, in the first half of the sixteenth-century. Deriving its argument from a wide array of differing sources, it is shown that Portuguese vessels sailing from India were a primary target for the French, in a scope not always fully grasped by traditional historiography. In fact, long before the 1580s, Portuguese ships loaded with spices faced an organized network of enemies, which acted on intelligence collected by espionage networks operating within Portugal.

From an early stage of carreira da Índia route, slaves embarked in the ships which performed the return voyage. It remains to be determined an exact figure, as well as how often did the slaves went on this voyage. They usually came from China, India and other parts of Asia, Mozambique, Angola and Cape Verde. Most of them did not make it to Lisbon, as they were used in several illegal acts of trafficking and smuggling along the way, thus being mostly traded in the Azores, off the Portuguese coast, or even in Brazil and Galicia. Since mid-sixteenth century, at least, hundreds had been shipped: the sources record a single ship in which the total number of slaves amounted to 300. Despite Crown's policies aimed at putting a stop to illegal activities and slaves' mass transportation, the problem resurfaced throughout this period, even if it seems to have caused greater concern in early-seventeenth century.

The wreck site of the Portuguese ship Espadarte (1558) was discovered on the 30th of May 2001. The assessment of the site revealed that there was a number of Chinese porcelain artefacts within the archaeological context and the decision was made to excavate it. After the removal of approximately 80 tons of ballast; the collection of porcelain items (from the Ming Dynasty, all Jingdezhen ware) reached almost 2,000 pieces that were either intact or nearly intact.

O que têm em comum Manuel Gomes de Elvas, o escravo que se tornou fidalgo, Francisca Coronel, a freira insubmissa encarcerada no convento, Luís Gomes da Mata, o correio-mor e Anne Armande du Verger, a espia francesa, amante do rei D. Pedro II e avó do primeiro duque de Lafões, Pedro Henrique de Bragança?
São todos membros de uma família cuja história é aqui relatada. Nela se incluem alguns episódios surpreendentes da história de Portugal: desde a peculiar obsessão do herdeiro da coroa, D. Sebastião, que o levou ao desastre de Alcácer-Quibir até ao fascínio da família real pelos autos de fé, passando pelos amores licenciosos nos conventos e os horrores da Inquisição – e, como pano de fundo, os esforços e o engenho de uma família que conseguiu sobreviver aos tumultos da nossa história.
Assente em factos verdadeiros, numa investigação que levou a autora aos Arquivos Secretos do Vaticano e a outros arquivos nacionais e internacionais, o livro acompanha diversos momentos marcantes da história de Portugal, como a batalha de Alcácer-Quibir e as suas funestas consequências, a dominação filipina que se lhe seguiu, a ação persecutória do Santo Ofício, as invasões francesas e as guerras liberais.

Although it is little recognized and studied, the presence of women on board the Carreira da India was a reality. We aim to carry on the research on the topic, analysing aspects of the everyday life and the difficulties faced by women who travelled to and back from India during the 16th century. We will emphasize the first women who sailed East, the thought men had about women at the time, the searches done on ships, as well as aspects related to sexual life and weddings on board.

Em finais do século XVI, devido a obras de fortificação, os canais de navegação da barra do rio Tejo começaram a assorear, a estreitar e a apresentar uma profundidade menor, afetando fortemente a navegação, sobretudo dos navios da carreira da Índia, caracterizados pelas suas grandes dimensões. O maior problema verificou-se na carreira de
São Gião (São Julião), que é o canal Norte de navegação e o principal para os navios que se deslocavam para Lisboa, ficando mais sujeito a ser palco de encalhes e de naufrágios. Este estudo pretende contribuir para a discussão destes assuntos, tentando ao mesmo tempo compreender quando é que a carreira da Alcáçova, o canal Sul, terá começado a ser usada pela navegação para se entrar no Tejo e em que condições.

In late sixteenth century, due to fortification works, the navigation channels of the Tagus river rill began to silt, to narrow and to present a smaller depth, strongly affecting the shipping, especially carreira da India’s ships, themselves characterized by its large dimensions. The largest concern was the carreira de São Gião (São Julião), the northern
navigation channel, and the most important one for vessels on their way to Lisbon, which became more susceptible of being the stage of beaching and shipwrecks. This study aims to contribute to the discussion of these subjects, while attempting, at the same time, to
understand when the carreira de Alcáçova, in the South channel, started being used by navigation to enter the Tagus river, and under which conditions.

Este artigo procura analisar as condições de manutenção dos impérios coloniais nos séculos XVI e XVII, apresentando uma visão panorâmica das disputas internacionais pelo controle da rota do Atlântico. É objetivo desse trabalho investigar as ações estratégico-militares, visando preservar a hegemonia portuguesa sobre a rota Atlântica e sua importância político-econômica para a expansão colonial.

This article deals with the presence of physicians, surgeons and  apothecaries in the early modern Portuguese empire and the dissemination of medical knowledge there. In Portugal itself, the health care sector had been the target of considerable royal interference since the final years of the fifteenth century, during the construction of the early modern state. Regulatory frameworks were established to harmonise health care practice throughout the country and to control the organisation and distribution of the available health care
practitioners among local communities. As this was also the time when Portugal was investing heavily in its colonies, how were these policies reflected in the empire? Did health care feature in the Portuguese
government’s colonial strategies? How did the official policy to send medical personnel overseas work on the ground? Did it operate at a large enough scale to transform local practices?

Durante a primeira metade do Séc. XVI, os carregamentos de especiarias das naus que regressa-vam a Portugal eram pagos principalmente com mercadorias (predominantemente cobre e prata alemã) e com o ouro trazido das minas portuguesas da África Ocidental e amoedado em Lisboa. Durante a segunda metade do século, esta prática mudou e o ouro foi praticamente substituído por prata, a qual já não era de origem europeia, mas americana, das Índias Ocidentais de Castela. Paralelamente ao influxo de reales espanhóis cunhados nas Américas, nos finais do Séc. XVI e princípios do Séc. XVII, a Europa começou a desenvolver um gosto por outros produtos orientais como a seda, porcelanas e chá, bens que resultaram do desenvolvimento do comércio em larga escala entre portugueses e chineses através de Macau, e sempre pago com prata. Os portugueses foram os primeiros a tentar introduzir os reales castelhanos na rota do comércio com o Extremo Oriente, o que conseguiram desviando o curso da prata americana para o porto dos Açores e de Lisboa.

Resumo: Na primeira parte desta tese são identificados e analisados os problemas associados à navegação da carreira da Índia no trajecto entre os Açores e Lisboa, se bem que estando integrados numa problemática mais geral da rota global e das próprias relações políticas e económicas de Portugal com outros reinos europeus. Não esquecendo as debilidades da construção naval, a degradação estrutural das embarcações e a sua sobrecarga com mercadorias, assim como as condicionantes da vida a bordo dos navios, veremos como esses aspectos pesavam fortemente no sucesso das viagens, tornando ainda mais difícil a chegada a Lisboa. Aos perigos ligados ao decurso da navegação e da própria realidade da geografia física, podendo levar a naufrágios e a encalhes, somava-se o risco de encontro com corsários e piratas, cuja presença entre os Açores e a costa portuguesa revelou-se bastante activa. Outros problemas surgiam com o descaminho e o contrabando de mercadorias, não apenas de especiarias mas também de escravos.
Por sua vez, na segunda parte estudaremos as medidas adoptadas pela Coroa para tentar combater os problemas atrás indicados. Isso passará pela existência de estruturas de apoio à navegação, de um sistema de defesa e de informação, bem como pela promulgação de legislação. Assim, veremos os Açores como local fundamental de escala da carreira da Índia, mas também Cascais a prestar um apoio final inevitável, inclusive através dos pilotos locais. No plano defensivo as armadas da costa e das ilhas tinham um papel basilar, do mesmo modo que a construção de fortificações ajudou a impedir ataques inimigos e beneficiou a protecção que se pretendia dar aos navios que regressavam a Portugal, marcando a paisagem cultural marítima. Para se estabelecer comunicação entre os Açores e Lisboa e manter actualizado o sistema defensivo, havia um sistema de informação em funcionamento baseado no envio de navios de aviso. Algumas das notícias que circulavam vinham directamente do estrangeiro, onde os espiões ao serviço de Portugal iam recolhendo dados sobre o destino das armadas de corsários ou outras que se preparavam para diferentes territórios ultramarinos. Por fim, veremos a promulgação de legislação como forma de tentar evitar o descaminho e o contrabando de mercadorias, assim como outras medidas tomadas de forma extraordinária.

Abstract: In the first part of this thesis, the difficulties associated with the navigation of the carreira da Índia on the route between the Azores and Lisbon are identified and analysed, although these are integrated into a more general problem of the global route and of Portugal's own political and economic relations with other European kingdoms. Without forgetting the weaknesses of shipbuilding, the structural degradation of vessels and the fact of these being often overloaded with merchandise, as well as the constraints of life on board of the ships, we will see how these aspects weighed heavily on the success of the trips, making it even more difficult to arrive to Lisbon. In addition to the dangers linked to the course of navigation and the very reality of physical geography, which could lead to shipwrecks and embankments, there was a risk of encounter with corsairs and pirates, whose presence between the Azores and the Portuguese coast proved to be very active. Other problems arose with the loss and smuggling of goods, not only of spices but also of slaves.
On the second part the focus will be placed on the measures taken by the Crown to try to combat the aforementioned problems. This will involve support structures for shipping, a defense and information system, and the enactment of legislation. Thus, we will see the Azores as a fundamental stopover location of the carreira da Índia, but also Cascais providing an inevitable final support, including through the local navigators. On the defensive level, the coastal and the island's navy forces had played a fundamental role, just as the construction of fortifications helped prevent enemy attacks and benefited the protection that was intended to provide to ships returning to Portugal, determining the maritime cultural landscape. In order to establish communication between the Azores and Lisbon and keep the defense system up to date, there was an information system in place based on sending warning ships. Some of the news that circulated came directly from abroad, where the spies at Portugal's service were collecting data on the fate of the corsairs' navy forces or others that were preparing for different overseas territories. Finally, we will see the enactment of legislation as a way of trying to prevent the loss and smuggling of goods, as well as other extraordinary measures.

In the first half of the sixteenth century, the spice trade between Portugal and India spiked the interest of different European realms, leading to overseas expeditions, thus making Portuguese ships from Asia a very desirable target for privateers and pirates, the French having particularly stood out in this timeframe. To face these perils, and in tandem with the mobilisation of armed forces to protect the Portuguese navigation, an espionage network was put in place in order to gather intelligence that could anticipate French movements, be them in regards to expeditions’ preparation, or naval attacks. In this study, we will delve deeper into the intricacies of this espionage network, so as to attempt to get a better understanding of how Portugal received intelligence that informed oftentimes contrasting policy objectives toward its carefully constructed spice trade route.

A Carreira da Índia. Aspectos e Problemas da Torna-Viagem. (1550-1649) procura lançar algumas luzes sobre uma das etapas da ligação entre Lisboa e o seu Império asiático. Apesar dos muitos trabalhos sobre a Carreira da Índia nunca se abordou de forma individualizada a viagem de regresso. Com os limites temporais escolhidos busca-se a análise de uma época rica em acontecimentos, onde a Carreira da Índia assume um papel central no crescimento do Império a Oriente, mas também na resistência à entrada de novas potências europeias em áreas que os portugueses julgavam suas. Naufrágios, rotas ou a vida a bordo são analisadas na perspectiva do retorno a Portugal, com os navios carregados de riquezas e homens ávidos de chegar a casa. A análise quantitativa e qualitativa permite obter um quadro vivo de uma viagem considerada por muitos como um dos maiores desafios à capacidade humana.
