During a six week field season in May and June of 2011, the Karnak Hypostyle Hall Project began to record inscriptions on the columns and abacus blocks of the building. This consisted of detailed collation of earlier records of the abacus blocks made by Ricardo Caminos in the 1950s and systematic photography of all the abaci facets in situ and of those now lying in the block yards. Many of the abaci have palimpsest inscriptions of erased Sety I or early Ramesses II inscriptions replaced by later Ramesses II reliefs. Orthogonal images of a representative sample of abaci facets were made in the block yards and from our scaffolding. Theodolite measurements of abaci facets and wall reliefs were also taken and a successful experiment was made to make a conventional photograph into an orthogonal one using the software program Redresseur. Collation of early sketches of the column scenes by Harold Nelson yielded a wealth of new epigraphic data, including palimpsest inscriptions on some of t...

Defined as "an auxiliary science to History that studied the inscriptions on enduring substances", the epigraphy calls for very varied methods and disciplines. These all imply a preliminary operation : the survey and the copy of the decors engraved or painted on walls, columns, etc. This stage is essential to understand and to reconstitute the ancient monuments, because cartouche friezes and ritual episodes give information on the date of the temple or on the nature of the activities that took place in the temple. Nowadays, epigraphic surveys are still for the most part done in a traditional handmade fashion, while computer-aided epigraphic surveying is only used for simple tasks, such as drawing the contour of hieroglyphic signs on scanned photographs. The epigraphy of a monument consists of scenes (low-relief) and texts. In the two cases, the hieroglyphic signs engraved are constituted of complex segments and curves, which must be accurately surveyed and recorded. Each h...

In fact, the epigraphic survey of Egyptian temples is essential to understand and to reconstitute these ancient monuments, and hieroglyphic engravings of columns are as important as the scen es that appear on walls. Columns often bear cartouche friezes an d ritual episodes that give information on the date of the temp le or on the nature of the activities that took place in its hypos tyle hall. Furthermore, th...

article deals with the virtual restitution of a 13 m high column standing initially inside the Great Hypostyle Hall of the Pharaonic temple at Karnak in Egypt. A dozen of the original 134 columns are incomplete and three of them have entirely disappeared. Hundreds of loose drums belonging to those columns are scattered all over the archaeological site; we have been able to identify most of them, making it now possible to rebuild the missing columns. Since these blocks are heavy and very difficult to move around, the decision was made to reconstruct the columns in a virtual environment. In order to do so, we have created a 3D model of the blocks by means of photogrammetric processing, with the help of specific tools that we have developed for this task.
