Albertino Mussato

The trade union was established under the federation of employees known as ‘Trade union Congress of Tanzania’ (TUCTA). Trade union was established in order to observe employees’ rights inside and outside of working place as well as to observe their beneficiaries concerning their salaries. This paper will observe in detail the role of TUCTA as federation of Tanzanian employees, its responsibilities, its success and failures as well as challenges that lead to failure of the federation. But also this paper will observe what the employees (as members of the union) and the government can do in order to meet success toward employees and nation development in general.

In Seneca's tragedies the tyrant does not figure with the same pre-eminence that he would go on to acquire in Renaissance tragedy. The aim of this paper is to outline the cultural framework within which the tyrant as a «mask of the villain» (D. Lanza) is viewed in both the theatre of Seneca and its later reinterpretations.

English - This paper offers an analysis of the relations between Albertino Mussato and Seneca’s tragedy, particularly between Mussato’s Ecerinis and Seneca’s Troades. This latin tragedy has a big influence on Ecerinis, by frequent allusions and quotations, and by the themes of war, cruelty and fortune.

Between the first century A.D and the medieval era, Seneca’s tragedies had no great relevance and were soon largely forgotten, like most Latin classic texts. It was not until the 13th Century that the first manuscripts reappeared and circulated in northern Italy and in France, emerging as the main – and, at the time, only – model of ancient tragedy. They would maintain this status for over three centuries. Within the European tradition, Seneca’s plays thus acquired a relevance that they had not had (and could not have had) in antiquity. Three people had an essential role in their rediscovery and in the development of the later tradition: Lovato Lovati and Albertino Mussato from Padua, and the English Dominican friar Nicholas Trevet. Lovato correctly identified and analysed the tragic meters used by Seneca, while Mussato first tentatively composed a “Senecan” play, Ecerinis, that resorted to both tragic and epic forms, and was not meant to be staged; Trevet wrote the first commentary of the entire body of Seneca’s tragedies. Both Mussato’s and Trevet’s readings of Seneca’s works were strongly prejudiced by medieval ideas about tragedy, which, being based solely on poor and indirect information, had greatly distorted the genre’s original features. The few medieval attempts to restore literary form to comic and tragic plots had resorted to elegiac meter within narrative settings somewhat removed from those of the ancient texts. Ideas about theatrical performances in Greece and Rome were distinctly confused. Both Mussato’s compositional experiment and Trevet’s analysis represent two extraordinary attempts to reinvent the ancient genre, by projecting onto it the prejudices and conventions of a culture as yet ignorant of Classical dramatic forms. Such a complex weave of medieval and ancient culture, after some experimentation in Latin during the 15th Century, was to shape the basic modern theatre forms elaborated in the different European languages.

Il testo in questione, fondato sulle edizioni di Padrin (1900) e di Chevalier (2000), è accompagnato da un sintetico apparato di note nel quale vengono registrati i modelli classici, cristiani e medievali utilizzati dal Mussato per la composizione della sua tragedia. Il «De gestis Italicorum post Henricum VII Cesarem» di Albertino Mussato (1261-1329) si apre col resoconto delle reazioni alla morte dell’imperatore Enrico VII (24 agosto 1313), raccontata con dovizia di particolari a conclusione del «De gestis Henrici VII Cesaris». La scomparsa di colui che era stato il protagonista e, in un certo senso, il motore della sua prima prova storiografica non fece quindi venire meno in Mussato il desiderio di narrare gli eventi più significativi del proprio tempo. Quasi senza staccare la penna dal foglio, Albertino, pur fortemente impegnato nell’azione politica, passò così dalla composizione del primo a quella del secondo e più imponente «De gestis», che prosegue in quindici libri fino a registrare alcuni accadimenti del giugno 1321. Qui si offre l’edizione criticamente fondata dei libri I-VII, arricchita da note di contestualizzazione e commento, tappa intermedia di un progetto di edizione integrale dell’opera.
Nei primi sette libri del «De gestis Italicorum», Mussato narra le turbolente vicende d’Italia (soprattutto dell’Italia centro-settentrionale) dall’agosto 1313 ai primi mesi del 1316, riservando una posizione privilegiata alla sua Padova, impegnata in un logorante conflitto con Cangrande della Scala, destinato a protrarsi tra alti e bassi fino al 1328. La città di Antenore è tormentata al suo interno da tensioni crescenti, che hanno talvolta esiti cruentissimi, come il tumulto dell’aprile 1314: tra i personaggi che si muovono sulla scena cittadina c’è l’autore stesso, che racconta di sé in terza persona; ci sono anche il vescovo Pagano della Torre, dedicatario e interlocutore privilegiato dell’opera, e soprattutto i nobili signori Da Carrara che, sotto l’intelligente guida di Giacomo il Grande, si preparano a giocare un ruolo sempre più importante e decisivo. Ricco e articolatissimo è pure il resoconto della cruciale battaglia di Montecatini del 1315, la magnifica impresa di un altro grande ghibellino di quegli anni, Uguccione della Faggiuola, descritto con finezza di analisi politica e psicologica nella sua quasi irresistibile ascesa. Uno sguardo attento è anche rivolto alle vicende lombarde, che vedono contrapporsi i Guelfi, alla cui guida ricopre una posizione importante la famiglia del dedicatario Pagano, e Matteo Visconti, che va allargando sempre più la sua area di influenza. Di molti di questi «successus rerum» è attore non secondario Roberto d’Angiò, di cui si descrive anche una non fortunata spedizione contro la Sicilia di Federico d’Aragona.
Come già si verifica nel «De gestis Henrici», aperto all’insegna di Tito Livio, anche nel «De gestis Italicorum» Mussato si rivela debitore della tradizione storiografica antica, soprattutto per quanto riguarda i paradigmi di interpretazione morale delle vicende storiche, che risentono in particolare delle riflessioni sallustiane. Ma la storia di Roma, soprattutto della Roma repubblicana, influenza in maniera significativa pure il discorso sulle istituzioni politiche cittadine contemporanee, sul loro funzionamento, sul loro sviluppo e sul loro declino, mentre nella tessitura della prosa del Padovano riemerge più volte la memoria dei poeti antichi.

The volume contains the first critical edition of books 1-7 of the «De gestis Italicorum post Henricum septimum Cesarem» by Albertino Mussato (1261-1329), provided with a commentary. The work narrates the troubled events which occurred in central and northern Italy between August 1313 (death of Emperor Henry VII) and the early months of 1316. Within Mussato’s narration, a preferential position is held by Padua, the author’s homeland, involved at the time in a conflict with Cangrande della Scala, and blighted by increasing internal tensions which sometimes lead to bloody upheavals – such as the tumult of April 1314. Mussato also provides a detailed recount of the battle of Montecatini, the exceptional military endeavour of another great Ghibelline, Uguccione della Faggiuola, whose nearly unstoppable ascent is described through a fine political and psychological analysis.

This contribution analyses and publishes the 'Evidentia tragediarum Senece' by Albertino Mussato, a treatise in dialogue form designed to define tragedy as a genre and to describe Senecan metre. In the light of structural and textual considerations the work appears to be incomplete; it is considered alongside Mussato’s other works relating to Seneca, with the suggestion that it was part of a single grand project. The context in which the 'Evidentia' were produced and their limited circulation, restricted to Paduan circles, are discussed; the MS tradition is enlarged by the addition of a late witness. Close examination of the numerous textual puzzles combined with an assessment of the value of each witness for editorial purposes make it possible to offer a better critical edition, accompanied by a serviceable translation and a substantial commentary.

Close observation of two portraits shows that they are ‘facsimile portraits’, exploiting mechanical means of reproduction with the intention of capturing and recreating exact physical likeness.  The roles of the patron Enrico Scrovegni, the early humanist Albertino Mussato, and the anonymous artists are considered; the portraits express a particular historical consciousness arising in a specific cultural milieu.  This discovery challenges prevailing ideas about medieval concepts of likeness, and can prompt revision of accepted histories of portraiture.  Establishing a category of ‘facsimile portraiture’, and employing methods of close observation may also help to nuance historical understanding of portraiture in other periods.

The article deals with a short, almost unknown Latin poem by Albertino Mussato entitled Somnium, which relates the author's oniric journey into the afterlife. As has already been noted by critics, it is a scholarly exercise in controversy with Dante and linked to classical sources, especially Virgil. The present article defines the position of the text in the tradition of medieval visions of the afterlife: it classifies the descriptive and narrative motifs used by the author, compares them with medieval texts previous or contemporary to Mussato and underlines the hybrid and original solutions provided by the author to this tradition. Although the innovation of the canon of visions of the afterlife does not appear to be Mussato's priority, it nevertheless provides a curious example of the contamination of the genres and forms of medieval literature.

A well known feature of the MS tradition of the Ecerinis by Albertino Mussato is the presence of comments in the margins. This paper identifies various traditions of commentary and their distribution. Some of them, in branch ‘a’ of the tradition, depend in varying degrees on the Commentum of Guizzardo and Castellano, while others are independent. Among the latter one can trace traditions of exegesis that have features in common in individual branches, but there is also material common to more than one. The differing interests of the commentators – metre, history, grammar – suggest a variety of intended destinations and a knowledge of the tragedy in more than one cultural circle.

The article deals with a collection of Latin poems concerning the death of Benvenuto Campesani, traditionally attributed to the poet and historian from Vicenza, Ferreto Ferreti. The author, on the basis of new manuscript evidence and through an overall reassessment of the structure of the corpus and the contents of the individual poems, demonstrates that five of the six items must be assigned to the famous tragedian Albertino Mussato. As a consequence of this reconstruction, the collection is revealed to be a correspondence in verse between these two leading figures of early 14th c. Italian literature.

What did it mean to be a poet in fourteenth-century Italy? What counted as poetry? In an effort to answer these questions, this book examines the careers of four medieval Italian poets (Albertino Mussato, Dante Alighieri, Francesco Petrarch, and Giovanni Boccaccio) who wrote in both Latin and the Italian vernacular. In readings of defenses of poetry, speeches and letters on public laurel-crowning ceremonies, and other theoretical and poetic texts, this book shows how these poets viewed their authorship of poetic works as a function of their engagement in a human community. Each poet represents a model of the poet as a public intellectual - a poet-theologian - who can intervene in public affairs thanks to his authority within texts. The City of Poetry provides a new historicized approach to understanding poetic culture in fourteenth-century Italy which reshapes long-standing Romantic views of poetry as a timeless and sublimely inspired form of discourse.

This article analyses the glosses on Albertino Mussato’s tragedy 'Ecerinis' by the North Italian magister Bartolino Vavassori, preserved in the manuscript G 111 inf. of the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan (dated 1400). The commentary, which mainly aims at describing the contents of the work, its structure and its metrical aspect, makes use of historical and literary sources (e.g. the Paduan chronicle known as 'Chronicon Marchiae Tarvisinae et Lombardiae', Dante’s 'Divine Comedy' and its 'Comentum' by Benvenuto da Imola) shared with other witnesses of the 'Ecerinis', whereas it is thought to be independent from Guizzardo da Bologna and Castellano da Bassano’s 'Commentum' on the tragedy. A complete edition of Bartolino’s glosses is provided in the Appendix.

Eventi astronomici inconsueti quali eclissi e comete trovano frequentemente posto nelle opere storiografiche di Albertino Mussato: ciò che caratterizza gli scritti del Padovano sono l’esattezza scientifica e la precisione della terminologia tecnica tramite le quali è descritto il corso degli astri; elementi, questi, che fanno pensare a un milieu culturale, quello dello Studium padovano, dove esisteva una rete di scambi tra i diversi settori (letterario, giuridico, scientifico, etc.). Più velata è la presenza dell’astronomia-astrologia nell’Ecerinis, ma non per questo meno importante: la tragedia si apre infatti sotto il segno di un «cruentum sidus» che lascia presagire il sanguinario svolgimento della vicenda e la sua truculenta conclusione, tutta innervata da una trama di carattere astrologico. Il presente contributo intende fornire una prima mappatura dei riferimenti astronomico-astrologici nella tragedia, indagando in particolare il lessico utilizzato, i possibili legami con le dottrine scientifiche coeve, il significato di tali rimandi nell’economia dell’opera e dell’intera produzione del Padovano: anche l’Ecerinis si fa veicolo della concezione della storia dell’autore, che vede convivere elementi di determinismo astrale inseriti in una visione cristiana. Strumento principe per decriptare queste allusioni è il Commentum che due grammatici, Guizzardo da Bologna e Castellano da Bassano, hanno allegato all’Ecerinis con lo scopo di illuminarne il dettato non di rado oscuro.

The contribution analyses the scattered but numerous indications of a contribution from the friars belonging to the convent of SS. Giovanni e Paolo in Venice at the first Latin diffusion of Marco Polo’s Devisement dou monde starting both from the possible attribution to this milieu of the Latin version Z, realised in the first thirty years of the fourteenth century, and from the presence of Marco in the document of 1323 which certifies the ratification of the legacy of Giovanni delle Boccole to the convent, and finally from the traces of literary activity of personalities in relationship with it, a network of preaching friars emerges in relationship with other nearby convents (in particular Treviso) and with the first two generations of Paduan humanists (in particular Albertino Mussato). These elements, if developed with wider investigations on the patrimony of the Venetian convent, can provide new insights for the interpretation of the Dominican appropriation of Marco’s text.
