Contributi di François Albera, Raymond Bellour, Giuliana Bruno, Francesco Casetti, Antonio Damasio, Uri Hasson, Erkki Huhtamo, Friedrich Kittler, Jussi Parikka, Patricia Pisters, Carl Plantinga, Murray Smith, Tim Smith, Vivian Sobchack, Maria Tortajada

Cinema e teoria storiografica antica2011 •
| Ancient Greek historians, the first historians of western civilization as well, needed to fix an unavoidable theoretical plan in the making of their works. The historical event is conceived as an evidence appearing in its visual shape, and the birth of history looks like a development of the basic pattern simply involving a report of an observed fact. Before the birth of cinema, sight and presence cannot be split; cinema lets the separation become real, but the relation between them remains the same: both documentary films and ancient Greek history take their rethoric force from the same cognitive reason: the trust in image. Neverthless this trust is bound to be heavily criticized from a gnoseological point of view. The visual fact, both in history and in cinema, is subjected to interpolation or to subjective interpretation. It is the lack of interpretation, and the confusion between fact and truth, according to Werner Herzog’s opinion, that makes the visual fact in itself insufficient."

The present paper intends to work on the Italian film Il ferroviere (Pietro Germi, 1956) as a male weepy: a family melodrama centered on the paternal figure (male), aimed at arousing emotion (weepy) among a non-exclusively female audience. In order to account for the spectator's involvement, I propose an aesthetic-cognitive approach, deriving from the studies of Murray Smith, Noël Carrol and Carl Plantinga on the cinematic emotions. In fact, although film studies, in recent years, have been confronted more and more directly with neuroscience, marrying more embodied theoretical perspectives, the analytical tools conceived in the framework of the classical cognitivism maintain a good operativeness/effectiveness. This reading starts from the attempt to reconcile the historical approach and the aesthetic-cognitive approach, in the conviction that the double perspective of investigation might be reciprocally productive: if, on the one hand, the traces of the historical reception of the film can direct the aesthetic-cognitive analysis, on the other hand, the aesthetic-cognitive analysis can illuminate the pragmatic functioning of the text in history.

This work examines “Two Women,” one of the most remarkable works of Alberto Moravia, and the cinematic transposition by Vittorio De Sica. Our main focus is on the narrative and cinematographic interpretation of the respective works. The writing of the novel, based on the experience of Moravia when he had to flee Rome in 1943, was suddenly interrupted after eighty pages and completed ten years later until its final publication in 1957. The 1960 film “Two Women,” shot by Vittorio De Sica, features Sophia Loren. Two years later, she received the Academy Award for Best Actress for her interpretation of Cesira. In the introduction, we explain the term ‘neorealism’: the movement which emerged shortly after World War II also as a reaction to the passivity of Italian intellectuals during the years of fascism. From then on, many artists have been expressing their wartime life experiences more objectively and faithfully. The analysis examines the Italian post-war neorealistic style of fiction by Moravia and of film by De Sica. Both artists bring out Italian reality of that period without filters, representing the conditions for women during and after the Second World War.
