This work has conducted an analysis of Spanish Communication journals in terms of their level of internationalization and the collaborative models used by their authors, by assessing 1,182 articles published between 2007 and 2011 in the seven top-rated Communication journals according to a set of six quality indicators. The ultimate goal has been to perform a data processing in order to detect the degree of inclination of international authors to publish their works in Spanish journals in the years covered by this study. Secondly, the study draws a profile of co-author ship patterns focused on geographical and institutional alliances. The results show there is no clear and convincing signs of evolution towards a desired level of internationality. Concerning co-authorship, although the results indicate a willingness on the part of authors to chart a path of wider geographical and institutional collaboration, unique au thorship continues to be the preferred form of publication. Nanoscience and nanotechnology are two key areas in the development of new technologies. However, scientific advances in these fields are still far removed from the contents taught in schools. But what if basic concepts within these areas were introduced in secondary schools? We believe science is an essential facet of culture and the most recent scientific advances should be within everyone’s reach. With this in mind, we have developed and tested an educational toolkit to transfer complex scientific concepts in classrooms. The toolkit is based on design and creative thinking methodologies, and graphene is used as an example of a subject that is challenging to communicate within the area of nanoscience. This paper highlights the development of the toolkit and it being tested out in a secondary school by 93 students between the ages of 11 and 13. The testing was carried out through the creation of a workshop called “Graphene in the Classroom.” We determined five evaluation categories...

This paper analyses the adoption of new information and communication technologies (ICTs) by Spanish journalists specialising in science. Applying an ethnographic research model, this study was based on a wide sample of professionals, aiming to evaluate the extent by which science journalists have adopted the new media and changed the way they use information sources. In addition, interviewees were asked whether in their opinion the Web 2.0 has had an impact on the quality of the news. The integration of formats certainly implies a few issues for today’s newsrooms. Finally, with the purpose of improving the practice of science information dissemination, the authors put forward a few proposals, namely: Increasing the training of Spanish science journalists in the field of new technologies; Emphasising the accuracy of the information and the validation of sources; Rethinking the mandates and the tasks of information professionals.

ABSTRACT Spanish press handling of the swine flu crisis of 2009 was explored by studying front pages and editorials for the El Pais, El Mundo, La Vanguardia, El Periódico and Avui newspapers over a period of 8 weeks. Major ethical issues arising during media coverage were identified, notably the use of scaremongering and sensationalist stratagems. The analysis revealed discrepancies between front page information and editorial stance. Specifically, front pages depicted a situation of alarm liable to generate social panic, whereas editorials tended to play down the crisis and complied rigorously with ethical and social responsibility criteria.

Both design processes and the role of the designer in society are in constant transformation. Designers are involved in increasingly complex problems, performing tasks that go beyond technical perspectives and production processes. This means that education must prepare design and engineering students for an uncertain future. Within this context, design skills and creativity are considered tools that allow designers to meet the future challenges and requirements of education and the design profession. The starting point for this research is the definition of what current designers do to successfully perform the role they play in the field of design. An online survey has been created to compile data on these competences at an international scale, as well as a methodology to analyse them in the classroom. These tools were used in a class with 105 students and in two case studies with a small design company and a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO). The analysis tools were created and ...

Graphene is the first two-dimensional material discovered by humans. It was isolated for the first time in 2004 and is being established as a revolutionary material for the 21st century. This study presents an analysis of the quantitative and qualitative contents from all news about graphene published online in The New York Times (United States), The Guardian (United Kingdom), and El Pais (Spain) from October 2004 to October 2017. We evaluate the media’s coverage of a new, revolutionary material such as graphene in terms of the volume of news items per year and the authorship and treatment, thematic focus, and content of the articles—from both a quantitative and a qualitative perspective. This analysis offers insights into the knowledge transfer about graphene and can serve as a model to the materials science communication field.

The rapid speed of technological advances, communication and the current market are constantly questioning the role of designers in society [2]. This context leads to novel questions about design students’ curricular profile in the 21st century. Nowadays and following the Bologna Plan, education is changing its focus from acquiring information to learning how to use this information competently, which involves an evolution from ""being"" and ""knowing"" to ""knowing how to do"" [8]. At the same time, competency assessment is becoming increasingly present in the field of design where competencies are considered a differential factor among professionals [7]. One of the most outstanding aspects in the study of competencies is the revaluation of creativity as a key factor in employability and the management of an uncertain future [3]. This article defines the competencies that current and future creative professionals must deve...

The communication of science is an essential facet of society. However, connections between scientists and the general public are difficult to generate. Furthermore, traditional communication formats do not offer the possibility of assessing real understanding of complex concepts by society. This research presents a case study aimed at evaluating the communication of scientific knowledge through design methodologies. For this purpose, we designed and carried out a participatory workshop for non-scientists involving graphene—a highly attractive scientific topic presently. The discipline of design provided the necessary methods and tools to generate a dynamic experience that fostered the communication of graphene, its properties, and its applications. The results revealed that design methodologies were a suitable tool for achieving a successful transfer of scientific knowledge. Participants were satisfied with the experience and the methodologies enhanced interest, motivation, participation, and understanding. This case study aims to be an example of how design methodologies can transmit science effectively. We encourage other designers to apply the methods presented in this paper in other scientific fields.

This article tries to study the relationship between iournalists and politicians in critical situations. The writers have analyzed the information broadcast by the television networks in Spain: Televisión Española, Antena 3 and Tele 5 on March 2004 11th, 12th and 13th, just after the terrorist attack in Madrid. From this study research, it has been concluded that the journalists had little critical capacity, they were in collusion with the politicians, spreading certain badly argued theses and subject maner, using unwarranted expressions.

Graphene, its first isolation and its nanoscale properties, has changed the paradigm established by the laws of physics and opened the door to new, previously unheard of industrial applications. Graphene has also been a turning point in nanoscience and nanotechnology, which has led to the creation of many technology centers dedicated to this field. Currently these materials are being studied in scientific communities, but most companies and individuals still do not know about their existence and/or potential. Our main objective is to fuse this scientific and technological knowledge with the main market and industry sectors (construction, food, energy, transport, and health) through design methodologies. For this purpose, we have carried out a case study using design thinking strategies to achieve understanding and innovation. This case study consisted of five “Graphene Days,” each of which was related to a different sector. These days consisted of a series of lectures in the morning, followed by a creative workshop to innovate with graphene in the afternoon. They made it possible for scientists to connect with businesspeople and transfer knowledge and exchanges between both worlds. From a design point of view, these sessions generated sectoral maps that reflect new opportunities for graphene in the market, and foreshadow the future of this nanotechnology. The method is applicable to other fields of science and technology and this paper reflects evidence of the importance of design methodologies for science, technology, and industry communication.

We examine how Catalan election campaigns have evolved to postmodernization, a concept coined by Pippa Norris to refer to the current political scenario and how this is reflected in different electoral phases. We analyzed four electoral campaigns covering a decade (2003-2012) through 27 face-to-face in-depth interviews conducted with campaign managers for nine political parties. The results indicate that, although Catalan politics is progressing toward the postmodern phase, there are still aspects that are far from fully adapted to the changes affecting all levels of society. Catalan political parties seem to be more comfortable with modern or classical political approaches—such as control over traditional media—and are but slowly reacting to other issues such as citizen demands for more access to, and prominence in, politics.

Spanish press handling of the swine flu crisis of 2009 was explored by studying front pages and editorials for the El Pais, El Mundo, La Vanguardia, El Periódico and Avui newspapers over a period of 8 weeks.

The research presented in this article analyzes the perception of the project of a new Statute of Catalonia in the Spanish press. The study has been made from the analysis of the editorials and the front pages published in twelve newspapers of all the State between October 1 st and December 15 th , 2005. The project of new Statute of Catalonia induced a overdimensioned debate that converted Media into an authentic «political arena», a public locus where Media and politicians displayed multiple cooperative or competitive ideological strategies. The article concludes that the new Statute suffered a severe rejection in the majority of newspapers, especially in some of the national ones, and tries to observe the differences between these 12 newspapers. The research also dissects the strong and weak points of the project in the analyzed newspapers.

Using interviews and questionnaires, we explored the perceptions and attitudes of 49 Spanish science journalists regarding pseudoscience. Pseudoscience, understood as false knowledge that endeavours to pass as science, is a controversial and complex matter that potentially poses a risk to society. Given that concern over this issue has grown in recent years in Spain, our aim was to evaluate how pseudoscience operates in journalistic practice in Spanish media. Our data reveal not only a lack of editorial policies in regard to pseudoscience, but also the existence of a significant number of science journalists who make light of the potential threat implied by the pseudosciences in the media. Some journalists point to the lack of scientific training of editors and media managers as one of the reasons for the proliferation of the pseudosciences.

Science journalists are mainly responsible for publicly communicating science, which, in turn, is a major indicator of the social development of democratic societies. The transmission of quality scientific information that is rigorously researched and understandable is therefore crucial, and demand for this kind of information from both governments and citizens is growing. We analyzed the academic profiles of a representative sample of practicing science journalists in Spain to clarify what training they had received and how they perceived the quality and scope of this training. Using an ethnographic methodology based on a survey, in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with science journalists working for the main Spanish media (mainly printed press, audiovisual, Internet and news agencies), we analyze their academic backgrounds and collect information on their opinions and proposals. Our findings depict a complex and heterogeneous scenario and also reveal that most science...
