Background Warmblood fragile foal syndrome (WFFS) is a monogenetic defect caused by a recessive lethal missense point mutation in the procollagen‐lysine, 2‐oxoglutarate 5‐dioxygenase 1 gene (PLOD1, c.2032G>A). The majority of homozygous WFFS horses are aborted during gestation. Clinical signs of affected horses include fragile skin, skin and mucosa lacerations, hyperextension of the articulations, and hematomas. In spite of its harmful effect, a relatively high frequency of WFFS carriers has been found in Warmblood horses, suggesting a heterozygote advantage. Background Animal African Trypanosomiasis (AAT) is one of the most economically important diseases affecting livestock productivity in sub-Saharan Africa. The disease is caused by a broad range of Trypanosoma spp., infecting both wild and domesticated animals through cyclical and mechanical transmission. This study aimed to characterize trypanosomes present in cattle at regular intervals over two years in an AAT endemic and a non-endemic region of Ghana. Methodology/Principal findings Groups of cattle at Accra and Adidome were selected based on their geographical location, tsetse fly density, prevalence of trypanosomiasis and the breed of cattle available. Milk from different cattle breeds can present different casein and fat contents, which are reflected in different cheese yields (CY). However, CY is also related to some breed-related molecular characteristics. The aim of the present work was to quantify the effect of these characteristics by comparing a series of Parmigiano Reggiano (PR) cheese-making trials made with milks from Italian Brown (IB) and Italian Friesian (IF) cattle herds. Twelve trials were carried out in a cheese factory in one year (one trial per month), each one consisting of four vats processed in parallel: three vats contained milk from three different IF cattle herds (IF1, IF2 and IF3) and one contained milk from a single IB cattle herd. A 24-h CY prediction formula was developed with data from IF1, IF2 and IF3 trials (calibration) and successively validated by applying it to 12 PR trials made with IF milk in six different cheese factories (external validation). The dual-purpose German Black Pied Cattle (DSN) has become an endangered breed of approximately 2,550 registered cows in Germany. The breed is genetically related to Holstein-Friesian cattle because the old DSN breed contributed to the selection of the modern Holstein dairy cow. In dairy farms, breeders aim to improve animal health and well-being by reducing the number of mastitis cases, which would also reduce milk losses and treatment costs. On the genomic level, no markers associated with clinical mastitis have been reported in DSN. Therefore, we performed a genome-wide association study on 1,062 DSN cows using a univariate linear mixed model that included a relatedness matrix to correct for population stratification. Although the statistical power was limited by the small population size, 3 markers were significantly associated, and 2 additional markers showed a suggestive association with clinical mastitis. Those markers accounted for 1 to 3% of the variance of clinical mastitis in the examined DSN population. One marker was found in the intragenic region of NEURL1 on BTA26, and the other 4 markers in intergenic regions on BTA3, BTA6, and BTA9. Further analyses identified 23 positional candidate genes. Among them is BMPR1B, which has been previously associated with clinical mastitis in other dairy cattle breeds. The markers presented here can be used for selection for mastitis-resistant animals in the endangered DSN population, and can broadly contribute to a better understanding of mastitis determinants in dairy cattle breeds.
