The 2016 US Presidential election has been called one of the most important elections in recent memory, with important consequences within and outside the United States. The nomination process, for both major parties, was unpredictable and close. Hillary Clinton, thought to be the presumptive Democratic nominee, faced an unexpected challenge from self-identified Democratic socialist Bernie Sanders. While initially viewed as a marginal candidate, the crowded Republican primary was dominated by reality TV star and developer Donald Trump. The Presidential campaign continues to be unpredictable and tight. What are the key issues driving this election cycle? Are there any comparisons to the 2016 election? Why have the extremes of the political spectrum played such an important role this cycle? What can we expect going forward for American and global politics? Please join the Department of Political Studies and Champlain College for a roundtable and informal conversation of the 2016 US Presidential election on October 5th from 12:00 - 1:15 pm inside the Champlain Learning Living Commons. Before opening moving to discussion and question period the event will feature brief presentations.

Introduction The influence of religion on the American political landscape has for a long time been a subject of inquiry. Past findings and existing theories on the sociology of religion maintain two opposing views on the way that religion has influenced contemporary American politics. However, a closer review of the US system reveals an apparent commanding influence of religion on dominant religious rhetoric and voting patterns. Polarization has worked to motivate the masses to approve of foreign policies and even war in the case of the events after the 9/11 attacks when America invaded Iraq and Afghanistan. At the present polarization continues to be a motivating element for religious rhetoric and possibly voting patterns considering the 2016 elections. Trump being the leading republican presidential contender is an example of the influence of religion in the US politics, considering his wholesale war propaganda on Islam. His stance and political status at the present is going to play a major role in the final outcome. It is based on this premise that we suggest the ongoing influence of religion on American politics in the 2016 US presidential elections will guide the result.
A strong turnout of women, African-Americans and Hispanics, especially in battleground states, could mean victory for the Democrats

Using election results as our point of departure, this article places the 2016 presidential election in historical perspective. Trump’s victory was an “expected” outcome, as races following two-terms of one party rule usually go to the opposition party. Trump also ran close to fellow Republicans competing for Congress despite his unusual relationship with many of those in the party he captured. Trump’s victory in the presidential contest proved remarkably economical. He lost most of his votes relative to Romney in 2012 in places where it did not matter, while his opponent ran up the score in the states she already had locked down. We further measure the increasing geographic concentration of each major party’s electoral support and consider how this relates to the controversy over the Electoral College.
