The paper studies the derivatives of currency names represented in the modern Russian standard and sub-standard (slang) language. The theoretical foundations of the study are the works on the semiotics, culture and mythology of the money, as well as the linguistic research based on the study of the MONEY concept. The lexical units collected as a result of socio-linguistic interviews of Siberian cities residents were analyzed in terms of the ways of their formation, and the statistical characteristic of the collected material was given. When describing the language material, particular attention was given to the use of expressive word-formation means, reflecting, along with the linguistic means of the other language levels, the informants’ value attitude to the money, domestic currency and other currencies, which play the key part in the Russian economy. The analysis revealed the common sub-standard linguistic consciousness focus on reducing the nominal value of the national currency. The nominations of foreign currencies don’t have the similar attitude.

Almost a century ago a prominent Russian philosopher Nikolaj Berdjaev reflecting on the future of Russia wrote about the need of transformation of the Russian character. Suggesting a way of doing it, he said the following: “We should adopt some Western virtues and remain Russian at the same time” (Berdjaev 2000, 270). These words of Berdjaev proved to be prophetic. In the contemporary Russian language the process of borrowing of new words and use of previously borrowed words has significantly intensified since the 1980-90s (Krysin 2002, Ryazanova-Clarke and Wade 1999). The majority of the recently acquired words denote new artifacts and realia which are becoming attributes of the changing life style influenced by Western standards (e.g. press-reliz ‘press-release’, butik ‘boutique’, brifing ‘briefing’, etc.). Among the new words there is also a small number of value terms which have entered the Russian lexicon. The adaptation of these words can be regarded as a sign of change in the...

In these remarks on traditional Russian concepts of the nature of language, I am particularly concerned with such issues as who controls the word and language; with how deafness and dumbness (which, in traditional perceptions, signify not having access to language) are explained; with what the substance of the word is deemed to be, and how the word is constructed; with how communication is supposed to happen, and how people learn to communicate. The discussion focuses on words and language of a purposive, extraordinary kind. Spontaneous speech is analysed only in cases where the unintended word is for whatever reason transformed into a word of a special, exceptional nature. I shall mostly be taking my examples from ethnographical material (descriptions of the relevant ritual procedures), and from folklore, but certain linguistic usages (e.g. proverbs) will be cited as well. Problems Of Lexicographic Interpretation Of The Latest Phraseology Of RussianThis article deals with the peculiarities of written representation of Russian business in English-language print media. Full-text articles from " The Economist " , published between 2008 and 2014, were selected to analyze the semantics of words and word combinations that imply a Russian business reality. All units were classified according to topic-relation and language sources of stereotypes. The findings showed that the topic-related stereotypes focus on representation of people in three areas – government, business, and realia. As for the linguistic perspective, figurative means are the basic sources for stereotypes, with the emphasis on similes and metaphors of people. Reference sources for figurative means and morphologic means are business-related. Though negative linguistic stereotypes prevail, there are rare positive stereotypes, expressed through syntax. Thus, linguistic stereotypical means help to create the image of Russian business in simplified categories and underlined contrasts: stereotypical lexical units of well-being are combined with characteristics of a poorly-kept country. The intercultural implication of the study is the necessity of enhanced awareness of stereotyping potential of media language.
