YouTube is a Web 2.0 platform of distributed video sharing, widely used by students, universities... more YouTube is a Web 2.0 platform of distributed video sharing, widely used by students, universities and scholars. This article looks into the YouTube channels set by three scholars - Dave Cormier, Wendy Drexler and Michael Wesch -, whose research interests are linked to technology enhanced learning. The focus of analysis is on the sample of videos each scholar uploaded and categorized as "education" in their YouTube channels. The data collected from the content analysis allows to understand what content is being shared and with what approach. The overall results suggest that those scholars who have a channel as personal, or as officially linked to the university, share videos produced as a result of their work as scholars, some of which even share copyright with the institution. All the videos address similar concepts and ideas regarding the integration and use of technology in education, but the approach to present them differs.

Aiming to characterize the way Portuguese Public Higher Education Institutions use Communication ... more Aiming to characterize the way Portuguese Public Higher Education Institutions use Communication Technologies (CTs), the on-going project at University of Aveiro TRACER will apply a national online survey, therefore developing a prior pilot-study undertaken with validation purposes. This paper describes and summarizes part of the work developed within the pilot-survey, which includes a theoretical review outlining the context of CTs use and its impact on teacher training. First results of the pilot-study, which included four institutions, will be used to present institutional perspectives about CT use. The responses cannot be generalized as wide-reaching statements, but they already reveal that higher education institutions are making an effort to bring together policies and practices. This paper presents an overview on the goals of LIBE project, and the results of a content analysis of focus groups carried out in Portugal. Focus groups performed to hear the voices of teachers, trainers and students young low achievers about the key competences and skills for young low achievers. The Portuguese results will integrate the alignment of the proposal of the framework of the learning outcomes, instructional objectives and ICT key information processing competencies of LIBE e-learning courses, and plan its pedagogical in alignment with actual needs of the low achievers. During times of high unemployment, in some countries, employers reported shortages of basic skills (literacy, numeracy, problem solving in technology-rich environments). This problematic is the focus of the European project LIBE, aiming to offer innovative and effective e-learning solutions with specific focus on digital competences in order to aid European countries dealing with this issue. This paper presents the common framework for LIBE, assisting the definition of key-terms, competences and skills that will be the core support to create and implement the elearning solutions based on current needs of education and training for low achievers. The goal is to increase social equity, promote citizenship and improve employability and access to labor market at a European level.

The project was carried out between 2011 and 2014 and its main results are a consolidated proposal of an analysis model to address the use of Communication Technologies in Higher Education institutions, as well as the U-TRACER® tool. This Web-based tool provides support to the process of collecting, processing, and deployment of data related with the use of Communication Technologies in a specific Higher Education or in a group of institutions, based on institutional or geographical criteria.

This paper presents a review and analysis of some Higher Education Institution Information Visualization online tools, according to an up-to-date theoretical framework. This chapter presents and discusses best practices and future trends in the use of Communication ... more This chapter presents and discusses best practices and future trends in the use of Communication Technologies (CT) in Portuguese public Higher Education Institutions (HEI), from a literature review between 2008 and 2013, triangulated with the opinion of Higher Education teachers, using interviews. This contribution emerges from the project “TRACER—Portuguese Public Higher Education Use of Communication Technologies”, which aims to contribute towards the characterization of HEI according to their adoption and use of CT in educational contexts.
The literature review reports best practices, although with different approaches, such as the frequency and satisfaction of using CT as learning support, the design of teaching strategies, the roles and responsibilities of students and teachers, among others. Current trends indicate the progressive integration of CT, namely Web 2.0 and LMS/VLE tools, in teaching and learning processes, containing a potential for innovation, as well as motivation. Future trends are related to the increasing use of CT for educational processes, highlighting the growing incorporation of mobile devices, used at the service of collaboration between educational actors. Training for the pedagogical use of CT is stated as relevant, considering the fast technological change and principles advocated by the Bologna Process.

U-TRACER is a tool aiming to give visibility to the data collected within project TRACER, data co... more U-TRACER is a tool aiming to give visibility to the data collected within project TRACER, data concerning the use of Communication Technologies in Portuguese Public Higher Education Institutions. Data was provided by institutions and its teachers, through two online questionnaires. The dissemination of the data is done through U-TRACER tool which adopts information visualization solutions, allowing interaction with the information in order to generate graphical results according to the interests of the users. The tool consists of two main areas, the Backoffice (BO) prepared to collect data, and the Frontoffice area (FO) which gives visibility to data collected in BO. The conceptualization of the FO was developed with the participation of higher education professionals in focus groups, testing the reading effectiveness of the graphs and the usability testing of the U-Tracer prototype. These tests resulted in the proposal of interaction features and visual displays, including recommendations for the improvement to the BO and FO. Participants who tested the U- TRACER reported being overall satisfied with the tool, however suggesting improvements which are to be implemented. The limited number of information visualization tools that display information about higher education institutions, justifies the interest of the U-TRACER which joins other pioneering projects such as U-MAP and U-Multirank that also involve collection and representation of data provided by HE institutions, making them public and accessible through an information visualization web platform.
