Emotions in Cultural Context- course syllabus

MA class on the anthropology of emotions and emotionality at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem

‫הקורס‬ ‫מטרות‬

In this class we will deepen our understanding of emotions as mediating between humans' inner worlds and the society in which they live. Using case studies about humans' emotional worlds in various global settings and on the molding of emotion categories throughout history, we will se how the conceptualization and expression of emotions relate to one's social belonging. We will pay particular attention to the connection between emotions, gender, and economic ideology

Course/Module aims

The students will notice the various ways in which social belonging affects our approach to emotions, i.e. what emotions are considered wanted/unwanted and how to express them.

The students will know diverse conceptualizations of empathy, particularly in the context of the clinical encounter. The students will learn about the ways ethnic and gendered inequality and neoliberal ideology affect our conception of emotions.

*Learning outcomes: On successful completion of this module, students should be able to :

By the end of this class, students will: -Explain key concepts studies in class: emotions, socialization to emotion, emotion rules.

-Relate to "empathy" in the clinical context according to at least two different approaches.

-Notice how the normative conception of certain emotions (as wanted/unwanted) and their manners of expression serve states of ethnic and gendered inequality and the neoliberal market.

-Analyze texts and everyday emotional situations according to the critical approach studied in class.
