The objective of this study is to explore and confirm the validity and reliability of the measurement instrument to determine the role of access to financing, relational capabilities and component of strategic orientations on SMEs performance in Nigeria. SMEs performance is paramount due to their significant contribution to employment and GDP. The issue of non-performance of SMEs and lack of empirical evidence on the role of strategic orientations on SMEs performance in emerging countries particularly Nigeria motivated the study.  Therefore, confirming the validity and reliability of the measurement items will remove doubts regarding the applicability and suitability of the instrument in another context. It will also stand as the guide for full scale research. The study employed a survey approach and collected 33 useable questionnaires from SMEs in Kano-based on systematic random sampling technique. The model examined five factors as a determinant of SMEs performance in Nigeria. Hen...

This research aims to examine the mediating role of the use of the e-commerce and moderating influence of entrepreneurial competencies on the performance of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The study data were collected via a structured questionnaire comprised of a seven-point Likert scale from practitioners serving at the top and middle-level positions in Pakistani SMEs. The Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) technique was applied on 250 useable returned questionnaires. The results showed that the association between the use of e-commerce and firm performance is positively significant. Moreover, the use of e-commerce mediates the positive association between technological readiness, adoption cost, and firm performance. However, the moderating role of entrepreneurial competencies does not appear as significant between the use of e-commerce and manufacturing SMEs’ performance. The present study is the first to explore entrepreneurial competencies as a m...

This study examines the relationship between demographic diversity in top management levels with a firms’ financial performance using 84 non-financial companies in Malaysia. Demographic diversity consists of ethnic diversity and gender diversity. The top management level includes both the top management team and the board of directors. This study uses data from 2008 to 2012. Return on assets measures the financial performance. Ethnic and gender diversity measured by the number of Non-Malays and the number of females in top management respectively. This study incorporates descriptive statistics, correlation testing, and regression analysis. The results show that ethnic diversity in the top management team as well as in a board of directors has no impact on firm performance (ROE). However, the results of gender diversity have a positive impact on performance (ROE) in both perspectives (TMTs and BODs).

Purpose: This paper shed light on this diversity at board level topic by conceptualizing the relationships as firm value and diverse board. Design/methodology/approach: Reasonable theoretical arguments drawn from Upper-echelon theory and agency theory suggest that board characteristics (gender diversity) may have either a positive, negative, or a neutral effect on the firm value. Bridging as gender diversity and Bonding has firm performance. To investigate this phenomenon relevant hypotheses are developed to test diversity at board level and its impact on firm value with the use of appropriate variables and measures. For this empirical work, the board of directors attributes and financial data used over the period 2009 to 2013. A total sample of large 60 top Malaysian listed companies is selected on the basis of their market capitalization. This study incorporates econometrics methodology on panel data analysis, which is used rigorously for hypothesis testing. Findings: The study revealed that Gender diversity has no significant impact on firm value. The results indicate that demographic diversity at board level does have a relationship with market value. Originality/value: Many governments seek to impose diversity in the boardroom, but the consequences of doing so are inconsistent and could decrease firm performance and economies. While extensive literature exists on diversity issues, this issue is still under debate and inconsistent results. Furthermore, there is a need to investigate this problem in a more holistic way and with rigorous statistical estimation. The paper attempts to fill the gap in the existing literature, discuss the empirically diverse corporate boards and impact on the firm performance. Introduction One of the vital issues for corporate boards of listed firms are its board composition. Corporate board is considered to be balanced if its board members come from various backgrounds, which benefits it to perform more effectively. Developing societal, political and cultural views at top

To date, many developing countries and Muslim nations those existing in poverty are incapable of contributing in local and international markets due to the lack of digitalisation knowledge, entrepreneurial skills and complete absence of supportive from Government institutions. For digitalisation enhancing innovations in developing countries and poverty presents unique challenges. E-commerce in layman's term refers to the activity of buying and selling over the Internet. Many young entrepreneurs and individual Islamic businesses have a website set up to catch up to technology and to advertise or promote their products. However, young entrepreneurs do not employ an e-commerce solution. This paper aims to develop simplicity to create an e-commerce store to allow and to sell products over the Internet. In addition, young entrepreneurship development from an Islamic perspective. The proposed solution includes extracting the product information available to the user and then set up a generic secure e-commerce prototype aim to store information from existing non-e-commerce website selling products. The prototype designed in this provides standard features of a common online store, shopping cart and payment solutions. A mobile version of the online store is also designed for further easing the process of purchasing products for the customer as mobile computing is on the rise and people are getting more and more reliable on their smartphone to perform various tasks. This paper emphasises the need for young entrepreneurs to understand digitalisation as an integral part of the dynamic business sustainability nexus and the new global business equation. The proposed tool is helpful for the government, policymaker, potential young entrepreneurs and others existing entrepreneurs of Muslim countries, Islamic scholars and academicians.

Sustainable development plays a vital role in information and communication technology. In times of pandemics such as COVID-19, vulnerable people need help to survive. This help includes the distribution of relief packages and materials by the government with the primary objective of lessening the economic and psychological effects on the citizens affected by disasters such as the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there has not been an efficient way to monitor public funds’ accountability and transparency, especially in developing countries such as Nigeria. The understanding of public emotions by the government on distributed palliatives is important as it would indicate the reach and impact of the distribution exercise. Although several studies on English emotion classification have been conducted, these studies are not portable to a wider inclusive Nigerian case. This is because Informal Nigerian English (Pidgin), which Nigerians widely speak, has quite a different vocabulary from Stand...

This paper examines the moderating impact of capital structure on the relationship between government subsidy, strategic profitability and financial strength of state-owned enterprises in Indonesia. A purposive sampling is used and data were collected from seven state-owned enterprises over the period of 2005 to 2016. The empirical evidence provided by this paper indicates that government subsidy has a significant negative impact on the financial strength, which means that the state-owned enterprises are difficult to manage the company independently if the government continues to provide subsidies or additional capital. This study also found that strategic profitability has a significant positive impact on the financial strength, which means there are opportunities for management to perform profitability practice of earnings management as strategic to enhance the level of financial strength of the company. However, capital structure is strengthening the relations of ‘government subs...

PurposeThis paper aims to examine the demographic diversity at top-level management and its impact on the performance of Malaysian-listed companies. In addition, Muslim diversity on corporate boards is examined. Design/methodology/approachAlthough many organisations aspire to be socially diverse, diversity’s consequences for organisational performance remain unclear. This study specifies the whole distinct mechanism and measures it independently, bridging as the demographic diversity among the board of directors (BODs) and bonding as the firm’s financial performance. To maintain the homogeneity factor, the empirical analysis has been confined to 12 fully fledged sectors and 529 Malaysian listed firms out of 798 firms selected on the basis of judgmental sampling during the period of 2013. The paper applies the correlation matrix and linear regression model to justify this phenomenon. FindingsThe empirical findings suggest that gender diversity (Muslim and Non-Muslim women) is positiv...

Though the significant impact of SMEs to economic growth and development of a nation is well established, still SMEs contribute little to the economic activities in Nigeria. The SMEs poor contribution to GDP and employment indicates their underperformance. To address this underperformance, several studies recommended access to capital to moderate the relationship between components of strategic orientations and SMEs performance. Accordingly, the main objective of this paper is to determine the moderating effect of access to capital on the relationship between market orientations, learning orientation, entrepreneurial orientation and SMEs performance in Nigeria. A theoretical model, based on theoretical bases from the resources based viewed is proposed linking entrepreneurial, market, learning orientation and SMEs performance. Theoretical contributions and further research suggestion are also deliberated.

Career selection for many especially for students is a crucial process. Previous studies show that job seeker chose career either based on income, academic qualification or the benefit that may gain. This study was conducted among final year BAET students taking project management course at Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology (UniKL MIAT) to identify MCDM used by students in selecting a career. Students are distributed into small groups (between four to five members). Contrary to other earlier studies-whereby a list of criteria and scale range used for criteria are given, this study allowed students to figure out the list of criteria and scale range to be used for comparison based on their discussion within their own group. Students were also allowed to set their own range of scale for comparing the criteria and alternatives. The criteria were then analyzed using Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method to identify the chosen career by students. The h...

Abstract The paper investigates and compares different groups of customers (stayers and switchers) in terms of antecedents of customer loyalty in the telecommunications (telecom) sector, specifically, customer satisfaction, perceived service quality, perceived price fairness, perceived justice in service recovery, and relational bonds. The data were analyzed through the PLS-SEM Approach. The results revealed significant differences between both groups (i.e., stayers and switchers) in their sense of loyalty antecedents. These differences impact the performance of the telecommunications sector in economic, environmental, and social terms. However, the study revealed no difference between stayers and switchers perceptions of service quality. Our research makes a significant theoretical contribution to the consumer behavior literature by comparing stayers and switchers in the telecommunications sector. Moreover, the study has also offered various practical contributions for managers and practitioners to devise value-based strategies for both groups.

ABSTRACT This study seeks to examine the relationship between ethnic diversity among board members and market value of listed firms in Malaysia. Ethnic diversity is defined as the number of non-bumiputra (Chinese, Indian) on the board of directors. The concept of value-in-diversity argues that a diverse workforce is beneficial for business organization. Diverse members of boards enhance the overall performance of the organization. Literature shows that there is ambiguity among previous researches. The results seem to be inconsistent. There is a need to investigate this issue in a more holistic way. This research is unique and first of its kind that consider the relationship between ethnic diversity on boards with market value. The results indicate that ethnic diversity does have an impact on market value, but they are inversely correlated. The results also indicate that the proportion of non-bumiputra on boards tends to increase with the increasing members on board. However, ethnic diversity is negatively associated with market performance. The outcomes of the research help to shareholders, and other stakeholders, including the potential investors and policy makers to understand the significance of ethnic diversity at top level management.

Nowadays; the adoption of Internet of things (IoT) technologies and applications in everyday is rising. IoT technology such as Near Field Communication (NFC) is vastly adopted due to its short range frequencies, making it a good candidate for token based security access control applications such as door systems and attendance systems. However, due to the miniature size of NFC tags; its clear text contents and unprotected communication channel between tag-reader-database; NFC technology is prone to security attacks such as the man in the middle; denial of services (DOS) and etc. These attacks lead to leakage of user critical data which could impact any organization adopting NFC applications and technologies. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) are the cornerstone for sustainable development, but if they are not appropriately managed, they will impede progress towards the United Nations Global Sustainable Development Goals. Among undesirable impacts, emphasis must be put on the risk of information security (ISec) breaches, as they pose a potential threat to businesses there. Especially for publicly traded firms, they could create a long-lasting influence on their financial performance and, thus, stock investors’ confidence. Following the efficient market hypothesis’s footsteps, previous studies have examined only the short-run impact on investors’ confidence ensuing to ISec breach announcements. Therefore, this study investigates the long-run impact of ISec breach announcements on investors’ confidence. Based on a sample of 73 ISec breach announcements during 2011–2019, this paper examines the impact on investors’ confidence, as demonstrated by long-run abnormal returns and...

The range of possibilities opened up by big data technologies offers companies in all sectors a remarkable opportunity for development and transformation. And if the majorities are convinced of its strategic interest, many are wondering about the implementation of such a project. Today, companies using big data are search engines like Google; social networks like Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn; e-commerce websites like eBay, Ali Baba, or Amazon, etc. But, it would be premature to conclude that big data is reserved for large companies only and that they alone can gain added value from its use. Indeed, as the motorist uses the highway without having built it, the commercial or public organizations, whatever their size and their field of interests, will be able to benefit from the use of big data.

Industry 4.0 enables technological trends like Big Data Analytics and Machine Learning techniques to converge into and merge with traditional manufacturing processes, resulting in smart manufacturing. Smart manufacturing techniques leverage the use of Industrial Internet of things (IIoT) technology using IoT sensors that are fitted on physical assets to enhance manufacturing processes. IoT Sensors enable smart manufacturing facilities capable of autonomously exchanging information, which can be used to drive business decisions more accurately. Businesses that adopt Smart manufacturing techniques lead to a competitive advantage for these firms as they can bring in higher profit margins, reduced maintenance costs, energy savings, and better-quality products. This study proposes an architecture for IIoT based predictive maintenance. A case study from ancillary automobile industry is presented to demonstrate a predictive model for predicting sudden breakdown in industrial machines, thereby enabling the production and maintenance cycle to be ‘smart.’

Abstract This paper investigates the literary corpus on the role of human resources in non-financial reporting pursuant to EU Directive 2014/95/EU. It provides a quantitative overview of the academic literature that constitutes this field, discussing whether the entry into force of the directive in 2017 on social and environmental issues extends and deepens the dissemination of human resources as a lever for sustainability. A bibliometric analysis was conducted on a database containing 108 publications in English language with a publication date from 2013 to 2019. The findings show that research published on non-financial reporting per the Directive focuses on performance, trust, and quality of disclosure in terms of social and environmental issues, while the human resources discussed in the Directive are still under investigation. Besides, considering that the Directive is in line with the 2030 Agenda, the findings also outline the existing literary framework on the and sustainability reports and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The article contributes to the existing literature systematizing the studies on the topic. It represents a start point for the scholars to develop future research on non-financial disclosure focused on human resources and related sustainable practices adopted by companies as key factors for sustainable organizations towards SDGs.
