It may at first appear as if some societies nad improperly been inserted in this work as ” secret societies; the Freemasons, for instance. Members of secret associations, it might be objected, are not in the habit of proclaiming their membership to the. world, but no Freemason is ashamed or, afraid of avowing himself zilch; nay, he is rather proud of the fact, and given to proclaim it somewhat obtrusively; yet the most rabid Celt, who wishes to have a hand in the regeneration of his native land by joining the Fenian brotherhood, has sense enough to keep his affiliation a profound secret from the uninitiated. But the rule I have followed in adopting societies as ” secret,” was to include in my collection all such as had or have “secret rites and ceremonies” kept from the outer world, though the existence of the society itself be no secret at all.
In fact, no association of men can for any length of time remain a secret, since however anxious the members may ‘be to shroud themselves in darkness, and remain personally unknown, the purpose for which they band together must always betray itself by some overt acts; and wherever there is an act, the world surmises an agent; and if none that is visible can be found, a secret one is suspected. The Thugs, for instance, had every desire to remain unknown; yet the fact of the existence of such a society was suspected long before any of its members were discovered. On the principle also of their being the propounders of secret doctrines or doctrines clothed in a language understood by the adepts alone,
Alchemists and Mystics have found places in this work; and the Inquisition, though a state tribunal, had its secret agents and secret procedure, and may therefore justly be included in the category of Secret Societies.

В западном эзотеризме утвердилось представление о том, что Гермес Трисмегист является легендарным родоначальником алхимии. Многие знают его как автора Изумрудной Скрижали — своего рода алхимического манифеста, который, по всей видимости, появился в арабском средневековье, но считается, что мог иметь греко-язычный прототип. Такое представление начало закрепляться уже в период поздней Античности в алхимических трактатах. Мы рассмотрим самые истоки алхимии Гермеса Трисмегиста в дошедших до нас позднеантичных трактатах «высокого» и «низкого» герметизма, а также в работах Зосимы Панополитанского и по иным алхимическим фрагментам. Также рассмотрим фигуры учеников Гермеса и загадочного Агатодемона, которые непосредственно связаны с алхимией, приведем герметическую легенду об ангельском происхождении алхимии.

The idea that Hermes Trismegistus is the legendary founder of alchemy has been established in Western esotericism. He is widely known as the author of the Emerald Tablet, a kind of alchemical manifesto that was most probably created in the Arab Middle Ages; however, it is also believed that it could have had a Greek-language prototype. This idea got established in alchemical treatises already in the period of late antiquity. We will consider the very origins of alchemy of Hermes Trismegistus in the Late Antique treatises of “high” and “low” Hermeticism that have come down to us, as well as in the works of Zosimus Panopolitansky and other alchemical fragments. Also we will consider the figures of the disciples of Hermes and the mysterious Agathodemon, which are directly related to alchemy, and recall the hermetic legend about the angelic origin of alchemy.

The Return of soul to its divine origin after Death and its descent here below according to Numenius

In only one context does Numenius tackle the return of soul to its divine origin: the description of the migration of souls after death. His thought is transmitted to us through Porphyry’s and Proclus’(s) testimonies  (De antro nympharum, §10, §§ 21-23 and In Remp. II p. 129. 4-130. 2 Kroll). The analysis of these texts shows that even though Numenius seems to conceive incarnation as bad for Soul, he also views its descent here below as the effect of an attraction for the intellect that governs the world and penetrates it. In this case, the soul concerned is not irrational soul or the irrational part of soul. It is the intellect that comes into this world to fill it up in its turn with its rational and divine presence. Soul then would not find again its spiritual source and its fellow from a superior order (?) only when it leaves this world; Soul would find it again also when it descends into it.  Hence its pleasure to become incarnate, a rational pleasure this time. In this specific context, such a view may have led Numenius to read both passages from Heraclites (22 B 77a et b DK = 102 Pradeau) that oppose the life of soul and our own in a different manner from what we usually do.

Le retour de l’âme à son lieu d’origine après la mort et sa descente ici-bas selon Numénius

Numénius aborde le thème du retour de l’âme à son origine divine dans un seul contexte : la description du voyage des âmes après la mort. Son propos est transmis par des témoignages de Porphyre (De antro nympharum, §10 et §§ 21-23) et de Proclus (In Remp. II p. 129. 4-130. 2 Kroll). Leur examen montre que même si Numénius semble généralement concevoir l’incarnation comme un mal pour l’âme, il envisage aussi sa descente ici-bas comme l’effet d’une attirance pour l’intellect qui dirige le monde et le pénètre. Dans ce cas, l’âme concernée n’est pas l’âme irrationnelle ou la partie irrationnelle de l’âme. Il s’agit de l’intellect qui pénètre ce monde pour l’emplir à son tour de sa présence rationnelle et divine. L’âme ne retrouverait donc pas sa source spirituelle et son semblable d’un ordre supérieur uniquement lorsqu’elle quitte ce monde ; elle le retrouverait aussi lorsqu’elle y descend. De là viendrait le plaisir, cette fois rationnel, qu’elle aurait à s’incarner. Une telle conception aura peut-être conduit Numénius, dans ce cadre précis, à lire les deux passages d’Héraclite (22 B 77a et b DK = 102 Pradeau) opposant la vie de l’âme et la nôtre d’une manière différente de celle que nous faisons habituellement.

Using a preserved summary of Balbillus' astrological work, the author makes the case for Balbillus' authorship, and proposes an explanation for their invention and posterior use in Valens.

Abū l-ʿAbbās Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Kathīr al-Farghānī (800/805-870 AD; also known as Alfraganus in the West) was one of the most famous Muslim astronomers in the 9th century who worked in the court of the Abbasid Caliph, al-Ma’mun.

Having curiosity and love for learning about heavenly bodies to explore them in some time, made it possible to consider some planets with their chemical components and physics can be models for really powerful and practical solar electricity products and battery samples. In this innovation synthesis, numerical scientist is provided with a guideline and content to create some noteworthy hypotheses to test and develop solar electricity reservoir examples for cleaner and sustainable industry within modern economy. This synthesis, also brings back the theory of eter into discussion claiming electrified energy has a primitive core in celestials, most probably hidden in the relation among Uranus-Neptune-World and Sun being coefficient. It has been provided that whilst a small change in the exposed amount of resonances can endanger biosphere even by means of extinction, it has not probably been thought that the resonance concept can pave the way to effective solar electricity use in industry.
Especially during the COVID lockdowns by concentrating on the discovery processes of Schumann resonance and Elf magnetism which together create the oldest layer of electro-magnetism, it has been possible to correlate them to celestial bodies of Uranus and Neptune. Albeit available as very low level of energies in terms of any economic ideal, these are determined as neutral like very low electro-magnetic levels to enhance lives of living mechanisms on the world. Despite the research is limited about outer planets with regard to the matter, the outcome of the sun coefficient with other specific planets to appear, as correlative electro-magnetism with some deeper reasoning seems available.

This paper focuses on an edition with English translation and commentary of an excerpt from the Syntagma Laurentianum, the astrological miscellany contained in the 11th century manuscript Laur. Plut. 28.34, systematically applying techniques of horoscopic astrology to the determination of the possibility, intensity, and time of rain through the year. The heading shows an attribution to "a certain Syrian" (Σύρος τις), which I claim should probably be interpreted as a misleading scribal correction of the name Σύρος. The name probably indicates servile origin from Syria, and the Greek text may indeed show interferences with Aramaic dialects. In an appendix, I discuss the possibility that the author was identical with the dedicatee of half of Claudius Ptolemy's treatises.

Who has not been fascinated in his childhood by Greek mythology and who has not wondered whether its myths were false stories? According to Suida’s lexicon, “Myth is an untrue statement that expresses figuratively the truth.” But I feel more comfortable if I say that “A myth is a philosophical fairy tale which intuitively includes the truth!” My endeavor in this study of mine is to try to raise the veil of mystery that envelops Greek mythology and discloses thus the early ideas of natural philosophy, especially those ideas that deal with astronomy which are hidden in the cosmogonic myths of the Orphic philosophers!

El objetivo fundamental de este artículo es presentar la identificación de Nicolás Múrmuris como copista principal del manuscrito astrológico Firenze, Biblioteca Laurenziana Plut. 28.33. Se aborda, además, el estudio paleográfico y codicológico del códice, que ha permitido identificar la escritura del denominado “Scribe X”, y se localiza y data la copia en Venecia, en el año 1542.

The primary aim of this paper is the identification of Nikolaus Murmuris as the main scribe of the astrological codex Firenze, Biblioteca Laurenziana Plut. 28.33. Furthermore, this paper deals with the codicological and palaeographical study of the manuscript, which permits the identification of the handwriting of the “Scribe X”, and the dating and placing of the copy in Venice, in the year 1542.

The occult is a category of supernatural beliefs and practices, encompassing such phenomena as those involving mysticism, spirituality, and magic in terms of any otherworldly agency. It can also refer to other non-religious supernatural ideas like extra-sensory perception and parapsychology.

The occult (from the Latin word occultus "clandestine, hidden, secret") is "knowledge of the hidden".[1] In common usage, occult refers to "knowledge of the paranormal", as opposed to "knowledge of the measurable",[2] usually referred to as science. The term is sometimes taken to mean knowledge that "is meant only for certain people" or that "must be kept hidden", but for most practicing occultists it is simply the study of a deeper spiritual reality that extends beyond pure reason and the physical sciences.[3] The terms esoteric and arcane can also be used to describe the occult,[4][5] in addition to their meanings unrelated to the supernatural. The term occult sciences was used in the 16th century to refer to astrology, alchemy, and natural magic, which today are considered pseudosciences.

The term occultism emerged in 19th-century France, where it came to be associated with various French esoteric groups connected to Éliphas Lévi and Papus, and in 1875 was introduced into the English language by the esotericist Helena Blavatsky. Throughout the 20th century, the term was used idiosyncratically by a range of different authors, but by the 21st century was commonly employed – including by academic scholars of esotericism – to refer to a range of esoteric currents that developed in the mid-19th century and their descendants. Occultism is thus often used to categorise such esoteric traditions as Spiritualism, Theosophy, Anthroposophy, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, and New Age.

It also describes a number of magical organizations or orders, the teachings and practices taught by them, and to a large body of current and historical literature and spiritual philosophy related to this subject.

COVID-19 has affected our lives tremendously; it reminded us – more than any other recent event in history – of how vulnerable and exposed we are to what Susan Sontag calls the ‘onerous citizenship’ of illness, which everyone would be happy to renounce. The pandemic also changed the way we communicate and interact as an academic community of classicists, ancient historians and archaeologists.

The present series of online seminars, dedicated to exploring crucial aspects of medicine and technology in the ancient world, aspires to create a virtual space of dialogue for all those interested in the sciences of antiquity. Our aim is to revisit ancient notions of health and illness, human ingenuity and craftsmanship, and to ponder how others before us have wrestled with the grim reality of disease but also how they have used technê to make their lives better—or at least more endurable.

An anonimous treatise on chiromancy is newly edited (Costanza, 2017). It is noteworthy, to give further remarks about this work and to focus on it within literary context of Byzantine divination. At this respect, Middle Latin and Anglonorman treatises about palmistry are also to be compared.
This handwork shows close connections with further divinatory methods of Medieval times, notoriously with astrology. It is indebted with melothesia and various exegetical rules. An evident link is also to be stressed with palmomancy, that is, quiver-divination, which is based upon twitches of the human body, and omoplatomancy, whose prophecies are drawn from the bones of the shoulder-blade of a sheep.

Os Fragmentos Astrológicos são uma forma de conhecer a astrologia antiga com um olhar contemporâneo e de encontrar um outro sentido para a astrologia enquanto linguagem ou representação da realidade. Neste livro, estão reunidos um conjunto de textos que se encontravam dispersos no sítio, no blogue e nas redes sociais do autor. As primeiras três secções serviram de mote para o título, pois inscrevem-se no estilo fragmentário sem perderem, porém, a visão de totalidade. Na última parte, foram incluídos três ensaios que, embora publicados em parte ou no seu todo, foram revistos e aumentados e que estão em harmonia com os excursos anteriores.
