Brancoveanu

The history of the Brancovans was illustrated through the figure of Constantin Brancovan, one of the most prominent princes of Wallachia (ruling from 1688 to 1714), beheaded at Constantinople and eventually declared saint and martyr of the Romanian Orthodox Church.
Possessing a huge fortune, the direct descendants of the prince continued to enjoy a singular social position during the 18th and the early 19th centuries, its members being appointed between the highest dignitaries of the realm. Having no issue, the last descendant per masculos, the great ban Grigore Brancovan († 1832), make several arrangements in order to insure the continuation of his blood. He adopted a niece to his wife, Zoe Mavrocordat († 1892), and married her with Gheorghe Bibescu, prince of Wallachia between 1843 and 1848. Their first born, also named Grigore († 1886), obtained in 1828 the written consent of the great ban “to be named and to sign as Brancovan”. Inheriting the estates of the family, Grigore also obtained, in 1860, from the emperor Franz Joseph I, a confirmation of the titles conferred upon his ancestor, prince Constantin Brancovan (count of Hungary in 1688 and prince of the Holy Roman Empire). In 1877, the Brancovans were inscribed in the Almanach de Gotha, the well known annual publication of the European royal and princely houses.
Being the first time for a Romanian family to appear in the Almanach, the 1877 edition contained detailed information on the history of the Brancovans, also including a notice on the family’s coat of arms. Besides several historical inaccuracies (more or less voluntary), the notice demonstrates the integration of a Romanian family in the continent’s genealogical elite.

Η μονωδία του Λάμπρου Φωτιάδη (1752-1805) εκτείνεται σε 400 ιαμβικούς στίχους και έχει διασωθεί σε χειρόγραφο της Εθνικής Βιβλιοθήκης της Αθήνας (ΕΒΕ 2390, σ. 1112-1123) μαζί με άλλα, επίσης ανέκδοτα επί το πλείστον, πονήματά του. Η συλλογή αυτή χαρακτηρίζεται από την εφήμερη θεματική της καθώς συμπεριλαμβάνει (επιτύμβια κυρίως) επιγράμματα, εγκωμιαστικούς λόγους και ιδιωτικές επιστολές.
          Τη μονωδία αναφέρει ο Ιάκωβος Ρίζος Ραγκαβής στη Συλλογή διαφόρων τραγωδιών, όσαι παρεστάθησαν εις το θέατρον του Βουκουρεστίου (1820: τόμ. 1, ΧΙΙ) και φαίνεται ότι άρεσε τόσο στους ομογενείς όσο και στους ξένους Ελληνιστές. Το αν η μονωδία όντως παραστάθηκε στο θέατρο ή αν απλώς προοριζόταν για ανάγνωση σε μικρό κύκλο δεν αποσαφηνίζεται από τον Ραγκαβή. Το ποίημα παρουσιάζει ιδιαίτερο ιστορικοκοινωνικό ενδιαφέρον, καθώς περιέχει πολλές (επί το πλείστον άγνωστες) βιογραφικές πληροφορίες για την οικογένεια των Βραγκοβάνων και αναφορές στον ρωσοτουρκικό πόλεμο (1787-1792).
Η παρούσα ανακοίνωση έχει σκοπό να παρουσιάσει το περιεχόμενο της μονωδίας, τοποθετώντας το στο κοινωνικό πλαίσιο των ευγενών του Βουκουρεστίου γύρω στο 1790. Πως θρηνούσαν τους πεθαμένους τους και ποιό ρόλο παίζει η μορφή του κειμένου (μονωδία, επίγραμμα) σε σχέση με την αρχαία γραμματεία; Ποιό ρόλο έπαιζαν οι Έλληνες διδάσκαλοι και ποιά η σχέση τους με τους Ρουμάνους ευγενείς; Ποιές είναι οι μορφές κοινωνικότητας και ποιοί οι χώροι συνάντησης πριν από την επίσημη ίδρυση του θεάτρου του Βουκουρεστίου (1817); Τέλος, θα προσπαθήσω να εξιχνιάσω μέσα από άλλες πηγές τη γενικότερη λειτουργία της εφήμερης ποίησης και της απαγγελίας λόγων ή ποίησης σε κλειστούς κύκλους (Ακαδημία Βουκουρεστίου, ιδιωτικά λογοτεχνικά σαλόνια, κήποι).
