Traffic jams occur when a volume of traffic influx produces a demand for space more significant than the road allows. Numerical field data addressing vehicle counts and statistical computer simulations are vital tools in determining a road's serviceability and traffic level. Both have been utilized in this study. The primary objectives of this study are to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the traffic flow, measure the Level of Service (LOS), travel time, degree of saturation, delay time, and articulate a strategy to reduce traffic congestion at roundabouts. The study unequivocally concluded that the LOS at the eastern entrance is F level. The data on the number of vehicles that pass through the roundabout at the eastern entrance of Benghazi were recorded during the peak hours from (12:00 to 1:30) p.m. The mixed traffic stream was then converted to passenger car units (PCU) to be homogenously equivalent. The results of the systematic analysis of the gathered data indicate that the roundabout at Benghazi's eastern entrance requires further development to alleviate the dire traffic conditions. To run an accurate simulation, the existing road layout was surveyed using surveying instrumentation, and the results were used to build a model. Acceleration and deacceleration lanes were proposed to improve the roundabout performance and reduce congestion. Then, the roundabout expansion proposal was introduced into the simulation to study its effectiveness in reducing traffic jams. The data were analysed and tested using SIDRA software. The Level of Service at the roundabout's lanes showed tremendous improvement as the Level of Service varied from A to B levels compared to the current LOS level of F.
Roundabouts are progressively being utilized on occupied arterial streets for traffic quieting purposes. Be that as it may, on the off chance that one indirect leg is close to a conveyance center point, for instance, stopping territories of strip malls, the passage traffic volumes will be especially high in pinnacle hours. On the basis of the Al-Turkman Roundabout, which is one of the most important roundabouts in Baghdad city, linking the areas of east of Baghdad to the city center in the area of Bab Al-Moatham. This area is characterized by its high traffic volumes (congestion), especially at peak periods causing a low level of service (LOS) with increased travel time delay, costs, and CO2 emissions. The research relied on the use of the SIDRA software to assess these variables by collecting traffic volumes in this area. The research proposed a series of planning procedures which are divided according to serial time scales. These planning procedures are to address the problem of congestion and traffic jams in the area, improve the level of service, and reduce travel time, cost and CO2 emissions. The research concluded that the application of the planning proposals in the study area has improved the level of service from E and F to C, reduced travel time by 16%, reduced costs by 25% and reduced CO2 emissions by 29%.

When to Decide to Convert a Roundabout to a Signalized Intersection: Simulation Approach for Case Studies in Jeddah and Al-Madinah2020 •
The purpose of this research is to develop an empirical model for entry capacity prediction for roundabouts as a function of influence traffic and geometric features. The study area consists of five roundabout intersections with different approach leg numbers (2, 3, 4, and 6 legs) in Baghdad City. The video recording techniques is used to monitor and collect traffic data of 19 approaches. The data is obtained from video recordings using VLC media player program, and processed by prepared EXCEL sheets. Geometric elements are measured during field survey and satellite images. From entry capacity measurements at roundabouts, multiple regression model for entry capacity prediction has been developed based on circulating traffic and geometric elements using MATLAB software with high confidence level. The statistical analysis indicates that both geometric and circulating traffic have significant effect on entry capacity. The developed model has been used to find the most necessary modifications and improvements of geometric design elements of the studied roundabouts in order to enhance their operational performance.
Nowadays traffic congestion at intersections is one of the main societal, economic and environmental problems in urban areas which particularly become severe during peak hours. Roundabouts are being weigh up as substitute for traffic control device capable of improving safety and effective functioning at nodes. This study analyzed capacity and performance of 3 major roundabouts (Jubilee Park, Cocoa House and Post Office) in Sunyani, Ghana. Traffic data were collected manually at the roundabouts during peak hours in the interval of 15 minutes. Also, as-built geometric data of the roundabouts were measured in the field. Synchro plus SimTraffic 7 software’s were used to run computer simulations to estimate the capacities and performances of the roundabouts. Results showed that the Jubilee Park and Post Office roundabouts were performing above capacities based on the overall volume to capacity ratios of 0.78 and 1.13 respectively, with intersection capacity utilization (ICU) level of service H. The roundabouts were at least 9% above capacity and were being subjected to congestion periods in excess of 120 minutes per day. Similarly, the Cocoa House roundabout with volume to capacity ratio of 0.51 and ICU level of service G was 9% above the traffic-carrying ability and undergoing successive congestion periods of 60 to 120 minutes. The 3 roundabouts should be signalized to improve on vehicular movement.

Investigating Entry Capacity Models of Roundabouts under Heterogeneous Traffic ConditionsThe primary objectives of this study are to develop two roundabout entry capacity models using a regression-based multiple non-linear regression model (MNLR) and artificial intelligence (AI)-based ANFIS (adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system) model under heterogeneous traffic conditions. ANFIS is the latest technique in the field of AI that integrates both neural networks and fuzzy logic principles in a single framework. Required data have been collected from 27 roundabouts in eight states of India. To assess the significance of these models and select the best model among them, modified rank index is applied in this study. The coefficient of determination (R 2) and Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency coefficient 'E' values are found to be 0.92, 0.91 and 0.98, 0.98 for the MNLR and ANFIS model, respectively. The ANFIS model is found to be the best model in this study. However, from a practical point of view, the MNLR model is recommended for determining roundabout entry capacity under heterogeneous traffic conditions. Sensitivity analysis reports that critical gap is the prime variable and shares 18.43% for the development of roundabout entry capacity. As compared with the Girabase formula (France), Brilon wu formula (Germany), and HCM 2010 models, the proposed MNLR model is quite reliable under low to medium ranges of traffic volumes. Roundabouts are a specialized form of an un-signalized intersection in which traffic moves in one direction around a central island. Direction of traffic, according to left-hand or right-hand driving rules, depends on the specific country. Roundabouts have been used as an effective intersection control measure to improve safety and operational performance under low to high circulating traffic flow conditions. As compared with other, signa-lized, intersections, roundabouts have several basic advantages, such as speed reduction of vehicles, less delay, pedestrian safety, aesthetics, and reduction of conflict points. A signalized intersection has 32 conflict points, whereas a roundabout with two circulating and entry lanes has 8 and 16 conflict points, respectively. Because of the increase in the use of roundabouts, an assessment regarding operational performance needs to be undertaken. Evaluation of capacity at roundabouts is an important aspect of operational performance that describes the present traffic scenario, level of service, delay, accidents, operational cost, and environmental issues. Under heterogeneous traffic conditions, vehicles of various kinds have varying physical and operational characteristics. In developing countries, driver behavior, vehicular characteristics (size, engine efficiency, and years of usage), and intersection geometric design vary significantly. The vehicle fleet is composed of heavy vehicles (HV), light motor vehicles (LMV), motor cycles/ scooters (MC/S), bicycles (BC) and human-drawn vehicles (HDV). These vehicles share the main carriageway without any physical or marked segregation. When there are vehicles of different types with varying static and dynamic characteristics, follow-the-lane discipline and the follow-the-leader concept become irrelevant. Under constraints of flow and space, small-sized vehicles try to move into the circulating area without following lane discipline. Also, HV forcibly merge into the circulating stream of traffic. These points reflect that the rule of priority is not respected under such a heterogeneous traffic condition. In these circumstances, the study of

Abstract The extensive use of mollusc shell as a versatile raw material is testament to its importance in prehistoric times. The consistent choice of certain species for different purposes, including the making of ornaments, is a direct representation of how humans viewed and exploited their environment. The necessary taxonomic information, however, is often impossible to obtain from objects that are small, heavily worked or degraded. Here we propose a novel biogeochemical approach to track the biological origin of prehistoric mollusc shell. We conducted an in-depth study of archaeological ornaments using microstructural, geochemical and biomolecular analyses, including ‘palaeoshellomics’, the first application of palaeoproteomics to mollusc shells (and indeed to any invertebrate calcified tissue). We reveal the consistent use of locally-sourced freshwater mother-of-pearl for the standardised manufacture of ‘double-buttons’. This craft is found throughout Europe between 4200–3800 BCE, highlighting the ornament-makers’ profound knowledge of the biogeosphere and the existence of cross-cultural traditions.
