The aim of this paper is to offer a comprehensive overview of individual scripts and graphic tipology used for the graeca in Latin humanistic manuscripts. To this purpose, the paper presents the first results of a census conducted on more than a hundred manuscripts belonging to the libraries of Florence or available in digital collections, focusing on significant case-studies. Here I dwell on manuscripts with graeca inserted by various Italian and Byzantine scribes, either professional or not: Ambrogio Traversari, Giorgio Antonio Vespucci, Johannes Skoutariotes, Bessarions’ ‘scriba a’, Manuel Chrysoloras’ pupil known as Anonymus λ, Francesco da Castiglione, Angelo Poliziano, Theodorus Gaza, an anonymous friend of Bartolomeo Fonzio, Demetrius Damilas, Athanasius Chalkeopoulos and many others. Combining palaeography and philology, codicology and prosopography, it is possible to show that leaving aside Latin books the history of Greek script and culture in 15th century cannot be written.
This paper deals with two eminent, but, in some respects, still unknown Carolingian testimonies of Cicero's Familiares and Columella's De re rustica. Both of them were emended by many humanistic hands, whose interventions, also in regard to the translation and/or emendation of the Greek, deeply influenced the subsequent manuscript tradition and the modern critical editions. These interventions turned out to belong to some pivotal figures of humanistic culture, such as Francesco Filelfo, Niccolò Niccoli, and Ambrogio Traversari. The discovery allows us to make new considerations on the reception of the oldest testimonies of the Latin classics with Greek insertions in the firs decade of the 15th century.

The perception of cultural otherness in Late Antiquity and within the Christian or pagan milieu shows a very interesting case of condemnation, about which these two sides of the Roman society were in agreement. The prophet Mani was in fact the target of a shared feeling of disapproval towards an alien faith strongly characterised by its " Persian " provenance. Greek and Latin authors, starting with the Neo-Platonic Alexander of Lycopolis, emphasised the links between Mani and the Persian Empire, where he lived, under the patronage of the king of kings Šābuhr I. The polemic against Mani and his dualistic doctrine, labelled as " heretical " , was strengthened by means of added epithets such as " Persian " , " Magician " and " Warlord " , drawing upon a well-established repository of bias and stereotyped formulae belonging to the Roman and Hellenistic culture.

The analysis of gestures in the Hittite iconographic representations, characterizing Anatolia between the 16th and the 13th centuries BC, reveals the existence of an alternative and symbolic form of communication. The aim of this study is to deduce information about the Hittite society from the iconographic identification of the Hittite gestures and their decoding, semantic interpretation and classification. In order to do this, it is necessary to analyze the repertoire offered by orthostats, rock reliefs, statues, statue bases, stelae, pendants, containers in various materials and seals, which have been organized into a chronological interval corresponding to the entire time of the formation, development, and decline of the Hittite empire. From the iconographic investigation of gestures, it will be possible to recognize the different spatial places in which the personages depicted act, and this entails special sphere of research, which includes social, political and religious analysis. The gestures in the iconographic representations animate the body, connect the characters represented, convey very specific messages, establish the connection between the divine and the human world, and scan time and space.
