2012, Dongo.
(The del Dongo effect: lacking attestations of the toponym Waterloo) The battle of Waterloo was a historical event of worldly relevance which changed the destiny of Europe and strongly affected popular awareness. Napoleon’s fall struck spirits and imagination so much as to immediately transform the place where the battle took place into a symbol and metaphor of “disastrous defeat”. In the whole 19th century Waterloo thus became (in Italy but not just there) an antonomasia used and repeated by speakers, documented in novels, in written sources and in newspaper articles. Notwithstanding this large amount of attestations, the de-toponym and the metaphorical expressions related to it were not included into Italian lexicons until the second half of the 19th century. This essay aims to fill this gap through literary examples and other attestations among the many that have been found, documenting the frequency and regularity of an antonomasia which has crossed untouched two hundred centuries of history of the Italian language.

The publication in the Red de Pensamiento Decolonial of the book by Arysteides Turpana Igwaigliginya, Crítica del Gunasdule, offers the opportunity to take stock of the studies that give the voice to the Other History, both from the native peoples and from the Italian anthropological disciplines for the answers in this perspective. The book in question, in fact, qualifies for the de-colonialist perspective, important not only for the autonomy of thought of native scholars but also in the transcultural relationship and in particular in the monographs of anthropologists who often did not give an account of this change total of perspective, or they did it belatedly. On the one hand, the research that underlies the book and the documents presented in the book come from the oral guna tradition, from the history lived and passed down through the generations, from the “songs of resistance at the time of Conquest”; the putting into crisis of the Eurocentric “discourse” has produced an ethno-historical research as a powerful tool for the conscientization and aggregation of the natives who assert themselves as a people: the indigenous gaze now investigates the own and the dominant world taking possession of the appropriate conceptual tools and putting in check the work of those who speak in their place. On the other hand, even anthropologists have sought new definitions and new ways of operating knowledge, discovering that the problem is common to scholars of other disciplines and literary fields. Thus the term anthropology is conjugated in choral, interpretative, participatory, committed… and we find also formulated the principle of reciprocity between subjects, people and cultures in the process of knowledge and research. We also find periodical publications, magazines and files, such as associations and circles that represent also in Italy the ferment and the attention around the indigenist movements and the themes of literacy and reappropriation of the mother tongue.
