The one and only, the provocative, The Great Gatsby. It couldn't have been filmed and portrayed in a more suitable way. To be more precise at the the beginning of the movie I was tun in, captured by the green light, as to where it was coming from, what it meant, and why is was so prominent in the novel. This movie was filmed in 2013 which made it modernize and also appealing to my visual senses, because it was relatable. With the novel it explicitly explain every detail and made us visualized the scenes in our imagination, and when I viewed the film I would say it was quite close to my imagination. This novel is of romance and tragedy. The themes such as hopes and dreams, violence, betrayal, honesty and dishonesty, prejudice. Themes such as these were used to portrayed Mr. Fitzgerald conception. In the end when this movie was released in theaters the sales went incredibly well, making over three hundred million dollars. The Great Gatsby this story which is situated in the 1920’s, the Jazz Age, after World War 1,1922 to be precise, tells us about the uproar in the bond business and the narrator of this story Nick Carraway moving to West Egg, this is where the newly rich persons lived and he lived in a small house between their mansions. We are told about Nick’s background and how he was told by his father to keep his judgment about people to himself. And through Nick we are able to meet his cousin Daisy, and his friend Tom who’s married to Daisy and in the story they were considered to be the old rich and they lived in East Egg. And these two had a marital issues and all Nick could do was witness it. At his cousins place he met her friend a famous golfer named Jordan and he was attracted her. Nick lived next door to a guy named Jay Gatsby. Mr. Gatsby was in love with Daisy, for they had a relationship in the past and he was trying to gain her attention.Nick and Gatsby met and he met Daisy through Nick. They rekindled a fire of love. Gatsby eventually got her. In this marriage both Tom and Daisy were having affairs. The downfall of Mr. Gatsby and Daisy's love affair took place as Tom revealed the illegal activities that Mr. Gatsby took part in and Daisy was hurt and withdrew herself from the relationship and this lead to a tragic downfall. In creating a movie choosing the characters is the most essential part of it because they have to deliver what you want the audience to feel. The Great Gatsby film director is Baz Luhrmann. He chose actors that he believed were best suited for the roles of these characters, and I would have to agree with him in his choice of actors. With Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton. These three actors were best suited for their roles apart from the fact that they were well know actors, they were experienced in the field that they were given to perform. Take for instance Leonardo DiCaprio was in a movie called “ The Wolf of Wall Street” this would relate to “The Great Gatsby” because in the movie we see that Leonardo DiCaprio acquired his wealth through the bonds business but he did it illegally, and in the movie, The “Wolf of Wall Street” Leonardo DiCaprio we saw that he was poor and he rose to power and wealth through the bonds business and it too had a tragic effect on him. He was experienced in this field that's why I believe he performed his role so well. He also acted in “Titanic” a famous movie world wide, it movie ended in the downfall of his character, and this movie was a tragedy, romance movie. He was also skilled in the field of romance and tragedies, which made him a perfect person to act the role if Mr. Gatsby. Tobey Maguire he was well known for the movie “Spiderman” in that character he also played the protagonist as he was the hero in the movie and tried to save everyone from harm's way from the evil villains. In “The Great Gatsby” this side of Tobey Maguire was shown as his witness all the wrongdoing his friends, cousin, and neighbor did but he always saw the best in them and never judge and I would say from his experience in “Spider Man” being the good guy he was able to adapt to this role easily. And Joel Edgerton he is well known to act in action movies, movies with a lot of violence. In “The Great Gatsby” he's aggressive, and violent and I would also say fearless when it comes to violence. And from his wide experience acting violent movies such a “Black Mass” he was also able to perform his role easily. The director was careful in who he chose for each role and we can see from these three examples he chose persons who were experienced in that field. When you look at these actors they are well known and are the best in their fields so the audience wouldn't have to think twice about watching the movie. This was because the director used these actors to appeal to the audience and also to connect with them as they know what to expect from these actors. The way he dressed his cast they were not entirely of the time of the 1920’s, when it comes to the men their attire were of 1920’s with a hint of modern in it but the suspenders the colors brown, black and blue, the three piece suits, the cufflinks and studs, the hats, canes and also the hairstyles they all portrayed the Jazz Age. With the women they their hairstyle and the dresses i believe were a portrayal of the 1920’s. Even though it was produced in modern times, he was able to relive the roaring twenties again and so was the audience with their convincing costumes. Even though some changes were made from the book in the movie it wasn't that drastic and it did not have a negative feedback. He left out the part of when Tom and Myrtle first met each other. But I believed that he should have put it in when the movie was at it climax to humor the audience a little bit. But he probably found that it was irrelevant because of the build up of the climax. He also did not show the funeral which I also believed he should have, to show how lonely Mr. Gatsby was and how all the person he had in his house all the person he did favors and was generous to saw him as nothing that he wasn't worth their appearance at his funeral. But by also not showing the funeral also tells me that the director is showing us the audience that because there wasn't anybody for Gatsby his death was unimportant. This movie was set in the summer of 1922, in the city of New York but it was filmed in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The mansions used in the movie were to reflect upon the time of the 1920’s but Gatsby’s own did not do that at least not the outside, it were of modern times and the inside the of the house was grand, the floor, stairs, rooms, all were a reflection of the roaring twenties. The hotel and the valley of ashes could have also been seen as part of the Jazz Age. The Valley of Ashes, was black it showed a reflection of hard times, which the persons faced, it also showed us that anything the persons who lived there would be considered dust, or one to nothing or unworthy because of their status, and their status was the lowest of all. At the beginning of the movie to the middle the mood of the movie was that of happiness, adventure, romance and coming down to the end it became of greed, the lust for power, melancholy. In this movie the use is the camera was very important to portray emotions, hidden messages, and to also give meaning to some situations. When the camera did close ups at the beginning of the movie with Daisy from her hand then to her face, they made us want to see her when we did they stayed for a while to let us delight in her beauty. Then there’s also when they did close ups when we first saw Mr. Gatsby and the billboard all for the same reason to grasp what they desire you to understand. The music in the movie was used to convey the mood and the atmosphere at a certain point of the movie. And in the movie there was one song that was repeatedly played Lana Del Rey, Young and Beautiful. One line in particular was played over repeatedly “will you still love when I'm no longer young and beautiful” and I believe the meaning that was behind this line was that Mr. Gatsby loved Daisy for five years without seeing her without talking to her, and this line I believe is Daisy asking Mr. Gatsby will he love her when she's not young and beautiful. The use of Jay Z song contradicted the time of the roar twenties because Jazz was not so prominent. At the parties Nick attended you would hear the music and it would describe the mood it would be of fun and laughter and excitement. And the audience would also feel excited and happy. The music played with the viewers emotions just by listening to the music it makes the viewers sad, happy, upset, confused and these are techniques the director uses to get across a feeling, a point, an emotion. The lighting can play an important part of the movie if done right. To build climax, to reveal a mystery, to hide something that could then be brought to light later down in the movie. In the scene where Mr. Gatsby was going to meet Daisy for the first time the place was bright and beautiful and summery. And when she arrived you can see that the colours began to fade away and the light began to dim and this was all to show Mr. Gatsby and Daisy's feeling of awkwardness and how stifling the room was feeling. They were various examples such as these to portray the characters feelings and mood. With the correct use of this method directors would get across the moods and feelings they are portraying. In The Great Gatsby the director used lighting to a high quality which as a viewer felt every emotion portrayed. As stated earlier on the director's ability to visualize this novel in his head and create and determine whether or not apart should be in the movie made it more incredible, because for persons who have read the book and watch the movie would and agree with me that it's close to what they visualized when they were reading the book and to create that image takes skills. I would say every inch of the movie was eye catching from start to finish, it kept me and the audience I'm sure wondering what's going to happen next because of how intense the scenes were we would want to see how would be resolved or calmed. His decision to have Mr. Gatsby look as if he's an innocent person who isn't involved in any illegal actives, was smart didn't make Daisy questioned his character once when she fell back in love him. Even with Daisy he made her look innocent and pure that Gatsby feel more in love with her when he saw her and when he died she didn't have the decency to visit him she treated him like if he was garbage, this shows us a heartless side of her. In conclusion we are able to see from Nick's point of view that even though Gatsby was involved in illegal activity, he was very ambitious and he had hopes like no one else and for that he was great. In his hopes to get Daisy the very same way he set out to achieve her was the very same reason why he lost her and why he couldn't have her. In this movie it was educational about the 1920’s, enjoyable with the conflict and resolution, it was and incredibly well performed movie. But I would recommend that the director should have much more extravagant houses and accessories to portray the rich. The reason for my recommendations is that although they look and acted rich they also looked middle class. Out of Five stars I would give them a four and a half. .
