This is the text of my presentation at the “International Symposium: Literary Hotels” (9-10 September 2021, Hub Athens), organized by the HOTEMS project (“Hotels and the Modern Subject: 1890-1940”). My presentation was part of the panel “Crime à la Moderne: Memory, Perception, and Mobility in Hotel Crime Narratives” (Friday, September 10). The text is accompanied by a basic bibliography in the form of footnotes and also by pictures, which were included in the pptx. file shown in the presentation.
The crime novel "The Hands of Aphrodite" (1963) by Giannis Maris is under examination, more specifically the sociopolitical and cultural components of the representations of the hotels and motels in the novel's narration. In the "Hands of Aphrodite", police officer Giorgos Mpekas, the protagonist of most of Maris' novels, tries to solve a case that involves not only the memories but also the perpetrators and the victims of the Holocaust in Greece. The criminals participate in a treasure hunt around Greece and the defenders of the law subsequently try to catch them. As a result, all the main characters stay in hotels and motels. Thus, in this crime novel the development of leisure industry in Greece during the 1960s is interwinded with the memory and the censorship of the Greek Holocaust, through the structural and style characteristics and conventions of the crime fiction, especially the noir and spy fiction subgenres, but also the succesful and popular direction of historical crime fiction.

Although many academic scholars in the fields of literature and history, especially from the 90s onwards, have shown an advanced interest for 19th century Greek popular novel, popular literature of the 20th century remains a little-researched academic field. More specifically, the flourishing era of the 50s and the 60s is still unexplored. During that period, popular press in Greece developed and was organized, mainly via magazines and booklets oriented to children and teenagers. So, in this case, the reflection about popular literature is combined with the problematic on children literature. But, popular and children’s fiction have a long and parallel presence in Modern Greek cultural history, which dates back before the 19th century.
In this study, we make a spherical presentation of the Greek popular magazines for children and teenagers during the 50s and the 60s. Therefore, the intertextual analysis of the fictional characters is connected with the social, political and economic aspects of the magazines: the reactions of intellectuals, the ecclesiastical circles and the main political forces of that time; the dominant and versatile influence of American popular culture on the Greek press, music and cinema; above all, the readership’s identity and mindset.
Note: This article is already uploaded as an unpublished work in the Academia website. However, this is the article's "official" version in Belphégor magazine, managed by LPCM (Littérature Populaire et Culture Médiatique).

The International Crime Fiction Research Group is glad to present a new online exhibition hosted on the Omeka-based online database “Visualising Crime Fiction,” sponsored by the AHRC (the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council) and the Universities of Belfast, Limoges, and Debrecen, in partnership with the Bilipo. A Brief History of Crime Fiction in Greece was authored by Nikos Filippaios, currently a PhD student at the University of Ioannina, and provides a concise outline of the development of the genre in this country, with particular attention to the impact of international crime fiction on the local creative industries.
Filippaios starts his overview by stressing the success of the earliest translations of modern popular fiction that arrived from Western Europe in the second half of the 19th century. He then highlights the key transformations of crime narratives in Greece throughout the 20th century, and particularly up to the 1980s, when a new generation of local writers started to use the genre to investigate the troubled national history during the post-war era.

A comparison between the two editions of the novel "Pragmatognosia" written by Nikos Gavriil Pentzikis. The first edition was held in 1950 and the second one in 1977. Pentzikis revised the original text, by making some seemingly small changes, which however are worthy of a more detailed and deeper analysis.

Argument:
From the beginning of the 2010s, a new and increasingly spreading phenomenon had been observed in the Greek-speaking websites. A growing community of webpages, blogs, social media groups and fora are dedicated to the recollection and revival of Greek popular literature of the 20th century, namely the prosperous tradition of pulp magazines and dime novels, especially the ones that were directed exclusively to children and teenagers . These internet gatherings have been created and are being operated by amateur researchers, old writers, publishers and even more by old readers, who nowadays are on the average age of 45 to 65 years. Thus, most of these internet communities focus on the popular literature from 1950s to 1970s.
However, it is very interesting that Greek academia still shows a remarkable indifference or even more an underestimation for this rich material of indigenous popular literature of the 20th century, especially for its second half. More specifically, Greek academics seem to leave these current internet communities underutilized.
Therefore, in my announcement I would like to discuss the diverse and sometimes contradictory role of these online communities dedicated to popular literature in Greece. More particularly, my aim is to present and interpret this plexus between childhood nostalgia and amateur historiography, a representative phenomenon not only of digital public history, but also of current popular culture.
Sources:
- The various webpages, blogs, fora and social media groups and pages dedicated to the past periods of Greek popular literature and Press.
- Interviews with people who participate on these internet communities. They can be classified in three categories:
i. Amateur scholars and journalists
ii. Retired professionals in the field of popular publishing industry (writers, translators, publishers)
ii. Old readers
- The publishing revival of popular literature magazines and books, which is carried out during the last five years.
Theoretical Framework:
The concept developed by Svetlana Boym, about the contradiction between two types of nostalgia, the restorative and the reflective one. Although the nostalgia in our occasion contains the idealization of the restorative type, is mainly reflective, because “this type of nostalgic narrative is ironic, inconclusive, and fragmentary” [Boym, Svetlana, “Nostalgia and its Discontents”, The Hedgehog Review, summer (2007): 7-18]
A combination between oral history and digital history studies. These two academic fields focus on the idea of the expansion of the formal and academic historical sources, which can be achieved both by oral testimonies and the internet. [Thompson Paul, The Voice of The Past, Oral History, (3d ed.) Oxford (Oxford University Press) 2000]. In particular, this phenomenon of Greek websites dedicated to popular fiction is a depictive paradigm of Segre Noiret’s term “Digital History 2.0” [Noiret Serge, “Digital History 2.0”, Clavert, Frédéric & Noiret, Serge (dir./eds.): L'histoire contemporaine à l'ère numérique - Contemporary History in the Digital Age, Bruxelles, Bern, Berlin, Frankfurt am Main, New York, Oxford (Peter Lang) 2013, 155-190.]
A sociological view on popular culture studies, which suggest that via the circle of production, distribution and consumption of popular literature, we can perceive the ideology and mentality of a historical era [Eco Umberto, The Superman of The Masses (Greek translation by Kallifatidi, Efi), Athens (Gnosi) 1988 (first Italian edition, 1976)] and finally approach the certain “structure of feeling”, which Raymond Williams quotes as “this felt sense of the quality of life at a particular place and time” [Williams Raymond, The Long Revolution, Cardigan (Parthian) 2013 (first edition, 1961)].

In his “analysis of culture”, Raymond Williams connects the “structure of feeling” with the popular culture: “Now, the fascinating thing about the structure of feeling as described is that it is presented in almost all the novels we now read as literature, as well as in the now disregarded popular fiction” [Williams Raymond (2013), The Long Revolution, Cardigan: Parthian (first published in 1961)]. Furthermore, “structure of feeling” is more obvious and vivid in the experience and mentality of the readership of popular fiction. In the memories and narratives of the readers, we can approach the experiential experience of a bygone era in the most possible direct way.
Therefore, by combining the interest which not only the study of popular culture, but also oral history show on the mentality and the ideology of ordinary people, we present and discuss the results of eight free-form interviews with old readers of popular magazines for children and teenagers of the 50s and the 60s in Greece.

In this study, I investigate the personality and the actions of the fictitious characters in Greek popular novels that are inspired by the Greek War of Independence (1821- 1832) and were written during the period 1830- 1900, in order to draw conclusions about the ideologies and mentalities of the same period.
