The beautiful necklace with vague and glass paste heads located in a showcase not too central to the Louvre Museum provides an opportunity to retrace the journey that many materials extracted from the Phoenician and Punic tombs of Tharros traveled to find a new location. The artefacts of Tharros, taken from the Phoenician and Punic tombs that had recalled many seekers in Sinis, took different routes and arrived across Europe (and beyond), with various vicissitudes, to the museums that still preserve them. In this eventful and sometimes confused picture, the uninhibited activity of Gaetano Cara, then director of the Regio Museo di Cagliari, supported by the mediation of some of his associates, contributed to the dispersion of many objects even in private collections. Other actors and other dynamics were also activated during the second half of the 19th century and it was in this way that the artefacts of Tharros were dispersed in a myriad of collections small and large, public and private, outside the Italian country.

This brief virtual exhibition, of archival inspiration, makes use, among other resources, of documentary materials collected by the protagonists of the expeditions and deposited in part at the Museum of the Near East, Egypt and the Mediterranean (MVOEM) of Sapienza University. It aims to illustrate the results of the “historical” missions of Sapienza to Sudan – in Tamit (1964), Sonqi Tino (1967-1970) and Jebel Barkal (1973-2004), in addition to various other explorations carried out in those same years between the second and fourth cataracts of the Nile –, but at the same time looks to the future of the relations between Sapienza and the National Corporation for Antiquities and Museums (NCAM), two institutions which together, through a joint mission, will work at the Meroitic temple of Hugair Gubli and in the area of Magal (fourth cataract).
