Nile, Euphrates, Tigris and Indus rivers1. For the Roman period, Vitruvius gives a few brief accounts of
dredging, although direct archaeological evidence has, until now, remained elusive2. Here we report
chronostratigraphic and sedimentological datasets from Marseilles, Naples, Sidon and Tyre showing
evidence for extensive coastal dredging from the late 4th century BC onwards. Our aim is to compare
the chronology and stratigraphic impacts of these activities."
