Interpreting the concept of metadrama exposed in two absurdist plays (avant la lettre in case of the first play) from Modern Era which are Six Characters in Search of an Author (1921), written by Luigi Pirandello and Waiting for Godot (1952) by Samuel Beckett.

Since Jan Kott’s monograph entitled Shakespeare Our Contemporary had been published, the question whether Shakespeare is our contemporary, received a distinct edge. In answering this question, I wish to examine the concept of the world as theatrical, being permeated with media – or in other words, being a universal stage, a Theatrum Mundi. I wish to examine the role this concept plays in making Shakespeare’s dramas our contemporaries in the sense that they relate directly to the present, the actual “here and now” of the audience, their lives and their personal responsibility in their life choices. I am interested in the way two contemporary cinematic adaptations may become, or strive to become our contemporaries by applying versions of the Theatrum Mundi concept. What is it, that may address a 21 st century global audience of Shakespeare that will make his dramas our contemporaries? Both movies to be examined thematize the grim social reality of the Second World War, and make the co...
Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot The Dual Motif
Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot: The Dual Motif2022 •
Following two world wars, the human essence was affected by pessimism and a loss of faith. As a result, new existentialist literature was produced, resulting in a new wave of absurdist fiction plays. The theatre of the absurd was first termed by Martin Esslin, whereas the term 'absurd' was first used by Albert Camus in his classic essay 'The Myth of Sisyphus'. Samuel Beckett's "Waiting for Godot," a tragic comedy, (1952) is among the most mysterious dramas of the twentieth century that represents the philosophy of absurdism. By adopting the philosophy of theatre of the absurd in analyzing "Waiting for Godot," this study focuses on Beckett's employing the dual motif in the plot of the play and its implications, represented in chances that play a significant role rather than logic in the characters' lives. As a result, the study concludes that Beckett's use of such a technique underlines the equal opportunities in the world of the play, where chances have their effects on humans; Godot might or might not come, and the characters might leave or not: illustrating the unpredictability of the real world.
Theatre and Metatheatre: Definitions, Problems, Limits
Elodie Paillard / Silvia Milanezi, Theatre and Metatheatre: Definitions, Problems, Limits, De Gruyter, 20212021 •
The aim of this book is to explore the definition(s) of ‘theatre’ and ‘metatheatre’ that scholars use when studying the ancient Greek world. Although in modern languages their meaning is mostly straightforward, both concepts become problematical when applied to ancient reality. In fact, ‘theatre’ as well as ‘metatheatre’ are used in many different, sometimes even contradictory, ways by modern scholars. Through a series of papers examining questions related to ancient Greek theatre and dramatic performances of various genres the use of those two terms is problematized and put into question. Must ancient Greek theatre be reduced to what was performed in proper theatre-buildings? And is everything was performed within such buildings to be considered as ‘theatre’? How does the definition of what is considered as theatre evolve from one period to the other? As for ‘metatheatre’, the discussion revolves around the interaction between reality and fiction in dramatic pieces of all genres. The various definitions of ‘metatheatre’ are also explored and explicited by the papers gathered in this volume, as well as the question of the distinction between paratheatre (understood as paratragedy/comedy) and metatheatre. Readers will be encouraged by the diversity of approaches presented in this book to re-think their own understanding and use of ‘theatre’ and ‘metatheatre’ when examining ancient Greek reality.
The widespread use of the metaphor of the theater of the world in many kinds of early modern European writing masks the wide range of meanings the metaphor could convey. The theatrum mundi could signify either a turning away from the material world in favor of heaven or the scrupulous study of the visible world; it could emphasize the essential hypocrisy of society as well as the centrality of human action in the world. This doubleness of meaning is as much a part of the theater metaphor as either of its senses and seems to de- pend on the regular attribution to the theater —metaphorical and actual— of a division between what it represented and the means it used to represent it. This paper argues that our usual understanding of the theater as necessarily divided between a true substance and a false seeming does not necessarily apply to early modern uses of the theater metaphor as a characterization of the process of knowing. Rather, the theater metaphor suggests that knowledge is ne...

The Theatrum Mundi and Everyman/Everywoman: traditionalist dramaturgical devices in the contemporary stage Poetics of the author, James Martin Charlton.2017 •
The Theatrum Mundi and Everyman/Everywoman: traditionalist dramaturgical devices in the contemporary stage Poetics of the author, James Martin Charlton The dramaturgy of my plays involves merging contemporary stories with traditionalist ways of looking at theatre: as a microcosm of the world, and as a stage for Everyman. How do I evolve an initial story idea – for example, that of a marriage on the rocks, or of a pimp living in exile – and combine this with an approach to stage writing which draws inspiration from medieval dramaturgical precedents. These comprise characters carrying with them archetypal and/or typical patterns of behaviour or existence, and the concept of Everyman/Everywoman as a central dramaturgical device. The paper explores the Poetics of two plays, The World & his Wife (1998) and ecstasy & GRACE (2001), both of which have affinities in terms of content with the contemporary ‘In-Yer-Face’ drama movement. However, in terms of the method of characterisation, I will demonstrate how they draw inspiration from medieval dramaturgical precedents, in terms of my characters carrying with them archetypal and/or typical patterns of behaviour or existence; with the stage as an image of the world, and with each of these play’s protagonists being contemporary form of the Everyman/Everywoman paradigm.

A Study of Absurdity in Samuel Beckett’s Play Waiting for Godot and Albert Camus Novel The OutsiderWhile keeping in view the elements of absurdity, the study focuses the analysis of Samuel Beckett’s play “Waiting for Godot” and Camus’ novel “The Outsider”. The artistic features of these works such as title, setting, structure, theme, characters and actions/dialogues are overviewed through the lens of absurdity. Both of the texts have these issues in some proportion with different contexts but many similarities. The absurdity appeared was in the form of meaninglessness of life without any goal and purpose, chaos in life, love for death and emotional and spiritual barren characters.
