This castle was the seat of the Order of the Temple between 1215 and 1314, and three general councils of the three kingdoms (Portugal, Castile and Aragon) took place there. In the early 1980s, a medieval necropolis was found in the churchyard of Santa Maria do Castelo. During the archaeological excavations of the site, several artefacts from medieval and early modern ages were found. Some of them were preliminarily shown in Toledo (1981), but only recently were all of them subject of analysis, by the author (Boavida, 2009). As there was not a proper stratigraphic record of the finds, the analysis was done comparing them to other forms that were found in other sites. With regard to the medieval ceramics, there were objects based in the Islamic tradition, a few recovered in Muslim contexts, or transition periods, from central and southern Portugal, some of them associated with Mozarabic communities. Resumo: O “castelo branco” foi mandado construir, pelos cavaleiros templários, no cume de um pequeno monte de onde é possível observar toda a região entre o vale do Tejo e o sopé da Serra da Estrela e parte do reino de Castela. Este castelo foi sede da Ordem do Templo entre 1215 e 1314, tendo aí ocorridos três concílios gerais dos três reinos (Portugal, Castela e Aragão). No início dos anos 80, foi identificada uma necrópole de fundação medieval no adro da Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo. Durante os trabalhos arqueológicos foi recolhido numeroso espólio medieval e moderno. Embora o mesmo tenha sido apresentado de forma preliminar em Toledo (Ribeiro, 1987), só recentemente foi objecto de estudo na dissertação de mestrado do autor (Boavida, 2009). Uma vez que não foi elaborado o devido registo estratigráfico dos achados, a cronologia dos mesmos foi aferida recorrendo a diversos paralelos formais. Assim, em relação às peças de cronologia medieval, foi possível verificar a presença de modelos na tradição islâmica, tendo em conta outros recuperados em níveis tardios dessa presença, ou de transição, identificados no centro e sul de Portugal, alguns deles associados a comunidades moçárabes. HISTORY Although some objects prior to the Reconquer have been found throughout the twentieth century, the Templars only founded the castle of Castelo Branco in 1215. 7KH FDVWOH EHFDPHWKH KHDGTXDUWHUV RIWKDW2UGHU until its extinction LQ(Capelo, 2007: 193-195). With a sub-square form and protected by seven towers, the castle was on Cerro da Cardosa, from where all the fields around the city can be observed. The church of Santa Maria was built inside the fortress, possibly over an ancient Mozarabic temple (Cardoso 1953: 24-25). In 1229, a palace to house the mayors was also built in the northeastern area of the citadel. The necropolis was near the south end of the church, where the market took place in medieval times, as attested by the calibre engraved on the south side of the missing doorjamb of the temple (Oliveira, 2003: 30). The names of the access to the monument also memorialise that fact - Market Street. The structure was affected by several attacks during the Restoration War (1646-1648), the Spanish Succession War (1704) and the Seven Years War (1762). In the midnineteenth century, when the fort had lost its strategic and militar functions, the City Hall authorized the reuse of its constituent materials for new buildings. Today, almost the entire fortress has vanished, only the church, largely altered, and part of the fortresswall, with two towers, remains. In 1867, the area between these two structures was grounded, to the lower level of the arch of the north side door. The excavations began that summer and prolonged into 1984. An intervention took place in the churchyard, at the south and the west of the building (Fig. 2). Most medieval materials recovered are ceramic sherds, especially cooking pots, pitchers and small jugs, of which only the broadside exists in most cases. Similar forms to chronological attribution of these pieces were identified in late Islamic or post-Reconquer contexts. In addition to some structural remains, corresponding to the previous shape of the temple and associated, an extensive area of the necropolis with graves excavated in the geological substrate to about 1,50 m depth was also discovered. At the site of landslide (Q.118) where work was focused on all campaigns. The layers in this place were very mixed. Although the site has been excavated up to 10 m deep, the geologic stratum has not been reached. Most of the materials were recovered in these layers. The cooking utensils were mostly pans, although other forms such as the frying pans also appeared. When the archaeological excavations ended, all materials were integrated on the archaeological collections of Museu Francisco Tavares Proença Júnior (MFTPJ), in Castelo Branco. 1 Castelo de Castelo Branco – Processo n.º 263; Arquivo de Arqueologia Portuguesa – DGPC The pans (1-4) show shapes with sometimes extrovert edges, thickened eliminar in some cases. In levels dated from the twelve and thirteen centuries, sherds with similar shape were recovered at various locations in the north and center of Portugal, as well, as in the villages of Santa Cruz da Vilariça and Baldoeiro (Rodrigues and Rebanda 1995: 62; Rodrigues and Rebanda 1998: 20). Similar objects were also found in Belmone fortress (Marques 2000: 280), Castelo Novo (Silvério and Barros, 2005: 99-102, 105) and Penamacor (Boavida, 2006: 89). In the last two places, contexts are associated with Mozarabic communities. thickened with sub-rectangular section, which was common in the thirteenth century in Lisbon (Gaspar and Amaro, 1997: 344) and Castelo Novo (Silvério and Barros, 2005: 155). That same chronology can be attributed to frying pans (5-6) showing affinities with a casserole collected in Castelo Novo (Silvério and Barros, 2005: 116). The pitcher (10) is identical in shape and size to others also collected in twelve-thirteen century contexts of Santarém (Mendes, Pimenta and Valongo 2002: 269) and Silves (Gomes and Gomes, 2001: 95). While in the first city it is linked to post-Reconquer contexts, in the other it arises in Almohads contexts. Within the storage and/or transport categories jugs and pitchers are the most numerous. They show decoration on neck and near the bottom, like others collected in Castelo Novo (Silvério and Barros, 2005: 165). Various fragments of which the corresponding shape wasn’t identified show different decorations on the external surface. The incised or plastic decorations (13-14) have affinities in several archaeological sites in the region, such as Idanhaa-Velha (Teichner, 1997: 348; Duarte, 2000: 137-138), Sabugal (Osório, 2008: 114) and Castelo Novo (Silvério and Barros, 2005: 163), as at some places in the northeast of the country such Vila Real (Rodrigues and Lebre, 2003: 158-159), Baldoeiro (Rodrigues and Rebanda, 1995: 163) and Santa Cruz da Vilariça (Rodrigues and Rebanda, 1998: 126). The white painted decorations (15-16) are more frequent in ceramics recovered in urban centres of the Tagus Valley, such as Lisbon (Gomes et alii, 2001, 2005; Gomes and Sequeira, 2001: 106; Bugalhão, Gomes and Sousa 2003: 142), Frielas (Silva and Barbosa, 2003: 115) and Santarém (Viegas and Arruda, 1999: 121; Liberato, 2011; Liberato and Santos, 2013; Ramalho et alii, 2001; Silva, 2011). Regarding the fabric, red or orange clays with natural inclusions such as quartz, feldspar and mica, with finemedium grain, are predominant. The pieces were exposed to oxidizing or partially oxidizing firing. Only the big containers were subjected to reducing firing. A set of coins was also found. These objects chronology extends from Sancho I (1185-1211) to Fernando I (13671383) and several discoidal funerary stelae, in most cases decorated with the pattée cross (Boavida, 2012: 210-212). The analysis of medieval pottery recovered in Castelo Branco’s citadel allowed to obtain new information about the site, although it is just partial, because it ignores their stratigraphic context.
