Adaptations for the Theatre

« En soi, affirme Paul Aron, aucune forme littéraire n’est étrangère à la fonction politique », même le conte, genre associé au puéril et au futile, soigneusement coupé de l’actualité, et au ton volontairement désinvolte. En témoignent ''La Gardeuse d’oie à la fontaine'', ''Les douze frères'', et ''Le Genévrier'', trois contes issus des ''Contes pour les enfants et le foyer'' (1812-1815) de Jacob et Wilhelm Grimm, et liés au politique. Une première étude se penche sur le contenu et la forme du discours politique tenu par ces contes, se révélant au cœur des débats sociaux auxquels ces œuvres prirent part, et à travers le travail littéraire qu'elles opèrent des éléments du politique. Une seconde étude s'intéresse plus particulièrement aux échos politiques de ces contes dans leur adaptation pour la scène réalisée en 2015 par les élèves de l'Ecole de la Comédie de Saint-Etienne.

Objetos tan arbitrarios como una pipa de tabaco o un sombrero tipo deerstalker han quedado irremediablemente asociados con Sherlock Holmes, de tal forma que a través de ellos se ha facilitado una identificación universal del personaje. Asimismo, no es necesario ser lector de sus aventuras originales para conocer sus principales características, ya que, como resultado de su condición de mito literario, el detective y su universo se encuentran arraigados profundamente en el imaginario colectivo.
Desde su primera aparición en público en las páginas de las revistas victorianas hasta nuestros días, la imagen de Sherlock Holmes ha ido evolucionando, además de a través de la literatura —con el surgimiento de nuevas ficciones en torno al personaje—, mediante su expansión a diversos medios —entre los que destacan el teatro y el cine— que han ayudado a configurar una visión más o menos estandarizada del personaje, aunque rayana en el estereotipo. Este trabajo pretende un acercamiento a ese proceso de transformación, destacando los aspectos claves que han ido modificando al personaje, así como reflejar la tendencia hacia la modernización que el detective está sufriendo en los últimos años, como consecuencia de un auge en su popularidad y de un trasvase a nuevos medios.

Sherlock Holmes Fragmented Mirror: a Myth’s Image

Random objects such as a smoking pipe or a deerstalker hat have been irremediably associated with Sherlock Holmes, so that through them it is easier to have a universal identification of the character. Besides, it is not necessary to be a reader of his original adventures in order to know his main characteristics, since, as a result of his status as a literary myth, the detective and his universe are deeply rooted in the collective imagination. 

From its first appearance in public in the pages of the Victorian magazines to the present day, the image of Sherlock Holmes has been evolving. Literature, theatre and cinema have helped to shape a more or less standardized vision of the character, although it borders on the stereotype. This work intends an approach to this process of transformation, highlighting the key aspects that have been modifying the character, as well as reflecting the trend towards modernization that the detective is suffering in recent years, as a result of a boom in popularity and a transfer to new media.

El director de escena Álvaro Custodio (1912-1992), miembro en su juventud de La Barraca de García Lorca, formó durante su exilio en México (1944-1973) una importante compañía dedicada a los clásicos del teatro español. El montaje más representativo de la compañía fue el de su particular versión de La Celestina, a la que acudió en primer lugar por identificar la heterodoxia de Fernando de Rojas con la de los republicanos españoles. El artículo analiza con detalle las motivaciones y
las decisiones dramatúrgicas que conforman su versión, entre las que destacan, entre otras cosas, el perfilado de Melibea como heroína romántica y la atribución a Pleberio de rasgos propios del padre celoso de la comedia del Siglo de Oro.

This chapter interrogates the political dimensions of two contemporary adaptations of canonical Ibsen plays: Simon Stone's production of The Wild Duck (Belvoir Street, Sydney, 2012) and Thomas Ostermeier's An Enemy of the People (a work produced by Berlin's Schaubühne that premiered at the Avignon festival in July 2012 and subsequently toured internationally). It also unpacks the ethical and political conundrums generated by these works with reference to Giorgio Agamben's concepts of the " coming community " and " whatever singularity, " which develop new ways of thinking about the individual and community that are not predicated on conventional philosophical categories of being and belonging.

The paper deals with linguistic principles of theatre adaptations of narrative texts. The main rule is the transformation of the narrator’s text in the character’s cues, so as the ‘story’ forms become ‘discourse’ forms, considering the dichotomy proposed by Emile Benveniste.

The primary aim of this paper is to discuss the staging of The Street of Crocodiles by the group Complicite in 1992. The performance was based on Bruno Schulz’s "The Street of Crocodiles" and "Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hour Glass" and was inspired by his biography. Complicite is at present one of the most exciting British theater groups with an international focus. In relating the history of Complicite, as well as its foundations and methods, the author shows how its production of "The Street of Crocodiles" represented an attempt to capture the fluid and changing reality found in Schulz’s prose. Moving away from the primacy of the text, and shifting the centre of gravity to the physical and creative dimensions of the performance made it possible to create art deeply immersed in the Schulzian universe. What seems untranslatable has been translated onto the stage, and Schulz’ prose has proven to be an excellent means for rendering it in accordance with contemporary sensibilities.
