Berger and Luckmann

Yorgos Lanthimos’ film, Kynodontas (Dogtooth) engages with the spectrum of Freud’s understanding of heimlich/unheimlich. The film is an unsettling exploration into the power of language, the family, control and reality building. Dogtooth is a Greek film depicting the seemingly ordinary lives of a family in suburban Greece. Whilst not typically referred to as a horror film, the director is constantly using techniques to incite a feeling of horror and revulsion in the audience through the feeling of unease that he creates. The film is part of the Greek New Wave cinema, a movement often defined by films which reflect the financial crisis and the social and political problems in contemporary Greece in a rather strange, surreal way (Vellis). This chapter will first explore Dogtooth with regards to Freud’s theory on the uncanny before secondly embarking on an analysis in light of Berger and Luckmann’s understanding of reality. Thirdly, this chapter look at the subversion and manipulation of language used throughout the film as well as the use of the uncanniness in Lanthimos’ depiction of animals. Finally, this chapter will explore the power and control shown in the family structure in Dogtooth.

What is a society? Within sociology and political science, theoretical debates are typically concerned with how societies can be studied in the best possible way. Despite the importance of these epistemological questions, it is timely to ask what kinds of entities compose society, what the relationship between them might be and whether humans may be said to live in 'societies' at all. How do we conceive of a sociological theory that takes these fundamental- and more ontological-problems seriously? This book suggests some solutions based on the anthropology of science of Bruno Latour and the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari. The central argument is that these thinkers provide perspectives which can both reinvigorate the theoretical debates within sociology and provide better analytical tools for social research. Although sociology does not adhere to the letter of Durkheim's dictum that society should be studied as an object, or of Weber's theory that only meaningful relations are of interest, it still owes these two forefathers a great deal. Their intellectual influence has made it notoriously difficult to reconceptualize social thought from within the discipline itself. As a result, sociology has become entrenched in an unwarranted anthropocentrism, an inability to integrate language and technical objects as part of its analytical foundation, and a marked subordination to 'state thinking'. By introducing concepts like the collective of humans and non-humans, event, plane and assemblage, this book indicates new avenues for empirical research which will make a break away from the established patterns possible. Unfortunately, many previous applications of Deleuze and Guattari's thinking within the social sciences leave much to be desired. A recurrent phenomenon has been the rather imprecise treatment of their concepts. Furthermore, analyses of their concepts are not much more than meta-commentaries on meta-commentaries. To redress these shortcomings, this book presents a more thorough reception of this body of philosophy within the framework of sociological theory.

En los debates en torno a La construcci6n social de la realidad
(1966) -obra pionera de Berger y Luckmann, publicada hace
50 aftos y que continua siendo uno de los textos mas populares
en sociologia-, se reconoce en gran parte la veta fenomenol6-
gica de su enfoque. Su trabajo esta vinculado adecuadamente
con el camino abierto por Alfred Schutz, quien merece recibir
creditos por su sociologia fenomenol6gica. Sin embargo,
a menudo se pasa por alto que lo que califica el enfoque de
Berger y Luckmann como un trabajo "fenomenol6gico'' es una
conexi6n oblicua con las raices fenomenol6gicas -de hecho, un
desliz conceptual [conceptual slippage]-. En la medida en que
este capitulo se concentra en los contornos principales de La
construcci6n social de la realidad, abordara una gran preocupaci6n
con respecto al concepto mismo de 'construcci6n social:
al ofrecer una breve genealogia conceptual de la interpretaci6n
sociol6gica de conceptos fenomenol6gicos de Berger y Luckmann,
que muestra las continuidades y rupturas con esta tradici6n.

In this paper, I want to discuss the main proposition from Berger and Luckmann’s seminal book, The social construction of reality (or. 1966) – the idea that the everyday is the arena through which the social world comes into being--and to pair it with the understanding of memories and everyday life in postsocialist studies. It seems that various disciplines dealing with postsocialism sometimes treat the memories of socialism as an untheorized background of the analysis. I propose that postsocialist studies should do better by actively engaging in understanding the memories of socialism (and its aftermath) as an active force in shaping the present that should be addressed not only through the narratives of the past, but through the concept of the “everyday.” For that purpose, I deploy the contemporary Western idea of
ethnography as a specific qualitative study of the present that can be a useful tool for the understanding of society and social reality in the way they are described by Berger and Luckmann. I believe that Berger and Luckmann’s account may shed new light on some of the central topics of related to the post-Yugoslav predicament (like the state, society,
morality, and “normality”) and I offer new readings of some scholarly works that deal with these concepts (including my own).

The increasing use of the virtual space invites ethical reflection on revealed forms of moral progress. Social scientist, psychologists and philosophers are not yet able to conclude on their ethical implications. In particular, there have been few attempts to explore how social knowledge might examine these developments. To address this lacuna, this paper investigates the moral progress of online relationships by means of the theory of The Social Construction of Reality of Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann, which holds that the significant other plays a key role on the character building of the individual. This paper argues in favor of a new belief: the cyberspace creates ways of relating that produce moral progress. On one hand, the multiplicity of significant others will represent roadblocks for the individuals, forcing them to develop ethical skills to overcome them. On the other hand, and most importantly, significant others will interact among each other to constitute new trues that will set the way for a new moral venue. This outcome is explained using the concept of the generalized other as exposed by the philosopher George H. Mead. As a result, I propose that cyberspace is positively shaping the moral
character of the individual.

Este libro publicado por Polity Press ofrece un
panorama de la producción eminentemente estadounidense
en cultura y cognición. Su autor, Wayne
Brekhus, es profesor de sociología de la Universidad
de Missouri y pertenece a la que él mismo
denomina escuela zerubaveliana, en homenaje a
Eviatar Zerubavel, profesor de Rutgers University.
Zerubavel es el fundador de la rama culturalista de
la sociología cognitiva, y sus libros Social Mindscapes
(1997) y The Elephant in the Room (2006)
son ya clásicos. Las referencias de Zerubavel,
juntamente con las de Karen Cerulo, profesora de
la misma universidad y editora de la Sociological
Forum, y las de Omar Lizardo, catedrático de la Universidad
de Nôtre-Dame constituyen los tres pilares
de la bibliografía de este volumen.
La razón por la cual empiezo con esta tríada
es porque son nombres que delimitan el alcance
de este libro. Al revisar la lista de referencias
vemos cómo la panorámica de estudios sobre los
elementos cognitivos de las prácticas culturales se
centra en la tradición de la Costa Este. Se excluye
por completo la sociología cognitiva fundacional de
Aaron Cicourel (con Cognitive Sociology de 1974) y
las propuestas internacionales de Marion Fourcade
(2012), TiaDeNora (2014) y Bernard Lahire (2008)
desde UC Berkeley, Exeter y Lyon. Los capítulos uno
a cinco son un compendio de estudios empíricos
sobre diversos fenómenos culturales relacionados
con la percepción, la categorización, las metáforas,
las identidades, el tiempo y la memoria que ofrece
una visión muy parcial de la sociología cognitiva
en cultura. Otra sorpresa se produce al leer la introducción
y las conclusiones, los únicos capítulos
teóricos del libro. Brekhus hace allí su propuesta,
con una clasificación paradigmática de las producciones
que él considera como propias de la sociología
cognitiva de corte culturalista.
En la introducción, Brekhus resume en 5 líneas
la aportación clásica de Berger y Luckmann: “La
construcción social de la realidad es una idea que
fue definida por primera vez y popularizada por
Berger y Luckmann (1966) y es un supuesto básico
para los sociólogos, aunque a menudo se da por supuesto
como talón de fondo sin ser explícitamente
delimitada” (p. 1). Berger y Luckmann, sin embargo,
dedican más de 30 páginas de La construcción
a comentar pasajes de Alfred Schütz, fenomenólogo
social de la New School que brilla por su ausencia
en el volumen que nos ocupa. Dejan muy claro su
continuidad con la obra de Schütz, literalmente
afirmando que “Personalmente debemos la percepción
fundamental de la necesidad de esta redefinición
a Alfred Schütz (…) Schütz se preocupó
sobre todo por analizar la estructura del mundo del
sentido común de la vida cotidiana” (1988: 31-32)
Y un poco más abajo le citan directamente: “El conocimiento
está socialmente distribuido, y el mecanismo
de esta distribución podría ser el objeto de
estudio de una disciplina sociológica”. Parece claro
que Brekhus silenciando esta tradición teórica tiene
la intención de separarse de la fenomenología
social en sociología y reivindicar una perspectiva
teórica propia.

In the present paper, I intend to systematically revisit Thomas Luckmann's account of the relation between phenomenology and sociology and to assess its strengths and weaknesses in terms of constructive criticism. In order to achieve this aim, I will proceed in three steps. First (1), I will reconstruct the Luckmannian approach by means of an exhaustive analysis of his programmatic texts. Second (2), I will identify its strengths and merits. And finally (3), I will discuss its shortcomings and try to correct them in two ways, namely, by bringing Luckmann into a dialogue with other sociological-theoretical and phenomenological accounts, and by counteracting some of his problematic claims with alternative insights contained in his own work.

'Johannes Frederik Burow widmet sich in seinem Beitrag der Frage, ob die Konstruktion sozialer Roboter Verantwortung mit sich bringt – und wenn ja, welche und für wen? Aus sozialkonstruktivistisch wissenssoziologischer Perspektive nach Berger & Luckmann argumentiert er am Fallbeispiel Spielzeugroboter, dass mit den Robotern möglicherweise neue »signifikante Andere« ins Kinderzimmer einziehen. Er zeigt, wie über den Blick auf die Verantwortung klar wird, dass nicht die Roboter selbst in die Wirklichkeitsproduktion der Kinder eingreifen, sondern vielmehr die Wirklichkeitskonzeptionen anderer menschlicher Akteure durch die Roboter vermittelt werden. Die Analyse der einzelnen Verantwortlichkeiten offenbart ein komplexes Verantwortungsgeflecht aus Programmierenden, Unternehmen, Wissenschaft, Eltern und Institutionen. Diese Argumentation überträgt er abschließend auch auf andere soziale Roboter und auf nicht-materielle alltägliche digitale Instanzen wie Alexa, Siri & Co.'

El uso generalizado del espacio virtual invita a una reflexión ética sobre su impacto
moral. Sociólogos, psicólogos y filósofos son incapaces de aportar un análisis filosófico definitivo sobre
sus implicaciones éticas. En particular, parecen escasos los intentos de evaluar cómo la sociología del
conocimiento puede examinar estos acontecimientos. Para abordar ese vacío, el presente artículo examina
el espacio virtual a través de la teoría de La Construcción Social de la Realidad de Peter L. Berger y
Thomas Luckmann, que sostiene que el otro significante representa un papel fundamental en la formación
del carácter del individuo. Se argumenta a favor de una nueva creencia: el ciberespacio produce formas de
relación que crean un progreso moral. Por un lado, la multiplicidad de otros significantes representa un obstáculo en la socialización del individuo, forzándole a desarrollar una ética pragmática para superar el
desorden moral. Por otro y más importante, los otros significantes se relacionan entre ellos para constituir
nuevas verdades que favorecen la constitución de un nuevo orden moral. Este resultado se explica
mediante el concepto de otro generalizado originario del filósofo George H. Mead. En conclusión, se
propone que el espacio virtual conforma el carácter moral del individuo de forma positiva.
