Bolivian Cinema

The paper analyzes two films from Bolivia and Peru – Ukamau and The Milk of Sorrow, respectively – from the perspective of the deconstruction of cholaje evident in the dramaturgy of both films. The focus is on how cholaje is represented as a byplay and subversively deconstructed as the affirmative social and ideological paradigm in Peru and in Bolivia. Using formal and stylistic analysis, the paper focuses on the deconstructing of cholaje through the principle of associative montage in the case of Ukamau, and through anthropological and ethnographical coding in the case of The Milk of Sorrow. The analysis also emphasizes the notion of indianismo, as the ideology opposed to cholaje, which becomes a national and indigenous way of the future in Ukamau, while in The Milk of Sorrow it elaborates a feminist point of view and turns into a vehicle of emancipation for the protagonist. The goal of this paper is to reveal the deconstruction of the concept of cholaje in two seminal films of Peruvian and Bolivian cinema: Ukamau, directed by Bolivian Jorge Sanjines in 1966, and The Milk of Sorrow (La teta asustada), directed by Peruvian Claudia Llosa in 2009. The link between the two films, however different they may be in terms of aesthetic or poetic features, is the deconstruction of cholaje and the establishment of the ideology of indianismo, which was/is almost nonexistent in other Peruvian or Bolivian films. Being an avant-garde revolutionary manifesto of the indianismo movement, Ukamau is also the first motion picture from the region that denounces the principle of mestizaje (mixture) as the basis for reconciliation between colonial and postcolonial societies reshaped throughout the 20 th century. The Milk of Sorrow, a postmodern indigenous feminist melodrama, resurrects the notion of indianismo in Peru almost a hundred years after the inauguration of the cholaje. In order to outline the deconstruction of cholaje in both films, one must first establish what cholaje was/is in Peru and in Bolivia, and how it was represented in the arts. Secondly, the analysis must show how the deconstructed cholaje can be perceived as the boosting of the indianismo concept and how this concept worked in revolutionary Bolivia in the 1960s and how it operates in 21 st century Peru. The strength of the mestizaje/cholaje ideology in politics, but also in academic circles, is the reason why the issue of cholaje in both films was overlooked by the authors

Jorge Sanjinés es reconocido por la crítica nacional e internacional como uno de los grandes directores de cine latinoamericano. Este reconocimiento se debe a su nueva forma de hacer cine, que incluye su valoración de la cultura indígena como una parte del ser boliviano y, aun más, latinoamericano; su práctica del cine como crítica social y recuperación de esa misma cultura indígena en tanto problema social, nacional; y, en n, su ejercicio cinematográ co como un arma revolu-cionaria. En esta conversación, vemos su pasión como pensador en imágenes, lo vemos recontando su vida dedicada al cine, a su país, y a una idea: la recuperación de la integridad socio-cultural indígena. Su gran logro ha sido la labor cinematográ ca en la que ha proyectado la vitalidad del mundo indígena: en éste se hacen presentes actores quechuas y aymaras, hablando en su idioma. Esto ocurre desde su primera película de largo metraje, Ukamau (1966), donde incluye escenas documentales y lma eventos de esa tensa relación entre los grupos indígenas y las instituciones estatales, militares, sociales, que han tratado de asimilarlos. Incluir a estos grupos en la pantalla, pero con métodos diferentes, como Sanjinés mismo relata aquí en la entrevista, es su gran logro como cineasta. El recorrido histórico del Grupo Ukamau supera los sesenta años. Los registros orales reconocen que en sus diferentes etapas hubo mujeres llevando a cabo tareas cruciales delante y detrás de la cámara. Sin embargo, esta participación ha sido eclipsada debido al uso mayoritario de enfoques «autoristas» y formalistas a la hora de analizar los filmes de Ukamau. Con el fin de recuperar y destacar la contribución de estas participantes, este artículo plantea el uso de una metodología feminista y centrada en los procesos de producción. Para ello, propone un cambio en el valor adscrito al trabajo creativo y no creativo en las prácticas del Tercer Cine boliviano y reivindica la necesidad de considerar las relaciones personales como parte fundamental de este modo de producción. Además, analiza la participación de las mujeres bolivianas de clases subalternas tanto como públicos activos como en la realización de las películas.

The book "Teoria e prática de um cinema junto ao povo" of Jorge Sanjinés and Grupo Ukamau is published in Brazil, almost forty years after its original edition in Mexico. It is a collection of texts that aims to present the theoretical and aesthetic development of film production of the Bolivian Grupo Ukamau and the director Jorge Sanjinés. Therefore, it's a book considered essential in the formulation of 'Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano' thought.

O livro "Teoria e prática de um cinema junto ao povo" de Jorge Sanjinés e Grupo Ukamau é publicado no Brasil, quase quarenta anos depois de sua edição original no México. Trata-se de uma coletânea de textos que visa apresentar o desenvolvimento teórico e estético da produção cinematográfica dos bolivianos Grupo Ukamau e do diretor Jorge Sanjinés. Portanto, é um livro considerado fundamental na formulação do pensamento do 'Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano'.

O presente artigo se propõe à aproximação entre a concepção de “novo” que fundamenta a arte moderna e a que pode ser apreendida da proposta de “cine junto al pueblo” formulada pelo cineasta Jorge Sanjínes em seus escritos. Para tanto, por meio da análise de escritos selecionados do cineasta e do exame do filme El coraje del publo (1971), procurarei sustentar a validade de se compreender o projeto do cineasta como expressivo de uma estética cinematográfica comprometida com a elaboração de “obras em movimento”.
