This article presents the background to and prospects for a new initiative in archaeological field survey and database integration. The Roman Hinterland Project combines data from the Tiber Valley Project, Roman Suburbium Project, and the Pontine Region Project into a single database, which the authors believe to be one of the most complete repositories of data for the hinterland of a major ancient metropolis, covering nearly 2000 years of history. The logic of combining these databases in the context of studying the Roman landscape is explained and illustrated with analyses that show their capacity to contribute to major debates in Roman economy, demography, and the longue durée of the human condition in a globalizing world.

Marijuana is known to have psychotropic effects in humans. In this study, we used rat models of sensorimotor gating, hyperactivity and stereotypy to explore whether CB(1) receptor stimulation or blockade induces behavioral changes consistent with psychotomimetic or antipsychotic agents, respectively. We determined whether (a) the cannabinoid agonist CP 55940 decreased pre-pulse inhibition (PPI) as might be expected from a psychotomimetic agent, and (b) the selective CB(1) receptor antagonist, SR 141716A, had any effect on PPI on its own or following disruptions by psychotomimetic agents. Activation of cannabinoid CB(1) receptor is shown to inhibit marble-burying behavior (MBB), a behavioral model for assessing obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Anandamide, an endogenous agonist at CB(1) receptor also activates the transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1 (TRPV1) channels but at a higher concentration. Furthermore, anandamide-mediated TRPV1 effects are opposite to that of the CB(1) receptor. Therefore, the present study was carried out to investigate the influence of low and high doses of anandamide on MBB in CB(1) and TRPV1 antagonist pre-treated mice. The results revealed that i.c.v. administration of lower doses of anandamide (1-10 μg/mouse) or its analogues (AM404 or URB597; 1-5 μg/mouse) inhibited MBB indicating the anticompulsive activity. Cumulative data indicate that the endocannabinoid system plays a major role in feeding behaviour and energy balance. Genetic silencing of cannabinoid receptor type 1 (CB1) reduces body weight gain, independently of food intake. In this work, we investigated whether hypothalamic neuropeptide expression pattern supports the absence of anorexigenic response observed under constitutive CB1 ablation, by using neuronal CB1 conditional null mice (CamK-CB1-KO) and whole body CB1 null mice (CB1-KO). Our data showed that both CB1 null models display a marked decrease in proopiomelanocortin (POMC) and CART expression in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus (ARC). This evidence suggests that lack of hypophagia is associated with the suppression of ARC anorexigenic neuropeptides and that behavioral changes in food intake (or lack thereof) after constitutive CB1 ablation are likely mediated by impaired melanocortin and CART signaling in the hypothalamus.
