Is Soil Science Dead and Buried? Future Image in the World of 10 Billion PeopleIs there a future for soil science? Yes, of course there is. The visions and images of soil science are changing. Human demand for environmental resources is quickly growing around the world. Food production must increase to meet the needs of an additional 3.5 billion people over the next 40 years. Population facing water scarcity will be doubled over the next 40 years. Land degradation and desertification problems, land use issues, global climate change, air and water quality, for example, are connected to soil. This incomplete list identifies a number of major challenges which are sufficient for any soil scientist to be interested in them. The aim of this vision paper is to through the light on the future image of soil science. The future image is not so bright if it is business as usual of traditional soil science. It is necessary to re-looking for the role of soil science in the society. Soil science plays an important role in detecting and solving environmental problems. In order to do so, and to successfully address these challenges, soil scientists will need to effectively participate in interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary studies without losing their own roots and identities. I do foresee the future of soil science if it is integrated with other fields. If we need to maintain our identity as soil scientists, there is a suggestion for a new type of soil science that is more holistic and in close relation with society needs.

The goal of this study is to clarify research needs and identify effective practices for enhancing soil health. This was done by a synopsis of soil literature that specifically tests practices designed to maintain or enhance elements of soil health. Using an expert panel of soil scientists and practitioners, we then assessed the evidence in the soil synopsis to highlight practices beneficial to soil health, practices considered detrimental, and practices that need further investigation. A partial Spearman's correlation was used to analyse the panel's responses. We found that increased certainty in scientific evidence led to practices being considered to be more effective due to them being empirically justified. This suggests that for practices to be considered effective and put into practice, a substantial body of research is needed to support the effectiveness of the practice. This is further supported by the high proportion of practices (33 %), such as changing the timing ...

Sustainable futures over the next decade are rooted in soil science2021 •
The importance of soils to society has gained increasing recognition over the past decade, with the potential to contribute to most of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With unprecedented and growing demands for food, water and energy, there is an urgent need for a global effort to address the challenges of climate change and land degradation, whilst protecting soil as a natural resource. In this paper, we identify the contribution of soil science over the past decade to addressing gaps in our knowledge regarding major environmental challenges: climate change, food security, water security, urban development, and ecosystem functioning and biodiversity. Continuing to address knowledge gaps in soil science is essential for the achievement of the SDGs. However, with limited time and budget, it is also pertinent to identify effective methods of working that ensure the research carried out leads to real‐world impact. Here, we suggest three strategies for the next ...
