The Menace of Drug Abuse among Teenagers a Ticking Time Bomb in Taraba State, Nigeria2022 •
The history of the human race also includes drug usage and perhaps misuse. In and of itself, drug usage is not a bad thing; in fact, certain drugs have been a medical godsend. Herbs, roots, and bark leaves have alleviated pain and managed illness from time immemorial. According to history, the Chinese used opium to treat diarrhoea before the 18 th century. Drug misuse is a worldwide issue that threatens the lives of people, society, and several nations' political stability and security. The use of illegal drugs has expanded globally, and the key global trend is the rising availability of various types of narcotics to an ever-expanding user base. Concerning is the fact that youngsters seem to be the new market for the global pharmaceutical business. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), substance abuse is the harmful or risky use of psychoactive substances, such as alcohol and illegal drugs. Psychoactive drug usage may develop into dependency syndrome, which is the continuous, repetitive, and persistent use of the substance despite its adverse effects, resulting in the prioritization of substance use above other activities and responsibilities. Generally, drugs are helpful when properly used and destructive when misused or abused, but most youths are guilty of substance abuse (Mohammad, 2014). The use of illicit substances is a major public health problem in high-income countries like the U.S. However, this problem of illicit substance use has spread rapidly to middle and low-income countries, where most youth and adolescents are actively engaged in this illegal practice (Aliyu, 2014 & Mohammed, 2014). Many authors and researchers have shown that many contributing factors lead to substance abuse among the youth. Adolescence is the phase of life between childhood and adulthood, from ages 10 to 19. It is a unique stage of human development and an important time for laying the foundations of good health. Adolescents experience rapid physical, cognitive and psychosocial growth. This affects how they feel, think, make decisions, and interact with the world around them. Despite being considered a healthy stage of life, there is significant death, illness, and injury in the adolescent years. Much of this is preventable or treatable. During this phase, adolescents establish patterns of behaviour, for instance, related to diet, physical activity, substance use, and sexual activity that can protect their health and the health of others around them or put their health at risk now and in the future (WHO, 2022). Adolescence is characterised by increased adventurous tendencies and peer influences.

Substance use among secondary school adolescents in Gwagwalada Area Council, Abuja, Nigeria2019 •
The persistent trend of drug abuse among adolescents has become a public health concern across various regions, countries, continents and the world at large. Empirically, it has been ascertained that substance abuse is widespread globally with an estimated 120 million users of hard drugs such as cocaine, heroin and a host of other synthetic drugs. In 2013, drug use disorders resulted in 127,000 deaths up from 53,000 in 1990. Despite the efforts of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and other governmental agencies to stem the tide of substance abuse in Nigeria, there has been a consistent rapid rise in the number of cases of drug abuse among young people. In order to tackle the tenacious effects and the causes of prevalence, previous studies concentrated on different categories of people like drivers and artisans, while some focused more on both in and out-of-school adolescents; with little emphasis on factors determining drug abuse among in-school adolescents, particularly in Ido Local Government Area. This study, therefore, examined the social and psychological determinants of drug abuse among in-school adolescents in Ido Local Government Area of Oyo State, Nigeria. The study adopted descriptive survey design. The respondents were selected from four schools in Ido Local Government Area of Oyo State. Purposive, disproportionate stratified and simple random sampling techniques were adopted in selecting 75 students from each of the Schools; with a total of 300 students. Determinants of Drug Abuse (r=0.84) and Drug Abuse (r=0.76) scales were used for data collection. Four hypotheses were tested at 0.05 alpha level. Data were analysed using percentages and frequency counts as well as inferential statistics of linear regression. The sampled respondents were 157 males and 143 females. There was a significant contribution of each of the social and psychological factors to drug abuse. Parenting style (β=0.41), peer influence (β=0.29), accessibility to drugs (β=0.17) and relief from anxiety (0.21) independently and significantly determined drug abuse. It was therefore concluded that, parenting style, peer influence, accessibility to drugs and relief from anxiety are social and psychological factors causing drug abuse among in-school adolescents in Ido Local Government Area of Oyo State, Nigeria. Parents, school managements and other relevant authorities should enlighten the students regularly about effects of drug abuse on healthful living.

However, the rate of abuse of codeine and non-codeine based cough syrups among females was also found to be higher and almost at par with marijuana 31.08%. Although there was a significant statistical relationship between age and drug abuse in males with a p-value of 0.024151 at p < 0.05, the relationship was not significant among females. Conclusion: The abuse of marijuana being the most abused drug by adolescents in the metropolis, 46.67% in males, and 32.43% in females in addition to the abuse of new substances especially the high rate of codeine and non-codeine based cough syrups among females is an important finding with far reaching public health consequences. There is the need for increased awareness on the harmful physical, mental and social effects of substance abuse and stricter enforcement of drug laws and regulations to protect adolescents.

The use and misuse of psychoactive substances among adolescents are increasing in Africa. While heavy episodic drinking among adolescents in Nigeria is growing, there are no written alcohol control policies to regulate the production and availability of alcohol. This article describes the patterns and determinants of alcohol use among Nigerian adolescents in secondary school. Nineteen quantitative studies published in peer-reviewed English language-based journals were reviewed. The results reveal more current and lifetime alcohol use among males than females. The findings also reveal that the motives for using alcohol include staying awake in order to study at night, drinking to forget one’s problems, drinking to alleviate anxiety and drinking to enjoy festivals. Similarly, the results reveal that peer pressure in the form of drinking to satisfy friends or to not be seen as different from one’s group predicted alcohol use, while multiple substance-related problems were reported among substance users. Amongst other factors, the non-existence of alcohol control policies, which increased alcohol availability was associated with alcohol use. This article discusses the implications of these findings, the possible re-orientation of Nigerian adolescents, the formulation and implementation of effective alcohol policies and suggested further research.
