arunneronthird asked:

any thoughts on adding a whitelist? for example, if i blacklist a show name to avoid discourse or spoilers with the filtering option but follow an artist from that fandom i cannot see their art

Answer: Hey, @arunneronthird!

We understand what you’re looking for! But adding an allowlist (on top of the existing blocklist) makes content filtering more complex—both in terms of engineering and how easy it is for users to learn and use.

At the moment, let’s say you follow an artist, and they post something with a tag in your blocklist. That post will still show on your feed, just with a cover on it. You can click on this cover to reveal the content. While you do need to take an extra click to enjoy this post, we think this is the easiest and the most straightforward solution to this issue—at least for now.

We will give this some thought, though. There may be a better, third way. If there is anything more to say on this question, you will find it here on WIP or over at @changes.

imetthedevil asked:

Hi there! ❤️

Can you please enable us to make multiple posts public instead of private? I have plenty of private posts that I need to make public all at once and I can't, I have to do it one by one which is unbelievably tedious! Can you please help?

Like we have the option to select multiple posts and make them private, please allow the opposite as well.

Answer: Hey there, @imetthedevil!

This is not a bad idea! We have several thoughts here.

On the one hand, if this was an easy thing to put together, and it might just be, we would like to do this just for feature parity. On the other hand, it is not clear how often this would be used. So we would be hesitant to commit to it while resources are stretched a little thin.

The problem we also have is just the sheer number of buttons there are in the toolbar. It might not fit to have even more.

That said, we will take a look into this when we get the time, so stay tuned on this one. Thanks for your question, and have a good day!

higherhell asked:

Hello there! I've been curious, particularly since the mutual/follower/etc indicators were added to notifs in the activity feed (love that btw) - is there a chance we could get a toggle in the post editor to limit a post's visibility to only mutuals or only followers or something like that? Or maybe a revamp of private blogs that allows them a few more perks, like receiving/making replies? I think it'd be great for folks who might want to share selfies or personal art with friends without necessarily showing the whole world. The recent addition of being able to turn off reblogs was a great tool in a similar vein, but I'd definitely love to see us given even more visibility controls like these.

Thanks for your hard work, and have a nice day! :)

Answer: Hello there, @higherhell!

This is admittedly incredibly complex to do, but it still might be worthwhile.

What we can say is that we would love for us to do this: to enable more private/small-group interactions. We have talked about it, possibly, as much as one billion times internally. It has been on our idea backlog before, and the good folks at the @labs blog are working in this direction. We would certainly hope to make it happen someday.

What we would also add is that the only workaround in the product right now is to create a private group blog, one with those people you want able to see the content you’re trying to share with them privately. That’s the best we can offer right now.

We may well get to this in the future. If so, you will find updates either here on WIP or over at @changes.

digitalisnarcissus asked:

The new Labs collection idea seems good, but I'm a bit concerned about the fact that similar user generated groupings on other sites have been used for abuse purposes. Will there be measures to mitigate this, such as notification, an option to remove yourself, report the collection etc.?

Answer: Hey there, @digitalisnarcissus!

We understand your concerns here, and, speaking frankly, we share them. This is why we are starting with an extremely limited volunteer-based test, which will be closely monitored. And, if anything goes untoward, we’ll take action on it swiftly.

It is for that reason that all of the above is being considered for the beta release, and we hope to learn even more from user feedback. And this is just why we want this kind of feedback early—so please do keep it coming!

macromemory asked:

I'm here to tell you guys how frustrating and stupid it is that you're now forcing people to have a Tumblr account in order to send an anonymous ask. This only hurts tumblr blogs, which are now dealing with less interactivity and fewer asks - which ultimately leads to less time being spent on tumblr - which leads to less ad revenue for you. Hope you reverse this idiotic decision soon.

Answer: Hello there, @macromemory!

Thanks for bringing this up with us, as it is an important point to address.

Unfortunately, as a result of the sheer amount of abuse people were receiving from anonymous asks, it was necessary to require a login. That’s the sad but unavoidable truth, and we aren’t going to roll that decision back. In truth, it is a decision we cannot roll back given the previous situation.

We ran the numbers, and actually, we see that anonymous ask traffic has stayed pretty much the same, despite the change. Hopefully, we only lost the really bad, negative anonymous asks in the process.

We want folks to feel safe on Tumblr. One of the ways we have tried to do this is that our ability to take action on people who send harmful anonymous asks is more important than the pure anonymity we used to provide.

We hope this helps, and thanks for your question.

significantfoliage asked:

Hey y'all! For reporting bots, is there any difference between reporting a spam post vs reporting the whole account as spam? When bots follow me, I report the account, but when there's spam in tags I follow, I report the post. Should I be reporting the account instead? Or in addition?

Answer: Hello, @significantfoliage!

A simple but potent answer for you: which is to report whatever you think is violating our community guidelines/policies—if it’s a post, report the post. If the whole blog is, then the whole blog. We can take it from there. Don’t overthink it. Just hit that report button, and we will take it from there.

This is an important question, so thank you for asking. Your feedback is appreciated, folks.

Best,

ihasafandom asked:

The logged out/page not found tumblr page displays a variety of moving images. Would it be possible to change that to still images since the moving ones are dangerous to epileptics et al?

Answer: Hey there, @ihasafandom!

Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention. You’re absolutely right! We want you to know we have got to work on this, and hope this will be a benefit to you and other users.

We have just shipped this change over the weekend. If you have “reduced motion” enabled, we no longer show the animated background image on the error pages.

Thanks for your feedback. And keep it on comin’…

thatscarletflycatcher asked:

It's somewhat common for some users now to come to a post, leave angry replies on it, and then block you so you cannot see what they said on your post, reply to it or even delete it. I don't have a suggestion as to how to solve this, but I think it is a problem that needs addressing. Perhaps something like letting OP see all replies to their post and delete, but not reply (?)

Answer: Hello, hello, @thatscarletflycatcher!

This is a very good question—only there is not a great deal we can say right now as work and discussion are still ongoing. However, what you should know is this: don’t worry, we hear you, and we’re working on it. We hope to tell you more very soon, and when we can, you’ll be the first to know.

Thanks for your question, and have a great day!

twilight-blaze asked:

any chance you could add an "only me" option to reblog controls? sometimes I'll post something personal that I don't want breaking containment but I still want to be able to add updates to later

Hey there, @twilight-blaze!

We like this idea, but I’m afraid we don’t think we’ll ever add this to that reblog controls dropdown, at least not for the foreseeable future. Because we think you can accomplish the same goal in a couple of other ways:

  • We suggest creating a private password-protected secondary blog instead and use that for anything you want to keep private.
  • Or you can choose “Post privately” when making your post on your main blog—that means only you can see it or anyone with the full post permalink URL!

We hope this helps, and thanks for your questions. Keep ’em coming!

the-lunar-warrior asked:

concept: a lil red skull (or really, any indication) next to usernames of people you have blocked, given their original posts are hidden to you, but if they are in a reblog chain, they are still there. this would stop me from trying to block people multiple times. also i think it would be funny. i rest my case

Why hey, @the-lunar-warrior!

When you’re right, you’re right. This is pretty funny. Nae, this tickled us.

As much as we like this idea, we’re afraid to say that we won’t be doing this. You could check out this post about how reblogs are stored for some indication as to why this would be tricky to do on Tumblr. However, it bears repeating that we love this idea and would hope that you could just manifest these little red warning skulls instead. Like little Hugo Weavings.
