From a multimodal point of view, the functions which have generally been attributed to linguistic elements of discourse (known, as a rule, as discourse markers or connectors within the several discourse analytic theories) can also be fulfilled by prosody and nonverbal units. These types of discourse functions, here called interactive conversational signals, a subgroup of the conversational signals, will be analyzed from a multimodal perspective. Thus, after identifying the different units of analysis - i.e. linguistic, non-linguistic, prosodic and nonverbal - a few minutes of a recorded face-to-face interaction between three Portuguese students will be micro-analysed. The micro-analysis consists in the prosodic transcription of the corpus, in the description of the body movements of the interaction partners, as well as in the identification of the verbal and nonverbal units they produce. Finally, considering the coordination between the segmented multimodal units, their conver- sati...

Ingles: the paper has two aims. 1. To exemplify, through repair strategies, how a multimodal analysis of face to face interaction can be achieved. 2. To demonstrate how speaker and hearer choose and use different forms of verbal and non-verbal means based on their ability to fit them the best they can to the satisfaction of their communicative purposes. Key words: face-to-face interaction; verbal and non-verbal communication; multimodality; conversation. Palavras-chave: Interaccao face a face; Comunicacao verbal e nao-verbal; Multimodalidade; Conversacao.

In this study, we aim to disentangle pantomime from early signs in a newly-born sign language: Sao Tome and Principe Sign Language. Our results show that within 2 years of their first contact with one another, a community of 100 participants interacting everyday was able to build a shared language. The growth of linguistic systematicity, which included a decrease in use of pantomime, reduction of the amplitude of signs and an increase in articulation economy, showcases a learning, and social interaction process that constitutes a continuum and not a cut-off system. The human cognitive system is endowed with mechanisms for symbolization that allow the process of arbitrariness to unfold and the expansion of linguistic complexity. Our study helps to clarify the role of pantomime in a new sign language and how this role might be linked with language itself, showing implications for language evolution research.

s In order to explain a proposal for a theoretical framework for a holistic micro-analysis of verbal and nonverbal modalities, a micro-analysis of a parenthesis in a face-to-face interaction between three Portuguese participants will be presented. In this analysis both verbal and nonverbal signals were described in relation to each other and classified according to their interactional functions. In other words, various kinds of nonverbal communication, movements and positions of body, head, eyes, face, arms and hands will be analyzed not only regarding their form and semiotics, but also their multiple functions in relation to speech production/reception – which includes words, prosody, and what is beyond it: participants expectations, attitudes, motivations and relation to each other. Besides, this example will emphasize the importance of when and where a movement is made and what it means in interaction, independently of its idiosyncratic aspects. The moment and the function of eac...

In face to face interaction speech is accompanied by gestures and movements of several parts of the body. These are important cues to the interpretation of the message intended by the speaker /hearer. They can reinforce, complete, contradictor even substitute verbalized ideas. Furthermore, together with prosody (i. e., variations of tone, intensity and articulation rate), movements of several parts of the body also give  information about the emotional state of the interactants, about their expectations, feelings and attitudes towards each other. In this way, whenever someone indicates for instance apath, hecandraw its orientation and bends with a gesture, although he does not express these properties in words. Based on the theory of Conversational Analysis, I intendt of ocus on the importance of speech accompanying body movements in message transmission and to emphasise the necessity of considering them in ethnographic films.  Key words: Multimodal Communication; Conversation Analy...

: In Mozambique and Cape Verde, writing in Portuguese by African women has directly engaged political reconstruction by denouncing colonial oppression and embracing national freedom. This article addresses the recent history of Lusophone African women's fiction, which has been pivotal in inscribing the intimate arena of sexuality and motherhood into power relations and has also revealed ways in which the domain of violence intersects with private lives. By focusing on two novels that exemplify this trend, this article demonstrates links between the political and the intimate. It also shows how Lusophone African authors contribute to healing social conflict through their narratives, and draws some conclusions about gender relations in the Lusophone African experience and across the continent.

Following a linguistic approach of gesture studies, this paper presents a case that bears witness to the robustness of gesture. It describes a listing procedure, recurrent in discourse organization , which consists in the production of a sequence of units characterised by syntactic, prosodic and gestual parallelism. In this example the speaker (a victim of Thalidomide) has no upper limbs, but he gesticulates with his feet. The analysis of the modalities involved in the listing activity will show that feet gestures can assume the functions performed by manual gestures. The example points out not only the tight link between gesture and speech, but also the embodiment of the listing activity, resulting from the necessity to index ideas or objects to the real world.

this pilot study focuses on aspects of cultural variation in cospeech gestures in two interactions with Angolan and European Portuguese participants. The elements compared are gesture features - extension, drawn path, articulation points - and generated gesture spaces. Posture, interpersonal distance and other speech-correlated movements were taken into account as essential parameters for the definition of different kinds of physical spaces. Some differences were obvious: gestures performed by Angolan speakers were articulated at the levels of the shoulders, elbows and wrists, thus tracing considerable larger angles than those traced by Portuguese speakers. As the Angolan participants sit close to one another, their extended arms constantly invade the other participant's personal spaces.

Based on a case study, this article explores multimodal deixis – the ensemble gesture-speech deixis – in European Portuguese. Various forms of pointing gestures will be identified and correlated to simultaneous speech, giving account of the different types of deixis and of the kind of reference established by deictic elements. In the description of the modalities which assume the function of “pointing at”, the following co-textual and contextual aspects were considered: the relevance of indicating an object, a place, a space, a person or an abstract idea; the need for precision in pointing; speaker’s expectations regarding hearer’s knowledge about the referents.
