The Bering Sea's position at the end of the global ocean "conveyor belt" and shoaling of nutrient rich water masses onto its broad shelf make the Eastern Bering Sea shelf one of the most productive regions of the polar oceans, with reported annual primary production rates of 150 to 500 gC*m-2 yr-1.
